We finished last season on a high with a deserved Central League Cup final win. Our haul of two cups and a top four finish were fine achievements and needless to say we will strive to do even better this term. In the summer three players – Vinnie Berry, Ross McPherson and Ciaran McElroy moved on to senior football. While it is always sad to see players moving on, we can take some satisfaction that all three leave Clydebank as better players than when they arrived, That is down to them, first and foremost, but like Darian before them the trio have benefited hugely from their time at Clydebank. The challenge now is to find equally capable , if not better players who will help us continue to improve. As a club we simply don't have the financial resources of most of the teams in our league so player development is vital. On the subject of finance, it is always worth plugging the 100 Club – our scheme that urges fans to pay a minimum of £100 a year to help boost our funds. We need as many people as possible to join and help support the club in this way, so if you haven't yet joined and can afford to do so, seek out Bill Abraham and fill in a form. Our AGM takes place next month and I would urge all Trust members to attend. The meeting is usu- ally well supported and it is the best forum for a frank discussion among all those who care about Clydebank FC. I appreciate that some fans my have to travel a fair distance to attend but it is only once a year so I would ask as many as possible to make the effort. Finally, thanks to Hamilton Accies for coming along to Holm Park tonight. It's an exciting time for the New Douglas Park side as they prepare for their return to top flight football. I'm sure we will all be keeping an eye on their results thanks to the presence of Darian MacKinnon whose transfer to the Accies from Clydebank is the reason this match is being played. We have all enjoyed seeing Darian perform so well and make a career for himself as a professional football player. Hopefully, Daz and Accies have a season to remember. Enjoy the match.

DUNDEE UNITED ON THIS DAY JANUARY 11 Dundee United On This Day THURSDAY 1st JANUARY 2015 A great start to 2015 as United thump Dundee in the new year derby at Tannadice, in front of 13,000 fans. Stuart Armstrong deflects a Chris Erskine shot into the Dundee net in the first minute, and an Erskine strike and a Gary Mackay-Steven double make it 4-1 by half-time. Jaroslaw Fojut and Charlie Telfer add two more in the second half, and the 6-2 final score puts United third in the Premiership, just three points behind Aberdeen and two behind Celtic. WEDNESDAY 1st JANUARY 1913 Dumbarton are the new year’s day visitors at Tannadice, but, although a railway special brings 300 fans through from the west coast, The Dundee Evening Telegraph reports that very few of them make it to the game, presumably as a side effect of their new year celebrations. The Dumbarton players, on the other hand, show no sign of any hangover as they start brightly in a match full of chances, but Dundee Hibernian – as the club were called before changing their name to United – come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3. THURSDAY 2nd JANUARY 1958 United beat East Stirling 7-0. Jimmy Brown and Wilson Humphries both grab doubles, and Allan Garvie, Willie McDonald and Joe Roy score once each. Twenty-year-old Aberdonian defender Ron Yeats makes his debut in the match. He features prominently for United for four seasons, before, in 1961, he’s sold for £30,000 to Liverpool, where he becomes hugely influential and plays over 450 games.

  • Reframing Scottish Football: Strategy and the Short-Term Nature of the Football Industry
Edinburgh Napier University Business School Reframing Scottish Football: Strategy and the short-term nature of the football industry Stephen Robertson Doctor of Business Administration A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Edinburgh Napier University, for the award of Doctor of Business Administration July 2015 “In human behavior there was always uncertainty and risk. The goal of the Oakland front office was simply to minimize the risk. Their solution wasn’t perfect, it was just better than the hoary alternative, rendering decisions by gut feeling.” Lewis (2011 p.136) Abstract Despite football being deeply entrenched in Scottish culture it is under- researched from a business perspective. This research develops a conceptual framework that views professional football clubs from a number of different perspectives. It draws on strategic management literature since this views the firm as the intersection between internal competence, customer perception and competition within an industry. A review of previous sports business research highlighted five main themes that were used to create a structure for the analysis: on-field performance, attendance, finance, the playing squad and the manager. These themes were used as frames to view the firms within the industry from a number of different perspectives. Each frame allows a different aspect of the firm to be considered singly in turn and then collectively to develop a deeper understanding of the existing frames in use within the industry. The research is based on a pragmatic philosophy that allows mixed methods to be combined to provide both an objective and subjective view of the industry. The subjective view was drawn from five interviews with senior figures within Scottish professional football.

  • The People's Game and Community Ownership of Football Clubs
The People’s Game and Community Ownership of Football Clubs: A Mutual Solution to a Market Problem Sean Hamil, School of Management, Birkbeck College, University of London Stephen Morrow, Department of Sports Studies, The University of Stirling Football clubs are ostensibly uncomplicated organisations: they exist to facilitate participation in, and the spectating of, organised football. But beyond this plain statement there is a complex and contested debate about the objectives and purpose of these clubs. In England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland most football clubs are constituted as private limited companies with private shareholders. Yet they rarely make a profit their owners seeming more intent on `utility’ maximisation and despite a huge increase in revenues over the last 15 years the football industry remains financially unstable (Deloitte 2008; PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2007). In fact clubs are effectively regarded as social and cultural institutions by their supporters – their key community or stakeholder This raises the question: if football clubs are effectively not-for-profit institutions then would it not be more appropriate to structure them as such, as explicitly not- for-profit community benefit mutually owned organisations controlled by their supporters? Scottish Football Finance A review of the recent financial history of the Scottish Premier League is chastening reading for anyone who believes that Scottish football operates according to the profit-maximising principles of market economic theory. Following combined pre-tax losses by the twelve SPL clubs of -£63m in 2001/2002, -£53m in 2002/2003, and -£14m in 2003/2004, the combined SPL clubs made their first ever combined profit in 2004/05 (£3m) since the league’s inception in the 1997/98 season.
