PR Golnaz Fathi AB43 DE PRESSETEXT, 28. Juli 2017 «Traces of Yesterday» – Solo-Ausstellung mit GOLNAZ FATHI AB43 CONTEMPORARY, Orangerie, Im Park 2, Thalwil/Zürich Öffentliche Vernissage: Samstag, 2. September 2017, 13.00 – 16.00 Uhr Ausstellungsdauer: 2. September – 7. Oktober 2017 Artist Talk: Samstag, 2. New York; Asian Civilization’s Museum, Singapur; The British Museum, London; Brighton Museum, Brighton; Hove Museum, Hove, Carnegie Mellon University, Doha; Museum of Islamic Art, Malaysia; Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi and The Farjam Foundation, Dubai. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IRANIAN ARTIST GOLNAZ FATHI TURNS CALLIGRAPHIC WRITING INTO ABSTRACT PAINTING, COMBINING ELEMENTS OF EAST AND WEST Exhibition dates: April 11 – May 11, 2013 Opening cocktail reception: Thursday, April 11, 6 - 8 pm Untitled, 2011, acrylic, pen and varnish on canvas, 70.9 x 88.6 inches New York, March 21, 2013—For her debut solo exhibition in New York, Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi—who divides her time between Tehran and Paris—presents recent works on canvas that draw on her long practice of traditional Iranian calligraphy. Fathi works in fine pen, mostly on varnished raw, rectangular, polyptych canvases, in a limited palette of white, black, red and yellow. She layers the surface of the canvas with thousands of minute marks that echo the curvilinear forms of calligraphic letters and words. These intricate lines coalesce into minimalist compositions that can be read in multiple ways—as landscapes, electronic transmissions or atmospheric phenomena. She refrains from titling her works, which allows the viewer free reign to assign his or her own interpretation. (continued) The basis of Fathi’s practice is siah-mashq, a traditional exercise in which the calligrapher writes large, cursive letters across the page in a dense, semi-abstract formation. The letters aren’t meant to form words or convey meaning, but rather strengthen the skill of the scribe. Fathi reinterprets this technique, drawing inspiration from various Western and Eastern sources, including American Abstract Expressionism, as well as the work of Iranian and Middle Eastern modernists who pioneered the use of the written word as a pictorial element in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

  • Discover “Asia Abstract” with Opera Gallery the Art Exhibition Launches 28 Sept – 31 Oct, 2018
Discover “Asia Abstract” with Opera Gallery The Art Exhibition Launches 28 Sept – 31 Oct, 2018 (Left to right – Afjehee Nasrollah - Untitled, Chu The-Chun - 26 Mars, Shiraga Kazuo – Untitled) (Hong Kong – 21st August 2018) Opera Gallery will unveil a new group exhibition end September that celebrates the history and heritage of Asian art. Through abstract art, the exhibition will launch a dialogue that interlinks the past and present, traditional and modern designs, and Eastern and Western influences. Created through time-honored practices of traditional Asian art, each piece will reflect the artist’s diverse cultural background and experiences abroad. With specialized skills in ancient Middle Eastern calligraphy, traditional Chinese ink wash painting, and Korean scroll painting and papermaking, the exhibition will showcase artwork that have been crafted using painstaking attention, effort and time. “Asia Abstract” will boast a collection that fuses traditional methods with modern techniques. Conceptualized by the innovative artists, modern techniques reflect the artists’ state of mind and effectively address the themes of national identity, nature and humanity. Exhibition Highlights: Featured Chinese-French artists, Zao Wou-Ki (b. 1920), Chu Teh-Chun (b. 1920) and Feng Xiao-Min (b. 1959) are known for their modernist approach in integrating traditional Chinese brush-and-ink technique with Western abstract art. Over the course of their artistic career in France, the artists have acquired techniques passed on by European masters and have adopted manners of abstract expressionism and lyrical abstraction. The rhythmic nuances demonstrated in their bold sweeping strokes of colours are reminiscent of Chinese landscape paintings. While the message of the artwork may be elusive, viewers are left to bask in the immense beauty and strong emotional impact derived from the artwork’s depth, poetry and musicality.

