This chapter explores the fundamentals of such waves looking at trends in output, productivity, domestic and foreign consumption, commercial agreements and economic policies. The first two waves came to halt as conditions in the foreign markets changed, because they did not have a solid domestic base of production and commercialization. The chapter argues that the third wave is of a different kind as it developed from a more solid domestic base of the wine sector that had developed for decades based on domestic consumption. Thus we may conclude that wine globalization is also about changing domestic economic conditions. The process was however long and painful, as the sector had a very irregular performance throughout the 20th century which is however related to the overall backwardness of the Portuguese economy in the European context. Introdução A plataforma litoral da Estremadura é afectada por um sistema de estruturas diapíricas de orientação geral NNE-SSW, com troços de contorno irregular e limitadas por escarpas de falha. Deste sistema destaca-se a falha que origina o “Diapiro das Caldas da Rainha”, identificada entre Pombal e a Praia de Santa Cruz, com expressão geomorfológica particularmente clara entre a Nazaré, Serra d’El-Rei e Bolhos, numa faixa com cerca de 30 km de comprimento e 2 a 8 km de largura. A erosão do núcleo desta estrutura tectónica durante o Quaternário deu origem a uma depressão, em grande parte inundada pela transgressão flandriana. Com o presente estudo pretende-se analisar o enchimento holocénico da depressão, incidindo em particular no antigo estuário lagunar da Pederneira. A interpretação da série sedimentar é baseada em sondagens realizadas na planície aluvial actual. O estudo da evolução da área lagunar inclui a definição da extensão máxima, estabelecendo-se correlações entre o enchimento, a informação histórica e as variações do nível do mar de escala regional ou global. Através desta análise se pode, em corolário, tentar avaliar a influência relativa e mútua dos forçadores naturais e antrópicos, podendo contribuir para aferir as fragilidades ambientais ou os limiares de absorção do impacto antrópico.
