Positing Jewish emancipation as a trans-historical and cultural process, my study traces the poetic journey of a particular set of Orientalist tropes from 19th century ghetto stories to contemporary writings and film at the turn of the millennium to address a twofold question: what could this problematic method of representation accomplish for Germany’s Jewish minority in the past, and how do we understand its re-appropriation by Germany’s “new Jewry” today. -

Schiller's Egmont and the Beginnings of Weimar Classicism*
Steffan Davies Schiller’s Egmont and the Beginnings of Weimar Classicism* This essay examines Schiller’s stage version of Goethe’s Egmont, which was performed in Weimar in April 1796 and which Schiller described as “gewissermaasen Göthens und mein gemeinschaftliches Werk”. Beginning with his review of Egmont in 1788 the essay demonstrates some of the principles on which Schiller amended the text, and then shows that these match changes in Goethe’s own writing by the mid-1790s. On this basis it evalu- ates the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller, and other biographical texts, to reconsider the view that Goethe’s misgivings about the adaptation marked a low-point in their relationship. It argues that Schiller’s work on Egmont instead deserves to be seen as a constructive experience in the development of the Weimar alliance. I. Schiller had spent three weeks in Weimar watching performances by Iffland and his visiting theatre company when he wrote a letter to Körner on 10 April 1796. His aim: to persuade Körner to join him for Iffland’s last performance, Goethe’s Egmont, which he had adapted for the stage. He sounds happy with his stay and with his work, describing the new Egmont as “gewissermaasen Göthens und mein gemeinschaftliches Werk” (NA 28. 210–211). Goethe, Schiller and Iffland – surely Körner would not want to miss experiencing such a combination of talents.1 * Schiller’s texts are quoted from Schillers Werke. Nationalausgabe. WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Illustrating Classical French Fairy Tales*
MEDIEVALISM AND MAGIC: ILLUSTRATING CLASSICAL FRENCH FAIRY TALES* Daphne M. Hoogenboezem ‘Once upon a time’: the emblematic opening phrase immediately places fairy tales in a distant but indefinite past. Judging from numer- ous modern illustrated editions for children, however, fairy tales seem to be set against a medieval background. Motifs that are associated with fairy tale books as well as medieval times include Gothic cas- tles with drawbridges, jousting knights and princesses locked up in towers. The setting seems relevant for some well-known tales, which, according to Jan Ziolkowski’s recent study, go back to the medieval period.1 Romantic authors in particular reevaluated popular culture and the Middle Ages. This would explain the medieval setting used in many nineteenth-century tales, including several tales from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales, 1812–1815). The connection between the classical French tales and the medieval is conveyed not only in the text, but also in the illustrations of Romantic artists like Gustave Doré and George Cruik- shank, who managed to impress the medievalist fairy tale setting firmly on our minds through their monumental fairy tale editions packed with crenellated towers and arched windows. However, these nineteenth-century illustrators did not start the medi- evalist fairy tale imagery, and their chiefly medieval visual interpreta- tion corresponds only partly to the text of the French tales, in which a historical setting is described that is far more ambiguous. Like many fairy tale authors of his day, Charles Perrault gave his fairy tales a medi - eval touch by referring to old towers, tournaments and knights. -

Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ. -

Raúl TORRES MARTÍNEZ Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Este pequeño ensayo pretende revisar la vieja teoría del agón literario entre Heinrich von Kleist y Johann Wolfgang Goethe, aportando algo novedoso desde el punto de vista de la Grecística, y tomando, a modo de ilustración, elementos de la tragedia Pentesilea del escritor prusiano. La Antigüedad, la androginia y el agón mismo son puntos de partida desde los que podemos sacar provecho al aproximarnos al llamado Goethezeit. This little essay aims at elaborating on the old theory of the literary agon between the german poets Heinrich von Kleist and Johann. Wolfgang Goethe. It provides some Greek elements until almost unnoticed to modern scholars, taking, as a sort of example, the tragedy Penthesilea of the prusian author. Greek antiquity, an- drogyny and the agon itself, are points of view from wich we may win new perspectives in approaching the so-called Goethezeit. The Introduction is intended to give such historical, biographi- cal and critical material as will prepare the student for the most profitable and appreciative reading of the play. It has been said that Kleist is one of those poets whose work cannot be fully under- stood without a knowledge of their lives. But this is perhaps less true of "Die Hermannsschlacht" than of some of Kleist' s other works. For an intelligent understanding of this drama an intimate knowledge of the condition of Germany in the early part of the Nineteenth Century is even more essential than a knowledge of the poet's life. The Notes contain such suggestions regarding classical, geo- graphical, and vague allusions as are deemed necessary or advisable for understanding this great historical drama. -

Document Type: Critical essay Full Text: COPYRIGHT 2006 Gale, COPYRIGHT 2007 Gale, Cengage Learning [(essay date 1988) In the following essay, Tatar examines the textual history of the Bluebeard folktale in Nursery and Household Tales, contrasting narrative elements of "Mary's Child" and "Fowler's Fowl."] Fairy-tale beauties may all be very much alike, but there are two quite different types of beasts in the Grimms' Nursery and Household Tales. First, there are the animal-grooms who make life unpleasant for many a female protagonist: these are the frogs, bears, hedgehogs, and other creatures that press themselves on attractive young girls. But these beasts invariably turn out to be handsome young princes in disguise and generally prove to be perfect gentlemen. The real fairy-tale beasts, even if they are beasts in only the figurative rather than the literal sense of the term, turn out to be murderers masquerading as civilized men: Bluebeard, the Robber Bridegroom (in the tale of that title), and the wizard in "Fowler's Fowl" ("Fitchers Vogel") are the most prominent examples in the Nursery and Household Tales. Bluebeard, the most infamous of this entire lot of beasts, entered the pages of the Grimms' collection, but only in its first edition. For the second, revised edition of 1819, the Grimms eliminated the tale, evidently because it was too close in both substance and verbal realization to its French source. -
