Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Pleistocene reefs of the Egyptian Red Sea: environmental change and community persistence Lorraine R. Casazza School of Science and Engineering, Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco ABSTRACT The fossil record of Red Sea fringing reefs provides an opportunity to study the history of coral-reef survival and recovery in the context of extreme environmental change. The Middle Pleistocene, the Late Pleistocene, and modern reefs represent three periods of reef growth separated by glacial low stands during which conditions became difficult for symbiotic reef fauna. Coral diversity and paleoenvironments of eight Middle and Late Pleistocene fossil terraces are described and characterized here. Pleistocene reef zones closely resemble reef zones of the modern Red Sea. All but one species identified from Middle and Late Pleistocene outcrops are also found on modern Red Sea reefs despite the possible extinction of most coral over two-thirds of the Red Sea basin during glacial low stands. Refugia in the Gulf of Aqaba and southern Red Sea may have allowed for the persistence of coral communities across glaciation events. Stability of coral communities across these extreme climate events indicates that even small populations of survivors can repopulate large areas given appropriate water conditions and time. Aram Somalia's Judeao-Christian Heritage 3 SOMALIA'S JUDEAO-CHRISTIAN HERITAGE: A PRELIMINARY SURVEY Ben I. Aram* INTRODUCTION The history of Christianity in Somalia is considered to be very brief and as such receives only cursory mention in many of the books surveying this subject for Africa. Furthermore, the story is often assumed to have begun just over a century ago, with the advent of modem Western mission activity. However, evidence from three directions sheds light on the pre Islamic Judeao-Christian influence: written records, archaeological data and vestiges of Judeao-Christian symbolism still extant within both traditional 1 Somali culture and closely related ethnic groups • Together such data indicates that both Judaism and Christianity preceded Islam to the lowland Horn of Africa In the introduction to his article on Nubian Christianity, Bowers (1985:3-4) bemoans the frequently held misconception that Christianity only came recently to Africa, exported from the West. He notes that this mistake is even made by some Christian scholars. He concludes: "The subtle impact of such an assumption within African Christianity must not be underestimated. Indeed it is vital to African Christian self-understanding to recognize that the Christian presence in Africa is almost as old as Christianity itself, that Christianity has been an integral feature of the continent's life for nearly two thousand years." *Ben I. Aram is the author's pen name. The author has been in ministry among Somalis since 1982, in somalia itself, and in Kenya and Ethiopia. 1 These are part of both the Lowland and Highland Eastern Cushitic language clusters such as Oromo, Afar, Hadiya, Sidamo, Kambata, Konso and Rendille. -

Djibouti Location Geography Climate
Djibouti Location This republic is located in the Northeastern part of Africa. It is located at the Bab el Mandeb Strait and links the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The country is named after a city called Dijbouti which was a city located at an important trade route connecting the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and Africa with the Middle East. It can also be said that this country is located just north of the Horn of Africa.This Djibout also shares a border with Somalia and Eritrea. Geography The country has an area of about 23,200 sq. km. The distance between the country’s northern most and southern most part is 190 kms. The western most and eastern most parts are separated by 225 kms. Ethiopia borders the country to the north, west, and south, and Somalia borders the southeastern part of the country. The Gulf of Aden lies on the eastern side and the Gulf of Tadjoura extends 100 kms from the eastern part of the coast. The highest point in the country is the Moussa Ali with an elevation of 2,063 meters above sea level. The western part of the country is desert lowland with several salt lakes. Lake Abbe is the largest of the lakes which lies on the Ethiopian border. Lake Asal is the deepest lake in the country and is 153 meters deep. Climate It is hot and dry throughout the year. The summer is hotter and drier because of the desert inland winds blowing across the country. The daily temperature in winder is approximately 23-29 degrees Celsius and during summer it is 106 degree Fahrenheit. -

We test this assumption in marine fishes with a phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis of the intra-specific mass scaling of reproductive-energy output. We show that larger mothers reproduce disproportionately more than smaller mothers, not only via fecundity, but also total reproductive-energy. -
