THE growing power of the infant Gnosticism acting with inspiration upon the quick warm nature of the Jordan N azarenes laid the seed which, nourished by the accumulated Wisdom of the illustrious teachers of the Pharisees, ultimately ripened into the New Testament—the priceless pearl of the Jewish concep tion. The earliest Gnosticism in Irenzeus extends a hand to the Gnosticism of the Kabbala. Irenwus’s Gnostica, the Codex Nasaraeus, the oldest parts of Kabbala, the first three chapters of Genesis, the New Testament theology, Hippolytus, and some extracts from the Rabbins, all are brought together. Although the Codex Nazaraeus is dated the year 1042 some of its material is much earlier}; thus some of it is found in Irenmus (in the second cen tury), some in the Kabbala, and some seems to belong to traditions or myths connected with the patriarchal names in Genesis. The basis of the material common to Irenaeus and the Codex N asar aeus must be at least as early as the first century; ' Ill iv . PREFACE. for time was needed to produce so many different doctrinal systems: and if they were collected in the second century some of them must have been formed previously. The early rabbinical period seems to have mostly passed out of record ; excepting the Old Testament and some other works; its books are destroyed, its systems and philosophical dogmas forgotten. It is the same with Babylonian treatises and systems. They have perished. But because they are not all within reach it will not do to reason as if they never had existed! There is a point on the map from which procedes the religious history of the last eighteen hundred years. It is the mountain region which belongs to Phoenicia and Israel, Lebanon and the land of Gali lee! From these mountains the rain of Adonis de scended in Jordan’s stream, the autumnal and vernal rain.l Flowing south among “ John’s Disciples ” and ' Eden or Adan, a town of Mount Libanus, not far from the River Adonis, is named from the God Adan, Aden. The Jordan issues from the Lebanon. It is formed by the confluence of three little rivers, one of which is named the Dan (from Adan, Adonis).—Munk, p. 8. Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. You can choose between what makes life beautiful and what makes life ugly; you can choose whether to paint yourself in a certain manner or whether to wear something made of iron — or, as was the case with the famous Cheyenne warrior Roman Nose — you could choose to never so much as touch iron. In battle you choose whether you should charge the enemy first, join the main thrust of attack, or take off on your own and try to steal his horses.

Unlike followers of religions such as Christianity, Judaism, & Islam, the Greeks did not have a single sacred text, such as the Bible or Koran from which their beliefs and religious practices derived. Instead, they generally used oral traditions, passed on by word of mouth, to relate sacred stories. Priest and priestesses to various gods would also guide people in worship in various temples across Greece. We know something about these beliefs because Greek poets such as Homer, Hesiod and Pindar, and Greek dramatists such as Euripides, Aristophanes & Sophocles mention the myths in their various works. Greek mythology, however, was not static- it was constantly changing and evolving. Thus, there are often many different versions (and some that are contradictory toward one another) of the various Greek myths. Thus, some of the example myths you read in here may differ from ones you have previously heard. It does not necessarily make either version “wrong”- simply different. - The Greeks had many Gods & Goddesses- over three thousand if one were to count the many minor gods and goddesses. These deities made up the Greek pantheon, a word used to mean all the gods and goddesses (from the Greek word “pan” meaning all, and “theos” meaning gods).     GRECO -ROMAN GODS AND GODDESSES THE OLYMPIANS : THE “T WELVE ” Of the many major and minor gods in the Olympian dynasty the most important are the Twelve, a group chosen by the Greeks themselves as the key figures in the Olympian group and the basis for most of their religious observances. Greek law is also to some extent derived from the concept of the Twelve, and Greeks in both court proceedings and in ordinary conversation took their oath “by the Twelve.” The divinities constituting this group were: Zeus (Jupiter, Jove) Leader of the Olympians, god of lightening, and representative of the power principle. Her birth was remarkable, since she sprang fully-armed from the forehead of Zeus. She was the patron goddess of Athens and to the Athenians represented the art of civilized living. To gain favorable wind for the Greek sailing fleet to Troy, he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to the goddess Artemis, and so came under a curse. After he returned home victorious, he was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. • Ajax –a Greek warrior in the Trojan War who is described as being of colossal stature, second only to Achilles in courage and strength. He was however slow witted and excessively proud. • Amazons –a nation of warrior women. The Amazons burned off their right breasts so that they could use a bow and arrow more efficiently in war.

    Cosmophobia: Urania’s Lament and Lessons Learned by Kristine Larsen INTRODUCTION It will come as no surprise that the world did not end on December 21, 2012. No rogue asteroid slammed into our planet, no humongous solar flare evaporated our atmosphere, and the planet did not catastrophically flip over on its axes. The next day holiday shopping still needed to be completed, bills demanded to be paid, and deadlines still loomed. Tourists began leaving Mexican and Central American archaeological sites, their wallets lightened and perhaps their spirits lifted (Sood 2012). In China, a carpenter who had spent his entire family savings on fine food and wine in the days prior to the 21st was probably trying to apologize to his now-estranged pregnant wife, and two cousins who had gone on a pre-apocalypse crime spree were probably rethinking the wisdom of their recent life choices (Zhong 2012). In the wake of the non-end of the world, the only casualties seem to have been some gullible persons’ bank accounts, and the UNESCO World Heritage site Temple II in the Mayan metropolitan center of Tikal, which suffered unspecified damage when tourists illegally climbed its ancient steps (AFP 2012). The sunrise on December 22, 2012 especially came as no surprise to scientists, some of whom had been debunking these illogical claims for the previous few years, in what was probably the largest anti-pseudoscience public education campaign by the scientific community in modern history.
