  • THE OLD BOYS the American Elite and the Origins of the CIA
THE OLD B OYS The American Elite and the Origins of the CIA BURTON HERSH Expanded, unexpurgated, and with an updated preface INTRODUCTION THE OLD BOYS The American Elite and the Origins of the CIA In 1961 I was a kid attempting to break into magazine free-lancing. The Bay of Pigs debacle had barely overtaken the Kennedy administration, and through a well-intentioned friend I finagled an audience with the highly regarded progressive Carey McWilliams, long since the rock and senior brain around The Nation of that era. McWilliams’s editorial office was small, I remember, with an ink-blotched, chipped-up desk that looked as if it had been dragged into an alley behind some principal’s office somewhere and rescued by liberals from the Department of Sani- tation. The plaster was grey, and crazed into cracks in a great many places, and smeared with a formless crescent behind where McWilliams tilted back his creaky oak chair and impatiently rubbed his scalp against the wall while hashing up story ideas. Amidst all this atmosphere, McWilliams came right to the point. What with the end of the Eisenhower administration and the Cuban misadventure, the CIA was accessible for the first time. The moment was ripe to dig out a full-length exposé of the Agency, until recently seemingly untouchable. The Allen Dulles era was mani- festly at an end. How about starting in for the magazine with that assignment? There could be no guarantee, but the magazine would probably pay expenses up to thirty dollars. At that time of my life I had no experience of any kind with investigative jour- nalism, a single friend with a couch in the entire D.C.

Transforming the Interagency System for Complex Operations Case Studies in National Security Transformation Number 6 Bernard Carreau March 2007 Sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Forces Transformation and Resources Prepared by the Center for Technology and National Security Policy The views expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not reflect the official policy or position of the National Defense University, the Department of Defense or the U.S. Government. All information and sources for this paper were drawn from unclassified materials. Mr. Carreau is a senior research fellow at the Center for Technology and National Security Policy at the National Defense University. Prior to that, he was an advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Washington and Baghdad on trade and investment matters and private sector development. Mr. Carreau is a former deputy assistant secretary of Commerce, where he had many years of experience in international trade negotiations, trade law and regulation, and business development and advocacy. He has a masters degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies ii Introduction The Department of Defense has had to transform itself to meet the new challenges of the global war on terror. For the first phase of transformation, the military has made considerable progress in augmenting its war-fighting acumen with new technologies, hardware acquisition, precision weaponry, and force capabilities. In this “long war,” involving more irregular, asymmetric operations, transformation also requires renewed focus on interagency and international partners to build a full-spectrum civil-military capability for stability operations and other complex contingencies.

  • Shakespeare on Film and Television in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress
SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date.

Biography of Richard Milhous Nixon Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum Childhood Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913, on the lemon ranch of his parents, Francis Anthony Nixon (1878–1956) and Hannah Milhous Nixon (1885–1967), in a house his father built in Yorba Linda, California. Richard was the second of five brothers: Harold (1909–1933), Donald (1914–1987), Arthur (1918–1925), and Edward (1930–). His early life was marked by financial hardship and by the deaths of his brothers Harold and Arthur. In 1922, after the failure of the Nixons’ ranch (today the site of the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum), the family moved to be nearer Hannah’s relatives in Whittier, California. There, Frank Nixon opened a combination grocery store and gas station, in which the entire Nixon family worked in order to make ends meet. Student, Attorney, and Sailor Nixon enrolled at nearby Whittier College in September 1930. He was an active student there, pursuing his interests in student government, drama, and football while living at home and helping to run the family’s store. Nixon won a scholarship to attend Duke University’s law school in May 1934, where he was president of the Student Bar Association and a member of the law review. He graduated in June 1937. Nixon returned to Whittier and joined the law firm Wingert and Bewley. On January 16, 1938, he met Thelma Catherine Ryan, a schoolteacher universally known as “Pat,” at a rehearsal for a community play in which they were both acting. Smitten, Nixon pursued Ryan, and they were married on June 21, 1940, in the Presidential Suite of the Mission Inn in Riverside, California, and honeymooned in Mexico.
