  • Phonetic Evidence for the Contact-Induced Prosody in Budai Rukai *
    Concentric: Studies in Linguistics 37.2 (July 2011):123-154 Phonetic Evidence for the Contact-Induced Prosody in Budai Rukai * Chun-Mei Chen National Chung Hsing University This paper investigates the contact-induced prosody in Budai Rukai, an Austronesian language spoken in Taiwan. By providing phonetic representations of word stress shift in Budai Rukai, the contact-induced prosody has been further verified. The contrastive stress in the Budai dialect is in the process of developing predictable penultimate stress resulting in innovations in new settlements. Budai Rukai speakers who have frequent contact with Paiwan speakers tend to produce the Paiwan stress patterns. The prosodic change has applied an optional rule of extrametricality, and echo vowels have been treated as proper vowels in the varieties. Antepenultimate stress becomes penultimate stress in trisyllabic or longer prosodic words, with a release from extrametricality. Results also suggest that speaker variability affected the stress shift in Budai Rukai. Keywords: phonetic evidence, contact-induced prosody, Budai Rukai, stress 1. Introduction This paper investigates word-level phonetic features of the varieties of Budai Rukai, and I propose that the prosodic varieties of Budai Rukai have undergone a change due to language contact. Stress in Budai Rukai has been a controversial issue (Li 1977, Ross 1992, Blust 1997). Previous studies address the stress issue mainly within the work of historical reconstruction. None of the existing studies have made a careful examination on the prosodic phonology of stress in Budai Rukai, let alone empirical evidence for the innovation of the prosodic patterns. The controversy of the Rukai stress lies in the inconsistency with the penultimate prominence or “paroxytones”, following the practice of Zorc (1983), and the phonological environments in which predictable stress patterns are attested.

    Villains of Formosan Aboriginal Mythology Aaron Valdis Gauss 高加州 Intergrams 20.1 (2020): http://benz.nchu.edu.tw/~intergrams/intergrams/201/201-gauss.pdf ISSN: 1683-4186 ABSTRACT In Western fairy tales, the role of the villain is often reserved for the elderly woman. The villains of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are all witches; women who wield dark magic to maledict the innocent. In stark contrast, Formosan aboriginal mythology villains take on decidedly dissimilar roles. In the Paiwan story of Pali, for example, Pali is a young boy who, through no fault of his own, is cursed with a pair of red eyes that instantaneously kill all living things that they see. Pali’s identity and the reasons for his evil acts are diametrically opposed to those found in “typical” Western tales. This article investigates the identities and motives of villains in Formosan aboriginal stories. Despite the unfortunate lack of related material in English, Taiwan Indigene: Meaning Through Stories (臺灣原住民的神話與傳說套書) offers a unique look into the redirection of English literature to source from a wider geographic and ethnographic perspective and serves as the primary data source for this research. Works done in this vein indicate a greater openness toward the “other” ethnic groups that remain almost completely absent from English literature. The identities of the villains and the elements motivating their nefarious deeds are investigated in detail. Can the villains of such stories be grouped broadly according to identity? If so, what aspects can be used to describe that identity? What root causes can be identified with regard to the malevolent acts that they perpetrate? The ambitions behind this study include facilitating a lifting of the veil on the mysterious cultures native to Formosa and promoting a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the rich and complex myths of the Formosan aboriginal peoples.