  • THE LINE of MARCH Pouran Jinchi September 13 – October 21, 2017
THE LINE OF MARCH Pouran Jinchi September 13 – October 21, 2017 The Third Line is proud to present The Line of March, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Pouran Jinchi. With her new body of work, Pouran returns to a fundamental preoccupation—the parallels between art and language as modes of communication—while extending her artistic expression in new directions. Pouran Jinchi, J as Juliet, 2017, Enamel on MDF panels, 76 x 137 cm The artist quietly inventories the unspoken traces of endless wars, perpetual conflict, and pervasive militarism. For months, she has been pouring over documents on the visual apparatus of military power, noting the discreet ways these tonalities seep into culture. From Morse code and phonetic alphabets to military insignia and medals, from war paint to camouflage, Pouran takes stock of a pervasive military aesthetic. Her research extends to the ways military jargon permeates our common language, jotting notes in her notebooks—deployed, regimented, cypher, war of words, occupied. All of it becomes source material for her artworks. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from a painting by the 18th century French artist Jean-Antoine Watteau, who depicted the lives of common soldiers in times of war. Pouran studied photographs of the German city of Koblenz, where architectural fragments that remain from the destruction of WWII have been integrated into modern architecture. She unearthed a black and white photograph from 1920s Leningrad showing Soviet chess masters playing the game on a massive chessboard at the Palace Square using soldiers from the Red Army as the black pieces and sailors from the navy for the white pieces.

  • For Immediate Release Iranian Artist Golnaz Fathi Presents Abstract Paintings Rooted in Persian Calligraphy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IRANIAN ARTIST GOLNAZ FATHI PRESENTS ABSTRACT PAINTINGS ROOTED IN PERSIAN CALLIGRAPHY Exhibition title: Every Breaking Wave Exhibition dates: November 4 to December 6 2015 Private preview: Wednesday, November 4, 6:30 to 8:30 pm Contact us: +852 2581 9678/[email protected] Untitled, 2015, acrylic and pen on canvas, 11.8 x 23.6 inches/30 x 60 cm Hong Kong, October 4, 2015—Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi, who divides her time between Tehran and Paris, presents new and recent paintings on canvas for her debut solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Drawing on her extensive training as a classical calligrapher, Fathi uses texts and letters as formal elements, transforming traditional calligraphy into a personal artistic language. Using fine pen, mostly on varnished raw, rectangular, polyptych canvases, Fathi draws thousands of minute marks that echo the curvilinear forms of calligraphic letters and words. The basis of Fathi’s current practice is a reinterpretation of siah-mashq or “black practice,” a traditional exercise in which the calligrapher writes large, cursive letters repeatedly across the page in a dense, semi- abstract formation. This is the calligrapher’s practice sheet and the letters are not meant to form legible words or convey meaning, but rather strengthen the skill and the hand of the scribe. For Fathi, this is the most artistic aspect of the revered tradition of calligraphy because each sheet has a degree of freedom and uniqueness unseen in the finished script. Drawing inspiration from various Western and Eastern sources, including American Abstract Expressionism, as well as the work of Iranian and Middle Eastern modernists who pioneered the use of the written word as a pictorial element in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Fathi transforms siah-mashq into intricate compositions.

  • Crossfades and Drawn Forms GOLNAZ FATHI, LAN ZHENGHUI Duo Exhibition
Singapore Crossfades and Drawn Forms GOLNAZ FATHI, LAN ZHENGHUI duo exhibition Exhibition Dates 2 September–11 November, 2018 Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–7pm; Sunday, noon–6pm Venue Pearl Lam Galleries, 9 Lock Road, #03-22, Gillman Barracks, Singapore 108937 Singapore—Pearl Lam Galleries is pleased to present Crossfades and Drawn Forms, a duo exhibition featuring a selection of works by Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi and Chinese artist Lan Zhenghui. Transforming the gallery interior into an echo chamber of lines and interventions, the exhibiting works include paintings, a series of lightboxes, and a video projection. Reinterpreting classical forms, Fathi’s free abstractions of the written word coalesce with Lan’s monumental ink landscapes to form an undulating visual rhapsody. The spiritual and intuitive strokes central to the artists’ processes of creation unravel themselves upon closer scrutiny, juxtaposing introspection with expression. Fathi’s practice is rooted in traditional Persian calligraphy, a sacred form of art in the Islamic world. Her motivation is derived from the calligrapher’s warm-up exercise known as shiah mashgh, or “black practice”, where letters are repeated until the page is saturated with black ink. Fathi employs this technique with reverence and delight; she considers it the most natural representation of an artist’s individuality. Making contemporary works after years of calligraphy training, Fathi’s every gesture on canvas is charged with liberating emotion. Her latest pen on canvas series is directed by her withdrawn state of consciousness, a collision of persistence and surprises as the quivering lines break free of Arabic script. In contrast, her untitled acrylic on canvas work is more controlled with the brushstrokes a graphic intersection of hand and heart becoming one.
