This will help you understand what your audience is bringing to this presentation in terms of perceptions and knowledge of college. • A college is any school that a student enrolls in after receiving their high school diploma or GED that offers a certificate or degree for completing courses. • In Tennessee, there are several different kinds of colleges you can attend depending on your interests. • Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCAT): Tennessee’s provider of state-of-the-art technical training for workers to obtain the technical skills and professional training to enter the workforce. Students can earn certificates and diplomas here. Some programs are less than 1 year. • Community College: Offers associate degree and certificate programs that focus on preparing you for a certain career. • 4-year colleges and universities offer bachelor degree programs. • Public Colleges: funded by local and state governments and usually offer lower tuition rates than private colleges, especially for students who are residents of the state where a college is located. Public colleges in Tennessee include the University of Tennessee System, such as University of Tennessee- Knoxville, as well as Middle Tennessee State University and East Tennessee State University. • Private Colleges : schools that rely mainly on tuition, fees and private sources of funding. Private donations can sometimes provide generous financial aid packages for students. Fortunately for students in Tennessee, there are many options available to help reduce the cost of attending college, including: ▫ FAFSA ▫ The Tennessee Promise ▫ Scholarships and Awards

▫ This portion of the presentation is an important one because cost of college is a big concern for students and families. Consider inviting a parent of a current college student or a local alum to talk about how they addressed paying for college, or offering students and families additional meeting times with you specifically for financial aid questions. FAFSA • Free Application for Federal Student Aid • The FAFSA is an online form that uses a student and their family’s information to help calculate how much financial aid a student qualifies for ▫ Federal programs: Pell grant, subsidized student loans, work study ▫ State programs: Tennessee Promise, Hope Scholarship and more!

Most colleges also use the information on the FAFSA to calculate financial aid. 2020-21 FAFSA • Available October 1, 2019 • www.fafsa.gov (VERY IMPORTANT!) • Student AND parent will create FSA ID usernames/passwords (fsaid.ed.gov) to sign electronically • Student and parent will submit FAFSA using IRS Data Retrieval Tool to upload 2018 tax information Your FAFSA Timeline • The FAFSA will officially open for your student on October 1, 2020. • Our school will host many opportunities for you to receive help with the FAFSA, including: ▫ Date: FAFSA workshop. During this time, we will log in to the FAFSA with your FSA ID and ensure you and your student are supported in filling out the form. ▫ Optional Date: FSA ID workshop. The FSA ID is your electronic signature for the FAFSA. The student and one parent must each have an FSA ID to submit the FAFSA online. (Note- some schools choose to hose FSA ID and FAFSA workshops separately. Others complete their FSA ID at the same time they are completing the FAFSA. Do what works best for you!)
