Abteilung Geschichte Department of History When Authority Transcends Frontiers: Imdadullah Makki (d. 1899) and the North Indian Ulama Dr. Moin Nizami Hassanal Bolkiah Fellow Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Abstract: Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (1233-1317/1817-1899) was a prominent shaikh of the Chishti- Sabri order in British India. Born and brought up in the qasbahs (townships) of northern India, he migrated permanently to the Hijaz following the Uprising of 1857. The rest of his life was spent in Mecca, from where he continued to guide his dispersed murid (disciple) community. Living at a time when religious scholars were trying to re-assert the meaningfulness of their socio-religious world under colonial rule, Imdadullah appears to have made a prominent contribution. He was remarkably successful in establishing his authority within his immediate community of South Asian Muslim scholars and Sufi masters. Although not a qualified ‘alim (religious scholar), and despite his long absence from the subcontinent, he exerted a lasting influence on the north Indian ‘ulama and Sufi scholars. His numerous letters (written from Mecca), his malfuzat (Sufi discourses) and other writings show his constant involvement over questions about internal reform. This paper seeks to explain how Imdadullah continued to exercise his religious authority from a distance, what his presence in Mecca meant for his Indian disciples, and how his legacy came to be contested by both the Deobandi and the Bareilwy schools of thought. th Tuesday, 14 November 2017, 18:00 c.t. Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness.

Hadhrat Maulana Hakim Muhammad Akhtar Saheb explains that a person that is not punctual with his Zikrullah starves his soul. On the contrary a person that is punctual with his Zikr and does it according to the manner prescribed by the Sheikh, will reach his destination very quickly. Hadhrat Maulana had delivered a lecture during the month of Ramadaan over a period of three days explaining the importance of Zikrullah in detail, the correct method of making Zikr so that the Zikr is effective. Hadhrat Maulana had also explained the various forms of Muraqaba and the poems to be recited during Zikrullah. May Allah grant us the Taufeeq of being punctual with our Zikr and grant us the ability of making Zikr as prescribed by our Mashaaikh. Ameen! To proceed: Following the first paper in this series, in which we hoped that our respected brothers from the Tabligh – and who are described as sincere people who strive for the sake of this deen, inviting the people to the masaajid and to love of the religion, and to the virtues of noble manners – then we did not witness except abuse and foul language from many of their adherents and sympathisers, from across the globe. Many accused the one who had striven to advise them against the books of this group – books that contain the worst forms of Shirk, and innovation – of lying and fabricating against the scholars of Deobandh, whereas in reality, it is the compilers of these stories and fabrications, who themselves are the ones to blame. And this is but a sign of the blatant hizbiyyah (partisanship) that has plagued and infested the Muslim Ummah, ever since the likes of Jamaa’at ut-Tabligh, Ikhwaan and other groups arose to work in the field of da’wah, upon methodologies that are alien to the Prophetic methodology in calling to Allaah. Hence, in what follows, is more evidence of the corruption in the scripture of Tabligh, that is the Fadhaa’il, and it is hoped that the sincere seekers of truth, will leave this scripture and turn instead to the Book and the Sunnah, and indeed leave what is with the Tabligh of blind fanaticism and the hidden secretive call to the ways of the Baatiniyyah that one only witnesses after he has been initiated after years of displaying solid loyalty to them, by going out with them.

The Sihilah-i- Khwajgan known as the Naqshbandi Sufi Silsilah in India, originated in Transoxiana (Turkey) under the foundership of Khwajah Abu Yousuf Hamdani (d.c.e. *f14G),Khwajah B^au'd-din Naqshband (c. e. 1318) was the seventh in the Naqshbandi series. He was adopted by Khwajah Muhammad Shamsi, the fifth descendent of Hamdani. Bahau'd-din Naqshbandi died in (c.e 1389) and buried near Bukliara. His successor was Alau'd-din Attar (c.e. 1393) who was married to his daughter and though Attar was a renowned Sufi, it was Maulana Yaqub Carkhi (d. c. e. 1477) who continued the Naqshbandi lineage. It was his descendant Khwajah 'Ubaydullah Ahrar, who established Naqshbandi supremacy in Central Asia. Khwajah Nuru'd-din 'Ubaydullah Ahrar, was the forerunner of the Indian line of the Naqshbandis. Khwajah Nuru'd- din 'Ubaydullah Ahrar died in 29 Kabiul Awwal 895 A.H/ 20 Februrj, 1490 c.e. and buried in his Khanqah in Samarkand. The Khwajah had a large number of disciples of whom the prominent were 'Umar Shaykh Mirza, father of Babur and his son Khwajah Muhammad Yahya. Khwajah 'Abdul Shahid and Khwajah Kalan who migrated from central Asia to India, and Khwajah 'Abdur Rahim Jami, was also the disciple of Khwajah 'UbayduUah Ahrar.
