Quiet on the French Front”: the First World War Centenary in France and the Challenges of Republican Consensus
Comillas Journal of International Relations | nº 02 | 086-099 [2015] [ISSN 2386-5776] 86 DOI: cir.i02.y2015.007 “All QuieT ON THE FRENCH Front”: THE FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY IN FRANCE AND THE CHALLENGES OF REPUBLICAN CONSENSUS «Sin novedad en el frente»: el centenario de la Primera Guerra Mundial en Francia y los desafíos al Consenso Republicano Karine Varley University of Strathclyde Autores School of Humanities & Social Sciences E-mail: [email protected] The 2014 centenary commemorations of the First World War in France were described by many commentators as being marked by a level of consensus that stood in marked contrast Resumen with the broader political environment and the divisive memories of the Second World War. Yet despite shared desires to honour the poilu as a symbol of the sacrifices of all French soldiers, this article argues that the appearance of consensus masks deeper tensions between memories of the First World War and the ideas and values underpinning the French Republic. During the war and the period thereafter, myths of the nation in arms served to legitimise the mobilisation and immense sacrifices of the French people. The wars of the French Revolution had establis- hed the notion of the responsibility of the French people to defend their country, creating a close connection between military service, citizenship and membership of the nation. However, these ideas were challenged by memories of the mutinies of 1917 and of the punishment of those who had disobeyed orders. Having long been excluded from official commemorations, in 2014 the French government sought to rehabilitate the memory of the soldiers shot as an exam- ple for committing acts of disobedience, espionage and criminal offences. -

French Government 2012
Your Guide to the FRENCH GOVERNMENT June 2012 France, a founding member of the European Union, has a population of 65 million (including overseas territories) and is the fifth largest economy in the world.* In spring 2012, a few months before the highly anticipated American presidential elections and with the eurozone experiencing a major crisis, France held its presidential and legislative elections. Elected in May 2012, President François Hollande is the first Socialist French president to be elected since François Mitterrand, who left office in 1995. Hollande’s election represents a major shift in France’s leadership, as the Socialist Party and the French left have swept into power across the executive and legislative branches in a series of historic electoral victories. * Based on Gross Domestic Product (current prices) data in the International Monetary Fund World Economic Outlook, April 2012. A Study of the Europeanisation of Party Organisation in the British
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Royal Holloway Research Online Don’t mention Europe: a study of the Europeanisation of party organisation in the British Labour Party, the French Socialist Party and the German Social Democratic Party. Isabelle Hertner Thesis submitted to the Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, for the completion of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, September 2011. 0 Declaration of Authorship I, Isabelle Hertner, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 1 Abstract This thesis examines how the British Labour Party, the French Socialist Party (PS) and the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) have ‘Europeanised’ their organisations in three different arenas: (1) in the electorate and party system; (2) in central government and parliament; and (3) in their internal procedures and activities. ‘Europeanisation’ is defined as ‘a shorthand term for a complex process whereby national actors (in this case, parties) adapt to, and also seek to shape, the trajectory of European integration in general, and EU policies and processes in particular’ (Bomberg: 2002, 32). The underlying argument is that social democratic parties have to respond to challenges created by the European Single Market, which demands the reduction of state subsidies, and by the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), which sets limits to public spending. Social democratic parties are expected to react to these challenges by Europeanising their organisations. -

TNI’s Trade & Investment project plays a critical role in challenging the European Union’s ‘free’ trade and investment policies. Together with partner organisations and networks in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as Europe, TNI provides analysis, supports the development of campaigns and the strengthening of networks, and puts forward alternatives to corporate-driven EU trade and investment policies. www.tni.org SOMO – The Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) is an independent, non-profit research and network organisation working on social, ecological and economic issues related to sustainable development. Since 1973, the organisation investigates multinational corporations and the consequences of their activities for people and the environment around the world. SOMO supports social organisations by providing training, coordinating networks and generating and disseminating knowledge on multinational corporations in a context of international production, trade, financing and regulation. SOMO strives toward global economic development that is sustainable and fair and toward the elimination of the structural causes of poverty, environmental problems, exploitation and inequality. Through research targeted at achieving sustainable change and strengthening cooperation, SOMO seeks to offer social organisations worldwide, especially those in developing countries, the opportunity to promote sustainable alternatives and to provide a counterweight to unsustainable strategies and practices of multinational corporations. -
