In peach orchards, birds severely damage fowers during blossom season, decreasing the fruit yield potential. However, the wild peach species Prunus mira shows intraspecifc variations of bird damage, indicating that some of the wild trees have developed strategies to avert bird foraging. Motivated by this observation, we formulated the present study to identify the potential fower metabolites mediating the bird’s selective feeding behavior in P. mira fowers. Te birds’ preferred (FG) and avoided (BFT) fowers were collected from wild P. mira trees at three diferent locations, and their metabolite contents were detected, quantifed, and compared.

  • The Complete Chloroplast Genome Sequence of Morus Cathayana and Morus Multicaulis, and Comparative Analysis Within Genus Morus L
The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Morus cathayana and Morus multicaulis, and comparative analysis within genus Morus L Wei Qing Kong and Jin Hong Yang Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Sericulture, Ankang University, Ankang, Shaanxi, China ABSTRACT Trees in the Morus genera belong to the Moraceae family. To better understand the species status of genus Morus and to provide information for studies on evolutionary biology within the genus, the complete chloroplast (cp) genomes of M. cathayana and M. multicaulis were sequenced. The plastomes of the two species are 159,265 bp and 159,103 bp, respectively, with corresponding 83 and 82 simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Similar to the SSRs of M. mongolica and M. indica cp genomes, more than 70% are mononucleotides, ten are in coding regions, and one exhibits nucleotide content polymorphism. Results for codon usage and relative synonymous codon usage show a strong bias towards NNA and NNT codons in the two cp genomes. Analysis of a plot of the effective number of codons (ENc) for five Morus spp. cp genomes showed that most genes follow the standard curve, but several genes have ENc values below the expected curve. The results indicate that both natural selection and mutational bias have contributed to the codon bias. Ten highly variable regions were identified among the five Morus spp. cp genomes, and 154 single-nucleotide polymorphism mutation events were accurately located in the gene coding region. • The Framework Species Approach to Forest Restoration: Using Functional Traits As Predictors of Species Performance
    - 1 - The Framework Species Approach to forest restoration: using functional traits as predictors of species performance. Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Hannah Betts July 2013 - 2 - - 3 - Abstract Due to forest degradation and loss, the use of ecological restoration techniques has become of particular interest in recent years. One such method is the Framework Species Approach (FSA), which was developed in Queensland, Australia. The Framework Species Approach involves a single planting (approximately 30 species) of both early and late successional species. Species planted must survive in the harsh conditions of an open site as well as fulfilling the functions of; (a) fast growth of a broad dense canopy to shade out weeds and reduce the chance of forest fire, (b) early production of flowers or fleshy fruits to attract seed dispersers and kick start animal-mediated seed distribution to the degraded site. The Framework Species Approach has recently been used as part of a restoration project in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in northern Thailand by the Forest Restoration Research Unit (FORRU) of Chiang Mai University. FORRU have undertaken a number of trials on species performance in the nursery and the field to select appropriate species. However, this has been time-consuming and labour- intensive. It has been suggested that the need for such trials may be reduced by the pre-selection of species using their functional traits as predictors of future performance. Here, seed, leaf and wood functional traits were analysed against predictions from ecological models such as the CSR Triangle and the pioneer concept to assess the extent to which such models described the ecological strategies exhibited by woody species in the seasonally-dry tropical forests of northern Thailand.

Genetic diversity of 38 almond local genotypes was investigated using RADP and ISSR markers with the analysis of nut morphology. Samples were taken from five locations for this study, including Sharbazher, Mergapan, Qaradakh, Barznja, and Hawraman. Almond nuts width, length and thickness were studied and their mean values were observed to range between 16.18-27.21 mm, 24.18-41.07 mm and 11.49-16.81 mm, respectively. Polymorphic bands of mean values were 9.5 for random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and 8 for inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR). The PIC values were recorded for RAPD primes to range between 0.77 to 0.97 and those for ISSR primers were also verified between 0.36 to 0.97. Based on Jaccard similarity coefficients, the genetic distances were recorded between 0.32 (B-G3 vs. B-G4) (M-G2 vs. M-G1) to 0.75 (H-G5 vs. Q-G1) and all genotypes were grouped into 3 major clusters (A, B and C) with a mean dissimilarity 0.535 for 20 RADP markers.

  • Molecular Phylogeny of Mulberries Reconstructed from ITS and Two Cpdna Sequences
Molecular phylogeny of mulberries reconstructed from ITS and two cpDNA sequences Yahui Xuan, Yue Wu, Peng Li, Ruiling Liu, Yiwei Luo, Jianglian Yuan, Zhonghuai Xiang and Ningjia He State Key Laboratory of Silkworm Genome Biology, Southwest University, Chongqing, China ABSTRACT Background: Species in the genus Morus (Moraceae) are deciduous woody plants of great economic importance. The classification and phylogenetic relationships of Morus, especially the abundant mulberry resources in China, is still undetermined. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions are among the most widely used molecular markers in phylogenetic analyses of angiosperms. However, according to the previous phylogenetic analyses of ITS sequences, most of the mulberry accessions collected in China were grouped into the largest clade lacking for phylogenetic resolution. Compared with functional ITS sequences, ITS pseudogenes show higher sequence diversity, so they can provide useful phylogenetic information. Methods: We sequenced the ITS regions and the chloroplast DNA regions TrnL-TrnF and TrnT-TrnL from 33 mulberry accessions, and performed phylogenetic analyses to explore the evolution of mulberry. Results: We found ITS pseudogenes in 11 mulberry accessions. In the phylogenetic tree constructed from ITS sequences, clade B was separated into short-type sequence clades (clades 1 and 2), and a long-type sequence clade (clade 3). Pseudogene sequences were separately clustered into two pseudogroups, designated as pseudogroup 1 and pseudogroup 2. The phylogenetic tree generated from cpDNA sequences also separated clade B into two clades. Submitted 7 June 2019 Conclusions: Two species were separated in clade B. The existence of three Accepted 4 November 2019 connection patterns and incongruent distribution patterns between the phylogenetic Published 12 December 2019 trees generated from cpDNA and ITS sequences suggested that the ITS pseudogene Corresponding author sequences connect with genetic information from the female progenitor.
