This new title will also be used for the quarterly newsletter to identify ourselves more clearly. This Cross is not the monopoly of Christians because it also symbolizes the Holy City for our Jewish brothers: the main cross indicates the spiritual center of the world and the other four smaller crosses the cardinal points. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to express my gratitude to Professor Agostino Borromeo, who founded this magazine twenty years ago and was Governor General over these last eight years, giving new impetus to the communication tools of the Grand Magisterium through the creation of a new website, available in five languages, that will complement our print publications. Together with the Communication’s Office of the Grand The Jerusalem Cross, the emblem of the Order of the Magisterium, he chose this new name. Holy Sepulchre, appears in Cardinal O’Brien’s coat of This development befits the sustained arms. effort to continue to raise awareness of our Order, its mission and its actions in the service of all the inhabitants of the Holy Land.     "I want to serve the Order in continuity with my predecessor" Exclusive interview with Ambassador Leonardo Visconti of Modrone, the new Governor General of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Excellency, as you settle into the role of Governor General of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, what are you innermost sentiments? I have some trepidation, being well aware that this is a very important office within the Church in the service of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Professor Agostino Borromeo has devoted his professional life to the history of the Church and has always viewed his commitment to the Order as an ecclesial mission, so he was very well suited to taking on the responsibility of the Governorship for two terms. We must pay homage to him as he leaves a healthy legacy: we have never had so many members and so many donations. My experience is very different, as I have served my country in the diplomatic service as an ambassador and this has allowed me to establish many important international relations. I trust that this will be useful to our pontifical institution which is universal in dimension. However, I still have a lot to learn from my consoeurs and my confrères, Dames and Knights all over the world, and I count on Agostino Borromeo to accompany me, especially in the first phase of my four-year term. I want to serve the Order in continuity with my predecessor. You mentioned your diplomatic experience. In what way would you see it as being valuable to exercising your new role, alongside the Grand Master, at the head of the Order? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to live the life He lived. Read along in Matthew, chapters 5 through 7, for a portrait of Christ, a portrait indeed that through grace, He would like to paint in each of us! Beginning with the Beatitudes, the DNA of the Christian life, the Sermon challenges us with teachings and standards, which only the saints would find practical, and achievable only through the daily graces of God. Investiture celebrations and regional lieutenancy gatherings have offered me reassuring evidence of our Order’s rich devotion to God and to good works on behalf of Christians in the Holy Land. Hopefully, our pace slackens a bit during these summer days, perhaps offering some moments of interior spiritual renewal. Might we add to our summer reading list a daily few minutes with the New Testament and a prayerful meditation on the Sermon on the Mount?     Pope says suffering reveals humanity can change people for the better AMMAN, Jordan – Pope Benedict XVI’s first stop in Jordan was at a church-run facility for people with disabilities, a place he said demonstrates how suffering can change people for the better. “Standing in your midst, I draw strength from God,” the pope told the clients of Amman’s Regina Pacis center, established in 2004 by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Arriving directly from the Amman airport May 8, the pope said that “in our own trials, and standing alongside others in their struggles, we glimpse the essence of our humanity; we become, as it were, more human.” “And we come to learn that, on another plane, even hearts hardened by cynicism or injustice or unwillingness to forgive are never beyond the reach of God,” because every heart “can always be opened to a new way of being, a vision of peace.” The center is operated by three Comboni Missionary Sisters and a team of teachers, therapists and volunteers to educate and care for Muslims and Christians with disabilities. With a particular mission to the poor, it provides vocational training, therapy and basic medical care free of charge. Satellite centers operate in six other Jordanian cities.
