    Epistolae Phalaridis (The Epistles of Phalaris), Latin translation by FRANCESCO GRIFFOLINI In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment Italy (Northern?), c. 1460-1480 iii (modern paper) + 80 + iii (modern paper) folios on parchment, eighteenth- or nineteenth-century foliation in brown ink made before any leaves were removed, 17-88, 97-104, lacking 40 leaves: quires A, B, M, O and P (collation [lacking A-B8] C-L8 [lacking M8] N8 [lacking O-P8]), alphanumerical leaf signatures, Ci, Cii...Niii, Niiii, horizontal catchwords, ruled in brown ink (justification 95 x 57 mm.), written in gray ink in a fine humanistic minuscule in a single column on 16 lines, addressees of letters in red capitals, letter numbers in red in the margins, each letter begins with a very fine 2-line initial in burnished gold on a ground painted in red and blue, highlighted with white penwork, light scribbles in black ink on ff. 40v-41, f. 1 darkened and stained, further stains and signs of use especially in the lower margins at the beginning and the end, edges darkened, but in overall good condition. In modern light brown calf binding, spine almost entirely detached, slightly scratched on the back board. Dimensions 164 x 113 mm. The Italian humanists were fascinated by this collection of fictional letters by the monstrous Sicilian tyrant, Phalaris, famous for torturing his enemies inside a bronze bull and eating human babies. In keeping with the established tradition in Ancient Greece of epistolary fiction, these letters are a literary creation by a yet unknown author, who reinvented Phalaris and explored his public and private life through the fictional letters.

    Colin McAllister Regnum Caelorum Terrestre: The Apocalyptic Vision of Lactantius May 2016 Abstract: The writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius have been extensively studied by historians, classicists, philosophers and theologians. But his unique apocalyptic eschatology expounded in book VII of the Divinae Institutiones, his largest work, has been relatively neglected. This paper will distill Lactantius’s complex narrative and summarize his sources. In particular, I investigate his chiliasm and the nature of the intermediate state, as well as his portrayal of the Antichrist. I argue that his apocalypticism is not an indiscriminate synthesis of varying sources - as it often stated - but is essentially based on the Book of Revelation and other Patristic sources. +++++ The eminent expert on all things apocalyptic, Bernard McGinn, wrote: Even the students and admirers of Lactantius have not bestowed undue praise upon him. To Rene Pichon [who wrote in 1901 what is perhaps still the seminal work on Lactantius’ thought] ‘Lactantius is mediocre in the Latin sense of the word - and also a bit in the French sense’; to Vincenzo Loi [who studied Lactantius’ use of the Bible] ‘Lactantius is neither a philosophical or theological genius nor linguistic genius.’ Despite these uneven appraisals, the writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius [c. 250-325] hold, it seems, a little something for everyone.1 Political historians study Lactantius as an important historical witness to the crucial transitional period from the Great Persecution of Diocletian to the ascension of Constantine, and for insight into the career of the philosopher Porphyry.2 Classicists and 1 All dates are anno domini unless otherwise indicated.

    Evaluate the contribution and impact of Tiberius (AD 14-37) as Princeps. The contribution and impact of the reign of Tiberius (AD 14-37) is highly controversial and abounds in inconsistency. Considering his rule marked the succession of a Principate that was created specifically for Augustus, it would prove to be a crucial time for the Empire. His frugal rule carried the Empire into a period of stable economic and military security, yet the negative repercussions of his rule were not seen until Gaius’ time. Despite an initial transition as Princeps that was based on obligation, Tiberius strove to uphold the glory of Augustus’s rule and endeavored to maintain the prosperity of the Roman Empire. Essentially, it was his inability to preserve the fragile power balance between Princeps and the Senate as well as the development of the Praetorian Guard and the Maiestas trials that proved difficult for his accession and subsequent rule. Although his diplomatic skills and military expertise were extensive, and continued to preserve the Pax Romana, his solemn and reserved figure formed a reluctance to rule that would cause great detriment to the Empire in the long run. It is evident that Tiberius’s contribution as Princeps was an effective continuation of Augustan precedent, however the impressions he sought to forge for himself were affected both by poor choices and the deceitful influences of men that ensured his dishonorable posthumous reputation. Despite Tiberius' initial reluctance to assume the power of the Princeps, he was a ruler of “considerable abilities” 1 , as he efficiently ran the Empire the discretion and skill.

