A Welcome Celebration June admission ceremony one of the largest we have ever had.

182 new Fellows, Members and Associates were welcomed to the College at our June Admission Ceremony. We were delighted to welcome many of our new members, who travelled to Glasgow from different parts of the world, to the College building on the morning of the Ceremony. For those who had not visited the College before, soaking up the history that they are now a part of was a particularly rewarding experience. The ceremony itself was held at the Bute Hall in the University of Glasgow and followed by the Welcome Dinner in College Hall. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a wonderful opportunity for our Fellows and Members, new and old, to meet face-to-face and celebrate this important milestone in their careers. New members were welcomed to the College A Welcome Dinner The next admission ceremony will be held on Wednesday 14 November 2012. It will be followed by the Welcome Dinner, hosted by the President. Scientific studies have shown no real improvement in glycaemic control, but an increase in physical and psychological wellbeing, leading to an improved quality of life. At a recent meeting of the Strathclyde Diabetes Group, held in the College, a former professional cyclist with type 1 diabetes showed that people with type 1 diabetes can compete at the highest levels of sport. Vice-President (Medical) Miles Fisher FRCP(Glasg) reports.

Kyle Jacques Rose was diagnosed as having type 1 diabetes at the age of 16. He was unable to accept a scholarship in Japan as a teenager to represent the United States because his care providers at the time were too concerned about his recently diagnosed diabetes. Fortunately for him, this was the last event he would miss.

Sports were already an important part of his life and diabetes did not change that. If anything, it gave him more motivation. He was fortunate to make contact with a group of like-minded individuals who were running an amateur cycling team at the time called “Team Type 1”. After competing in amateur events in the US, the team turned professional in 2008. Early success included qualification for the Race Across America, a continuous relay race of 3,000 miles.

Since Team Type 1’s first participation in the Race Across America in 2005, the team has won the race four times and currently holds the Race Across America record for the fastest trans-continental crossing in just 5 days, 9 hours and 5 minutes. The caloric expenditure for certain riders on the team reached 8,000 calories per day during this event. He did, however, gymnastics text. very much approve of walking, be it walking to and fro to stimulate intellectual discussion or more vigorous walking to aid digestion or Girolamo Mercuriale, an Italian physician of considerable learning, work up an appetite. published a work on gymnastics entitled De Arte Gymnastica in 1569.
