In which European countries top leagues would you find the following teams playing in ? a) Iskra-Stal b) Doxa Katokopia c) Spartak Myjava ( Answers on Page 23) 4 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 33 ‘I think anyone who has a decent knowledge of football at this level will appreciate how tough this seasons’ Premier League is ..’ Our last home game against Pollok might not have seen us turn in our most stylish of performance of the season but you won’t hear any complaints from me because I just thought it was a really good three points for us to bank. Once again I was delighted with the players’ attitude as they went about their business with plenty of desire and commitment. I would obviously rather Moff had stuck away his late penalty as it would have been an easier final ten minutes or so for us all but anyway, we got there in the end. I am satisfied that we are keeping our head above the water as far as the league table is con- cerned. I think anyone who has a decent knowledge of football at this level will appreciate how tough this seasons’ Premier League is and if you take a close look at the league table you’ll soon appreciate what I’m talking about. Unlike previous years there are no whipping boys in this league and as far as I can see there are no easy games. The team currently at the bottom of the league [Shotts] are Scottish Cup holders and have recently made it through to the last eight again this season. Only two places above them are last season league champions and the club with possibly the biggest wage bill in Junior football, Irvine Meadow. Even at this stage the fight to finish above the play-off position looks like developing in to a tense affair for some reputable clubs. So, I know we’re not out the woods yet but taking everything into account I think our boys are currently doing okay and long may that continue. The big games keep coming again this week as we welcome Auchinleck Talbot to Holm Park. The Ayrshire outfit are currently hot favourites to win the Premier league and to be honest; it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if they added the Scottish Cup to that! Our first half capitulation at Beechwood in late October was probably our worst showing this season and despite gaining a bit of pride with an improved second half display, I certainly don’t want to find myself in a similar position at half-time in today’s game! Not that we need it but an added incentive for us today is the fact that a victory would move us into third posi- tion in the league due to Rob Roy playing a Scottish Cup tie, therefore I’m really looking forward to this challenge. If we are to take anything from this game we’ll need everyone in a Bankies jersey playing at the top of their game. The players will also need all the help possible if they are to achieve that target and once again any vocal assistance from the terracing would be appreciated.

    The People’s Game and Community Ownership of Football Clubs: A Mutual Solution to a Market Problem Sean Hamil, School of Management, Birkbeck College, University of London Stephen Morrow, Department of Sports Studies, The University of Stirling Football clubs are ostensibly uncomplicated organisations: they exist to facilitate participation in, and the spectating of, organised football. But beyond this plain statement there is a complex and contested debate about the objectives and purpose of these clubs. In England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland most football clubs are constituted as private limited companies with private shareholders. Yet they rarely make a profit their owners seeming more intent on `utility’ maximisation and despite a huge increase in revenues over the last 15 years the football industry remains financially unstable (Deloitte 2008; PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2007). In fact clubs are effectively regarded as social and cultural institutions by their supporters – their key community or stakeholder This raises the question: if football clubs are effectively not-for-profit institutions then would it not be more appropriate to structure them as such, as explicitly not- for-profit community benefit mutually owned organisations controlled by their supporters? Scottish Football Finance A review of the recent financial history of the Scottish Premier League is chastening reading for anyone who believes that Scottish football operates according to the profit-maximising principles of market economic theory. Following combined pre-tax losses by the twelve SPL clubs of -£63m in 2001/2002, -£53m in 2002/2003, and -£14m in 2003/2004, the combined SPL clubs made their first ever combined profit in 2004/05 (£3m) since the league’s inception in the 1997/98 season.

Every so often a book is published that simply blows you away with its astonishing depth of research and mind-blowing collection of historical photographs. Simon Inglis’s football grounds books fell into that category, so too did the Geoff Wilde/Michael Braham history of Southport FC in the Football League, the Sandgrounders; and Gary James's history of football in Manchester. Another book has just been published that falls into that august listing- Played in Glasgow by Ged O’Brien, part of the sporting heritage series involving the iconoclastic Inglis is a simply wonderfully researched, written and designed piece of work. On a gloriously sunny afternoon there’s time to potter around Glasgow and visit some of the historic sites in the book before making one’s way along the north bank of the Clyde towards the old ship-building town of Clydebank. Hamilton Crescent, home to the West of Scotland cricket club, staged the first ever soccer international between Scotland and England in 1872 and is well worth a visit. It’s only a few minutes’ drive from Yoker. Clydebank isn’t mentioned in the book for one simple reason- as you venture along the A814 out of Glasgow you exit greater Glasgow and enter Dunbartonshire and before too long the home of Yorker Athletic JFC, Holm Park, can be spotted on the left-hand side close to where the ferry connects the north side of the Clyde to Renfrew and the south.

    T HE evening TIMES SCOTTISH JUNIOR HISTORIES 1932-33 ARTICLES BY “JUNIOR VETERAN” COMPILED BY MARK DONNELLY INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Throughout the 1932-33 season, the much missed “Saturday Pink” edition of the Evening Times ran a series of articles detailing histories of some of the prominent Scottish Junior clubs of the time. The articles were all written by the columnist “Junior Veteran” I have collated these articles into a single booklet in the hope that they may be of interest to historians of all grades of the Scottish game. Some of the articles were accompanied by a photograph relating to the featured team. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, these are not reproduced here. The articles can be viewed in their entirety on the 2nd floor of Glasgow’s Mitchell Library. The content of the articles remains as it was when printed originally. Some minor changes have been made to the format in team line-ups and honours lists. Any additional corrections have been listed at the end of each article.