    THE PRINCIPATE – LIFEBELT, OR MILLSTONE AROUND THE NECK OF THE EMPIRE? John Drinkwater* The Augustan Principate was the product of crisis – a response to the challenges that precipitated the fall of the Republic. The Principate worked because it met the political needs of its day. There is no doubt that it saved the Roman state and the Roman Empire: it was a lifebelt. But it was not perfect. In its turn it precipitated more challenges that had to be responded to – more crises – in particular that known as the ‘third century Crisis’. In the long run it was a problem as much as a solution: a millstone as much as a lifebelt. In the end, it had to go. I will brie y deal with the Principate as a problem, and then suggest a new way of discerning the strains that brought about its demise. The Principate was created by Augustus and continued by the Julio- Claudians. However, there is a case for arguing that the Principate had still to establish itself as ‘the of\ ce of emperor’ as late as the death of Nero. The continuing challenges and responses that created and developed the Principate sometimes also broke it open to show its workings, and what contemporaries made of it. Thus Plutarch reports that in A.D. 68, Galba, on his way from Spain to take up power in Rome, entertained a group of senators in southern Gaul. Though he could have used the imperial furniture and servants sent to him by the Praetorian Prefect, Nymphidius Sabinus, initially he chose not to, which was remarked upon favourably by his guests.1 Galba’s modesty is explicable in various ways but, following Wiedemann’s appreciation of Galba’s family pride, I believe that he rejected this ‘family silver’ basically because it was the silver of an alien family.2 Galba, born in 3 B.C., had lived under all the Julio-Claudian rulers.

    AUGUSTINUS HIPPONENSIS, Enarrationes in Psalmos CXX-CXXXIII In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment Northern Italy, likely Milan (Abbey of Morimondo?), c. 1150-1175 99 ff., preceded and followed by a modern parchment flyleaf, missing at least a quire at the beginning (collation: i-xii8, xiii3), written by a single scribe above the top line in a twelfth-century relatively angular minuscule in brown ink, text copied on 25 lines (justification: 115/125 x 75 mm), added explicits and chapter headings at the end of each textual division in a different rounded script (most in pale brown ink, some in pale red ink), prickings in outer margins, ruled in hard point, catchwords on ff. 32v and 40v, rubrics in bright red, liturgical lessons marked in the margins in red or brown ink roman numerals (sometimes preceded by the letter “lc” for “lectio” (e.g. f. 8), some initials and capitals stroked in red, larger painted 3-line high initials in red, one 4-line high initial in green with downward extension for a further eight lines, some with ornamental flourishing (e.g. f. 82v), some contemporary annotations and/or corrections. Bound in a modern tanned pigskin binding over wooden boards, renewed parchment pastedown and flyleaves, brass catches and clasps, fine restored condition (some leaves cropped a bit shorter, a few waterstains in bottom right corner of a number of folios, never affecting legibility). Dimensions 165 x 105 mm. Twelfth-century copy of the middle section of the important and influential exegetical treatise devoted to the Psalms, Augustine’s longest work. The codex boasts a twelfth-century ex-libris from the abbey of Morimondo, and it appears in the Morimondo Library Catalogue datable to the third quarter of the twelfth century.

In his biographical work The Lives of the Caesars, the literary artist Gaius ​ ​ Suetonius Tranquillus (c. 69-122 CE) provides a concise, informative, and illustrative depiction of the reigns of these two emperors. Suetonius’ particular literary technique and style used in the narration for both Nero and Caligula contributes to an enduring legacy of madness and depravity that has been influential in our understanding of these two rulers well into the modern age.

    What Did Diodorus Write? Friendship and Literary Criticism at the School of Gaza* Federica Ciccolella The so-called School of Gaza, which flourished between the fifth and the sixth centuries, represented the twilight of Greco-Roman culture in Palestine before the Muslim conquest of 635.1 Although Procopius of Gaza is generally considered the school’s most important representative, his work did not attract much attention until a decade ago, when scholars were suddenly reminded of his existence thanks to the fortunate discovery of an exchange of letters between Procopius and a contemporaneous rhetorician, Megethius, in a manuscript of the Marciana Library in Venice.2 This renewed interest has led to a wave of studies resulting in two critical editions of Procopius’s rhetorical works. Recent translations of these works into Italian and French will certainly spark more interest in Procopius and his works.3 Our most important source on Procopius’s life is an oration that his pupil Choricius wrote after his death, which is approximately dated 536.4 Born in Gaza between 463 and 473, Procopius received his primary education in his city and then moved to Alexandria, where he perfected rhetoric and studied philosophy probably at the school of Olympiodorus the Elder. Procopius became a sophist and a teacher of rhetoric; after teaching in Pamphylia and, perhaps, at Caesarea and in other cities, he eventually returned to Gaza, where he spent the rest of his life.