Feenstra Dept. of Economics, University of California, Davis and National Bureau of Economic Research Revised, October 1997 Abstract This paper describes a database of business groups in South Korea and Taiwan. The most detailed data are available for 1989 in South Korea and 1994 for Taiwan, though additional information is provided for the groups in both countries in 1983 and 1986. The detailed data includes a transactions matrix for each major business group, which specifies the sales to other member firms within the group, as well as total sales and other information for each firm. Thus, the detailed data can be used to construct measures of the vertical integration for each business group, and can also be used to analyze their sales across different sectors of the economy. These results are reported in the paper, along with documentation of the variables included in the database.     Describing the morphology of Amis Kazuhiro Imanishi University of Tokyo, JSPS Research Fellow Amis is an Austronesian language spoken in Taiwan. Typologically, it belongs to the Philippine-type languages and, along with other indigenous languages spoken in Taiwan, shares a number of similarities with Philippine languages. Phonologically, the language is rather simple; it has 21 phonemes, (C)V(C) syllable Figure 1 Map of East Asia structure, and few phonological rules. Morphologically, the language is complex and owns a rich variety of affixes. It has a complex system of voice alternation, which is traditionally called “focus system”. The word order is relatively free except that the predicate basically precedes its arguments. 1. About my research 1.1. Why Amis? As I was studying linguistic in my undergraduate course, I came to know that a lot of minority languages of the world are dying out; I definitely wanted to conduct a field research of any endangered language. Taiwan used to be a colony of Japan until 1945 and Figure 2 Map of Taiwan old people there still speak Japanese (my mother tongue) well. It is geographically very close to Japan, and living expenses there are not high. These all factors led me to choose one of the minority languages spoken in Taiwan. In my undergraduate course, I had not taken any course on field method; there are, in fact, no course on field method at my former university; therefore, I thought I was difficult to conduct a research on a literally “dying” language, such as Kanakanavu or Saaroa. Amis is the largest indigenous language in Taiwan, with approximately 50,000 to 80,000 speakers; there is no reference grammar which is based on adequate knowledge of linguistics.

    1 “BECOMING JAPANESE:” IDENTITY UNDER JAPANESE OCCUPATION GRADES: 9-12 AUTHOR: Katherine Murphy TOPIC/THEME: Japanese Occupation, World War II, Korean Culture, Identity TIME REQUIRED: Two 60-minute periods BACKGROUND: The lesson is based on the impact of the Japanese occupation of Korea during World War II on Korean culture and identity. In particular, the lesson focuses on the Japanese campaign in 1940 to encourage Koreans to abandon their Korean names and adopt Japanese names. This campaign was known as “sōshi-kaimei." The purpose of this campaign, along with campaigns requiring Koreans to recite an oath to the Japanese Emperor and bow at Shinto shrines, were to make the Korean people “Japanese” and hopefully, loyal subjects of the Japanese Empire by abandoning their Korean identity and loyalties. These cultural policies and campaigns were key to the Japanese war effort during World War II. The lesson draws from the students’ lives as well as two books: Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim and Under the Black Umbrella: Voices from Colonial Korea 1910-1945 by Hildi Kang. CURRICULUM CONNECTION: The lesson is intended to use the major themes from the summer reading book Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood to introduce students to one of the five essential questions of the World History II course: How is identity constructed? How does identity impact human experience? In first investigating the origin of their own names and the meaning of Korean names, students can begin to explore the question “How is identity constructed?’ In examining how and why the Japanese sought to change the Korean people’s names, religion, etc during World War II, students will understand how global events such as World War II can impact an individual.

The phonetic phenomenon “ping split into yin and yang” 平分阴阳 is one of the most important changes of Chinese tones in the early modern Chinese, which is reflected clearly in Zhongyuan Yinyun 中原音韵 by Zhou Deqing 周德清 (1277-1356) in the Yuan Dynasty. The authors of this paper think the phe- nomenon “ping split into yin and yang” should not have occurred so late as in the Yuan Dynasty, based on previous research results and modern Chinese dialects, making use of historical comparative method and rhyming books. The changes of tones have close relationship with the voiced and voiceless initials in Chinese, and the voiced initials have turned into voiceless in Song Dynasty, so it could not be in the Yuan Dynasty that ping split into yin and yang, but no later than the Song Dynasty.

In the process of research, the origin and development of Song-Jiang Battle Array are emerging step by step, which demonstrates that development and evolvement of Song-Jiang Battle Array are most related to contemporaneous social formations. By delineating care for the elderly both in policy and practice, the study examines how relationships between indigeneity and coloniality are realized in today’s multicultural Taiwan. Decolonial scholars have argued that greater recognition of Indigenous rights is not the end of Indigenous peoples’ struggles. Social policy has much to learn from encountering its colonial past, in particular its links to colonization and assimilation. Meanwhile, coloniality continues to make the Indigenous perspective invisible, and imperialism continues to frame Indigenous peoples’ contemporary experience in how policies are constructed.
