The Assembly of Catholic Professionals was created this year, by the Archdiocese of Brisbane under the patronage of the Archbish- op. The idea of establishing the Assembly of Catholic Professionals was to create a regular opportunity for business people and pro- fessionals to gather as a community, to get to know each other in the context of our lives as Catholics, to discuss issues and trends in the life of the Church, and to get to know clergy members and leaders in the Archdiocese. The Assembly meets quarterly, over lunch. Our growing numbers and the feedback we are receiving is certainly indicating that we are onto something very positive. At each luncheon we have now come to expect an attendance of more than 100 people. We started in March, and recently celebrated our final luncheon for the year in December. At each event, there is an opportunity for networking and to hear from a guest speaker. We have been inspired and entertained by some many wonderful talents this year. In March, Geoff Rodgers, Executive Chairman of communications Awarding the cardinal insignia to our Grand Master consultancy, Rowland, spoke about his life as a Catholic, his in- volvement in the Church, the role and challenges of religion in his January 17, 2012 own family, and the influence that Catholicism has had throughout his life. I will be ever grateful for his words of support and counsel these three brief months since my appointment as Pro-Grand Master of the Order. The Cardinal frequently expressed his gratitude in being able to spend his final months in his beloved Philadelphia and among his brother priests. His love for the priesthood was extraordinary. • "I Want to Serve the Order in Continuity with My Predecessor"
"I want to serve the Order in continuity with my predecessor" Exclusive interview with Ambassador Leonardo Visconti of Modrone, the new Governor General of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Excellency, as you settle into the role of Governor General of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, what are you innermost sentiments? I have some trepidation, being well aware that this is a very important office within the Church in the service of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Professor Agostino Borromeo has devoted his professional life to the history of the Church and has always viewed his commitment to the Order as an ecclesial mission, so he was very well suited to taking on the responsibility of the Governorship for two terms. We must pay homage to him as he leaves a healthy legacy: we have never had so many members and so many donations. My experience is very different, as I have served my country in the diplomatic service as an ambassador and this has allowed me to establish many important international relations. I trust that this will be useful to our pontifical institution which is universal in dimension. However, I still have a lot to learn from my consoeurs and my confrères, Dames and Knights all over the world, and I count on Agostino Borromeo to accompany me, especially in the first phase of my four-year term. I want to serve the Order in continuity with my predecessor. You mentioned your diplomatic experience. In what way would you see it as being valuable to exercising your new role, alongside the Grand Master, at the head of the Order? Lieutenancies and Magistral Delegations that structure the life of the Order on all continents are somewhat equivalent to embassies for a government.

  • Jews on Trial: the Papal Inquisition in Modena, 1598–1638
Jews on trial artwork 8/7/11 15:07 Page 1 J ews on tr STUDIES IN EARLY MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY Jews on trial ‘A welcome addition to our knowledge ... the archival material has been handled with care and sensitivity’ The Papal Inquisition in Modena, Simon Ditchfield, University of York, UK 1598-1638 esearch on the Papal Inquisition in Italy has tended to centre on trials for ial Rheresy, witchcraft and possession of prohibited books, but little is known of the activities of the Inquisition with respect to practising Jews. This book explores the role of the Papal Inquisition in Modena, the status of Jews in the KATHERINE ARON-BELLER early modern Italian duchy and the fundamental disparity in Inquisitorial procedure regarding professing Jews. It also uses the detailed testimony to be found in trial transcripts to analyse Jewish interaction with Christian society in an early modern European community. Jews on trial concentrates on Inquisitorial activity during the period which historians have argued was the most active in the Inquisition’s history – the first forty years of the tribunal in Modena, from 1598 to 1638, the year of the Jews’ enclosure in the ghetto. This book will appeal to scholars of inquisitorial studies, social and cultural interaction in early modern Europe, Jewish Italian social history and anti-Semitism. Katherine Aron-Beller is a lecturer in Jewish History both at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Tel Aviv University. In 2006-07 she served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the George Washington University in Washington, DC AR ON-BELLER ‘The Strappada’ From Thomas Murner Die Entehrung Mariae durch die Juden, reproduced in Jahrbuch für Geschichte, Sprache und Literatur Elsass-Lothringen 21 (1905) ISBN 978-0-7190-8519-2 9 7 8 0 7 1 9 0 8 5 1 9 2 www.manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk Jews on trial Aron-Beller_01_TextAll.indd 1 18/02/2011 14:22 STUDIES IN EARLY MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY This series aims to publish challenging and innovative research in all areas of early modern continental history.

  • Peace in the Post-Reformation
PINA01 04/08/1998 10:47 AM Page i Peace in the Post-Reformation Christians are supposed to love their neighbours, including their enemies. This is never easy. When feud and honour are common realities, it is even harder than usual. This book sketches the history of peacemaking between people (not countries) as an activity of churches or of Christianity between the Reformation and the eighteenth century. The story is recounted in four countries (Italy, France, Germany and England) and in several religious settings (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Church of England and Calvinist). Each version is a variation upon a theme: what the author calls a ‘moral tradition’ which contrasts, as a continuing imperative, with the novelties of theory and practice introduced by the sixteenth-century reformers. In general the topic has much to say about the destinies of Christianity in each country, and more widely, and strikes a chord which will resonate in both the social and the religious history of the West. John Bossy is Professor of History, University of York. His many publications include The English Catholic Community, – (), Christianity in the West, – () and Giordano Bruno and the Embassy Affair () which shared the Wolfson Prize.
