A P PEA R ANCE The Cylburn House and Park Historic District i s loca t ed in northwest Baltimore City on the east side of Gre e n Spr ing Ave nue and adj acent to the wes t side o f the Pe nnsylvania Railroad tracks . The architec t of Cylbur n House , George A. Frederick, de signed the struclurc i n Hr~ nuissancc Reviva l -style il nd constructed the m.Jnsion of clrc..:sscd ~ne. i. ss stone , guarri c ci i n the Bare Hills area of Baltimore County . The building is two-and-one-half stories with a three and-one-half s tory towe r on the principle (south) facade : A one-story , open veranda exten ds around the south and .west s i des of the house . On the west there is a 11 porte-cochere , 11 formerly a carriage e ntrance. Cylburn House h a s a hip-on VI hip roof with a kick , or "bell-cast, 11 at the eaves . Narrow, m elongated , paned dormers in the lowe• h ip have curved roofs . m A bracketed, exter ior cornice with dentils surrounds the house . The second story window lin tels are rectanqular while the f irst floor window lint els are curved and the win z dow as a unit extends to t he veranda floor . The veranda cor nice is plain with den tils only . The porch roof is supported by square columns with scrolled fretwork bracke ts at the ;o juncture of the cornice a nd each pie r . c The tower projects above the south wa ll and roof . A n three-window s e micircular 11 bay wi!ldow" on the second fJ oor ..... projects from the south tower-wall and s upports a t hird floor balcony . Two floor-length , narrow window-doors ope n 0 onto the t hird-floor balcony. Each of the pair has semi z circular s tone trim. The tower cornice, above the third f loor window-doors , is bracke ted and above this is a four sided Mansard towe r roof with a round-head dormer , one in t h e e ast and one in the west roof face of the tower. A two-story stone wing extends from the north side of the building . Although no longer a private residence several interior details in Cylburn House remain : in the vestibule the floor and side walls are covered with mosaics , and the wreath de sign in the f loor is partially repea ted in the leaded glass over the door ; in the first floor hallway are hung tapestries believed to be of Belgian origin; four rooms on this floor have ~arble fireplaces , each of a different design . The grand stairway is finished in black walnut and the parquet floors are of maple , oak and black walnut . The drawing room (1971 ) on the first floor was copied from the residence of a French Minister of Finance at Rauen , France . The dining room (1971) contains the escutcheons of the Tyson and Johns Families . I t represents a n educational alternative use for a large z nineteenth-ce ntury house and its extensive grounds in any 0 city. It typifies status as constructed for a late nineteenth century O\vner of exceptional weal th , and the success re sulting from engaging a good architect . The house is s ignificant as an example of a post-Civil Wa r "mansion" many of which have already been cJemolished . Its designer, George A . Frederick (1842-1924), was one of the most i mportant late nineteenth-century architects woci:ing in Baltimore .
