MEET ME AT FRAM

Last summer, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks hosted over 100,000 festival goers in Druid Hill park for the annual AFRAM festival. Known for music, art, culture and history, AFRAM pays homage to Baltimore’s rich African American heritage. This August 10 through 11, we welcome you back to the park for the ultimate #AFRAMILY reunion-a term coined last year to describe the unique, family-friendly vibe. Many come to AFRAM as strangers and leave as family.

This year, we’re taking the festivities to the next level. Expect bigger and better activations, tasty local eats and a wide variety of artistic exhibits. Stay connected to aframbaltimore.com for updates, creative content and national talent announcement. That’s right, we’re bringing two national acts to Baltimore, but you have to stay tuned to find out.

bcrp.baltimorecity.gov 43 After 30 years of tireless and devoted service, JoAnn Cason, Chief of Special Populations, officially retired from Baltimore City Recreation and Parks in early 2019. During her time with BCRP, JoAnn and her team of dedicated and loyal staff have helped shape and manage both the Therapeutic Recreation and Senior Citizen Divisions. With over 40 years working with aging adults, JoAnn most enjoyed showing Baltimore’s golden-agers that fitness can be fun while convincing them shopping and line-dancing IS an aerobic activity and providing opportunities for each special population to stay active and independent.

Through her work with the Rec & Parks Senior Division, JoAnn brought quality, intergenerational programming to thousands of Baltimore youth and seniors. She fostered ways to connect youth from our recreation centers to her senior participants with dance programs and performances. Many of her programs and initiatives are hugely popular and bring in record crowds including the Senior Prom and the Pre-New Year’s Eve Gala, which has grown out of its original, recreation center space and moved into Martin’s West to accommodate the huge turnout.

Her contributions to ensure that the range of BCRP services remains fun and inclusive for all has cultivated programming aimed to guarantee that recreational opportunities are offered to individuals of all abilities. For example, participants of the therapeutic art program are able to make varied art types from paintings to sculptures, where they then present their work during an art exhibit hosted by the Make Studio in Hampden. The activity allows the opportunity for each artist to express themselves through their work and explore their creativity.

A highlight of Cason’s time with the department is when she served as the volunteer chair for the 2008 National Recreation and Park Association Conference. Of her time as volunteer chair, she said, “It was a tremendous amount of work, but amazing to meet Recreation and Parks professionals from across the country.” She recalls the experience as “professionally rewarding.”

Reflecting on her time spent with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, JoAnn says, “It has been an incredible experience. We have a great team of people who are bright, devoted and passionate about their various areas of expertise. I encourage everyone to keep doing what they're doing and to continue heading in the right direction under Director Moore’s leadership.” RECREATION

The Middle Branch Fitness + Wellness Center at Cherry Hill and surrounding site improvements to Reedbird Park were conceived with the idea of connectivity. The new regional facility and park amenities will serve to connect with the adjacent community and surrounding neighborhoods. It will provide a hub for indoor and outdoor recreation, fitness and wellness. The new plan will tie existing trail networks and extensions to new places. This project will establish a gateway into Cherry Hill while encouraging exchange, interaction and collaboration with all South Baltimore residents. The 42,000-square-foot building will serve as a beacon for recreation in South Baltimore. The building includes a natatorium, gymnasium, fitness studios, walking track, community room, maker space and a prep kitchen all stitched together by an airy central spine of open fitness. It has been designed with amenities and program opportunities that will serve a variety of users young and young at heart. Especially unique to the structure is a tenth of a mile second-floor walking track that engages users with views of multiple interior spaces and the expansive park outside.

60 @RecNParks The Park: Reedbird Park Improvements Reedbird Park has both natural beauty and rare direct access to the Patapsco River. Through extensive environmental testing and coordination with the Maryland Department of the Environment, BCRP has formulated a plan to make improvements to the site while ensuring public health and safety. Upon completion, this site will include lighted and irrigated multipurpose fields, lighted synthetic turf field, playground, walking trails, fishing pier, dog park, basketball courts and pavilions. Connection to the existing Middle Branch Trail will be enhanced while provisions for a future connection to the Patapsco Heritage Greenway Trail are made.
