Running until April 2011, a four-part show at the Meem Gallery places the work of 12 contemporary Iraqi artists in the spotlight. Many of the artists showcasing at the exhibitions had shows in Iraq during the 1980s onwards, staying in the country during the Iran-Iraq War, the 1991 Gulf War and economic sanctions, while several have only recently left. Their experiences - both in Iraq and in the diaspora - are often reflected in their fascinating work. Two days after he landed, Iraqi tanks were deployed into Iran; as hostilities unfurled, Azzawi escaped to London where he has lived ever since.

  • Contemporary Islamic Graffiti: the New Illuminated Manuscript
Contemporary Islamic Graffiti: The New Illuminated Manuscript Click the following video link on contemporary Graffiti artist Mohammed Ali. Mohammed was invited to be a part of the Eid Festival at the Riksatern Theatre in Gothenburg Sweden, by the British Council in Seden. He painted a unique cube over a 2 day period outside of the museum, where he engages with the people around him while he paints. http://www.aerosolarabic.com/portfolio/mohammed-ali-in- sweden/ Overview The following lesson is part of a Visual Arts instructional unit exploring Graffiti as a visual art form expressing contemporary ideas of Islamic culture. Historically, Illuminated manuscripts (especially Illuminated Qur’ans) were instrumental in spreading ideas of Islam. The function, form and style development of Illuminated manuscripts correlated with the need to not only record and spread the revelations bestowed upon the prophet Muhammad, but also to signify the importance and reverence of the word of Allah. Contemporary Islamic Graffiti developed in response to a need to illuminate contemporary ideas of Islam in a visual platform that is not only visually captivating, but in the public sphere. Graffiti tends to challenge perceptions and hold a visual mirror up for society to reflect upon cultural practices and structures. Contemporary Islamic Graffiti artists Muhammed Ali and eL Seed are creating a platform for spreading contemporary ideas of Islam and challenging stereotypes and perceptions of Muslims and Islam as a monolithic religion. In this unit, students will first explore the visual art form of historic Illuminated Manuscripts and engage in critical analysis of at least one historic work.

  • For Immediate Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IRANIAN ARTIST GOLNAZ FATHI TURNS CALLIGRAPHIC WRITING INTO ABSTRACT PAINTING, COMBINING ELEMENTS OF EAST AND WEST Exhibition dates: April 11 – May 11, 2013 Opening cocktail reception: Thursday, April 11, 6 - 8 pm Untitled, 2011, acrylic, pen and varnish on canvas, 70.9 x 88.6 inches New York, March 21, 2013—For her debut solo exhibition in New York, Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi—who divides her time between Tehran and Paris—presents recent works on canvas that draw on her long practice of traditional Iranian calligraphy. Fathi works in fine pen, mostly on varnished raw, rectangular, polyptych canvases, in a limited palette of white, black, red and yellow. She layers the surface of the canvas with thousands of minute marks that echo the curvilinear forms of calligraphic letters and words. These intricate lines coalesce into minimalist compositions that can be read in multiple ways—as landscapes, electronic transmissions or atmospheric phenomena. She refrains from titling her works, which allows the viewer free reign to assign his or her own interpretation. (continued) The basis of Fathi’s practice is siah-mashq, a traditional exercise in which the calligrapher writes large, cursive letters across the page in a dense, semi-abstract formation. The letters aren’t meant to form words or convey meaning, but rather strengthen the skill of the scribe. Fathi reinterprets this technique, drawing inspiration from various Western and Eastern sources, including American Abstract Expressionism, as well as the work of Iranian and Middle Eastern modernists who pioneered the use of the written word as a pictorial element in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

  • Naser Hassan AI-Rifaei
The Principle of Movement in Moroccan Design; as a source of inspiration for contemporary artistic applications Practice-based research in Art and Design Naser Hassan AI-Rifaei A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2009 University of Brighton Abstract This project focuses on utilizing the principle of movement contained in traditional Moroccan design (PMMD) for the production of new and inventive artworks. The PMMD is one of the main concepts that rules the creation and construction of design elements; it consists of a group of advanced technical procedures applied to achieve the highest levels of unity, harmony, variation and rhythm between lines and shapes. Great consideration in the PMMD is given to the viewer's perception, as all parts are formed to be equally interesting and to work harmoniously together suggesting ways for the viewer's eye to interact with and move in and throughout the composition. The purpose of this research is to examine viable methods for stimulating new ideas by taking the aesthetic and technical significances of the PMMD as a source of creative inspiration. The work involved analyzing the relationship between form, method and perception in traditional compositions by exploring the role of PMMD in 1) the process of creating and shaping design elements separately, 2) methods of relating the lines and shapes of different design components. Data on PMMD was collected from recent literature on Islamic art and Moroccan design, from interviews with master-craftsmen, and from my personal analyses and observations.

  • Cultural Continuity in Modern Iraqi Painting Between 1950- 1980
Vol.14/No.47/May 2017 Received 2016/06/13 Accepted 2016/11/02 Persian translation of this paper entitled: تداوم فرهنگی در نقاشی مدرن عراق بین سال های 1950 و 1980 is also published in this issue of journal. Cultural Continuity in Modern Iraqi Painting between 1950- 1980 Shakiba Sharifian* Mehdi Mohammadzade** Silvia Naef*** Mostafa Mehraeen**** Abstract Since the early years of 1950, which represent the development period of modern Iraqi art, the “return to the roots” movement has been an impartible mainstream in Iraq. The first generation of modern artists like Jewad Salim and Shakir Hassan Al-Said considered “cultural continuity” and the link between “tradition and modernity” and “inspiration from heritage1” as the main essence of their artistic creation and bequeathed this approach to their next generation. Having analyzed and described a selection of artworks of modern Iraqi artists, this paper discusses the evolution of modern Iraqi art, and aims to determine cultural and artistic continuity in modern paintings of Iraq. It also seeks to answer the questions that investigate the socio-cultural factors that underlie the formation of art and establish a link between traditional and modern ideas and lead to continuity in tradition. Therefore, the research hypothesis is put to scrutiny on the basis of Robert wuthnow’s theory. According to Wuthnow, although configuration and the objective production of this movement is rooted in the “mobilization of resources”, the artistic content and approach of the painting movement (i.e. the continuation of the tradition along with addressing modern ideas) is influenced by factors such as “social Horizon”, “existing discursive context” and “cultural capital” of the painters.
