Biographical/Historical Note

In 1969 the Rutgers Homophile League, the first openly homosexual organization in New Jersey and the second on a college campus nationwide, was founded by student Lionel Cuffie. Over time, the group evolved into the Student Alliance at Rutgers University. In 2012, there were at least ten LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) student groups at Rutgers.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is comprised of file drawers of scholarly articles, many specifically targeted for social workers working with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) youth. The collection also contains subject files relating to various LGBT issues, with clippings, pamphlets/publications, reports, book catalog cards, and pins. There are also binders of materials on topics such as LGBT psychology, hate crimes, LGBT studies/biographies, LGBT people in the military/politics, and educating LGBT youth. There are files on various LGBT organizations and services local, national, and international. These materials include clippings, pamphlets, and newsletters. There are also a small number of photographs of LGBT literature displays created by the group and a VHS tape of the film "Serving in Silence."

Processing Information Note Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of a pilot project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
