U životu i u umjetnosti uvijek prisutna, neophodna. FESTIVAL OF INTERNATIONAL ALTERNATIVE THEATRE Selector: Ana Vujošević This year’s 33rd edition of FIAT is based on different artistic expressions which will by all means motivate audience to adapt and seek, comprehend and experience together with the artists. The goal of alternative theatre is a different, experimental and authentic expression, one that differs from the usual, thus this year’s FIAT is going back to its purpose. An open call, a practise that would continue in the future, resulted in 67 projects from all over the world submitted to the Council. After considering all presented materials, the selection of aspiring and expressive performances from Spain, Hungary, Montenegro, France, Croatia, Serbia, Israel, Macedonia and Albania had been made. Each of these performances is an intimate journey we indulge in. The collective motif is fight. Ever present and necessary in both life and art. The fight with one self (spirit, mind and body), with fear, loneliness, craze, a fight against the society, the old and the new, the success and failure, music, words, prejudice and hypocrisy, fight with pain, crime, silence, with love and truth, with………….. We ask ourself… What our tortured being can and cannot? Could we prepare ourselves for everything life imposes on us? The fight doesn’t end! FIAT doesn’t give up! What happens when we react against the established norm? Have you ever accompanied someone on a voyage of initiation…? La Caputxeta Galàctica is a multimedia stage show based on the well-known tale of Little Red Riding Hood, offering a unique view of the popular story. This multidisciplinary piece explores various modes of artistic expression, the combination of which results in a new and original expressive form which immerses the audience. The show brings together three video artists, two painters, a musician and an actress, who together create a film ‘live’ in such a way that the audience can enjoy both the finished work – projected on a large screen – and simultaneously see its ‘making of’. • For the Homeland: Transnational Diasporic Nationalism and the Eurovision Song Contest
FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. Key words: diaspora, former Yugoslavia, Eurovision Song Contest, music, nationalism, Sweden, transnationalism ii Acknowledgements Any project is fundamentally a piece of team work and my project has been no different. I would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their faith in me and the support they have given me: William Jenkins, my supervisor. For his guidance and support over the past two years, and pushing me to follow my desired research and never settling for less.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

BELGIUM Artists: Copycat Song: Copycat Reviewed by Aaron Harmer Elvis isn’t dead, he’s just been taking it easy in Belgium. Who could blame him, waffles and Jean-Claude van Damme, Belgium has it all. But on a serious note, as an ardent Elvis fan I find this song offensive. ‘Copycat’ goes as far as to claim Elvis was too fat to rock’n’roll. Outrageous! Some of the greatest rockers of all time have been horizontally challenged — Meatloaf, Fats Domino, Chubby Ckecker to name a few. He then goes on to claim Elvis is too dead to rock’n’roll. We all know Elvis has sold more albums posthumously than when he was alive. In a year with more than half the entries sung in English, Belgium would have been better off with a haunting Flemish vocalist or a soothing saxophonist (the sax was invented by a Belgian in 1846). SERBIA Artists: Marko Kon & Milaan Song: Cipela Reviewed by Aaron Harmer There’s an old saying that “a gentleman is a man who knows how to play the piano accordion, but chooses not to”. This year Serbia assaults the Eurovision stage with ‘Cipela’, a heady combination of nearly sub-sonic bass and twangy piano accordion stylings. But in all honesty this song is actually pretty good, and the effect is only enhanced as Marko Kon’s swivelling hips exert their control over the tides of northern Europe. It’s a little known fact that Marko Kon is actually the love child of Barry White and Guy Sebastian, and sings so low he can actually be measured on the Richter Scale.
