4 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 33 “I’m not going to try to paper over the cracks here; some of our defending during the first half last week was totally unacceptable. ”

£Our 1.00promising start to the league campaign was basically ruined by the defeat to Ashfield at last week with what I can only describe as a very frustrating performance. It’s ironic because when we lost Darian MacKinnon, Adam Stra- chan and Stevie Dymock, there were suggestions that a lack of firepower might be our biggest problem.

I was (and still am) confident we can still create chances but our consistency at the other end was (and still is) more a con- cern for me. I’m not going to try to paper over the cracks here; some of our defending during the first half last week was totally unacceptable. It was like watching schoolboy football and if we are going to defend like that we could be in for a long hard season. Along with my backroom team, I will let the dust settle, have a good think about what went wrong and then try to address the problem but to be honest, I also think some players really have to stand up and be counted now. They have to accept more responsibility and start living up to the reputations that have been bestowed upon them. I’m hoping they feel the same as I did and their pride was seriously hurt.

We have a generally young squad but it isn’t always the inexperienced players that let us down. What anyone done last season or any previous season is totally irrelevant now. Reputations from the past mean little to me; it’s this seasons results and how we perform now that matter. Anyone who wants a place in this team will have to achieve it on merit! We will also continue to look to improve the squad and that would happen even if we were winning every game, as we should always have a continual improvement policy! Tommy Martin should return to the squad for this game.

Today we welcome the current league champions, Irvine Meadow to Holm Park. I will be looking for a reaction from our players after last week and despite the fact we face possibly the strongest, most expensive and most experienced squad in junior football, I have no doubt we are capable of getting a result from this game if we play as well as we can. Last season’s performance against the Medda at Holm Park was one of the high- lights of the season for me and I’ll be asking the players to match that today. Can I ask you to give the players as much vocal backing as possible in order to help them achieve three points from this fixture.

Onwards & upwards.

Billy McGhie.

Clydebank FC

Running a semi‐professional team can be an expensive business ‐ especially one in the top league of the Juniors. Some teams have input from monied investors, a social club or are perhaps resourced from the sale of assets. Clydebank FC don't have access to any of these income sources ... but we do have the backing of a loyal support ‐ the 12th man.

The Bankies have recently launched a scheme to allow fans to commit a regular sum towards maintaining the club's budget and to help to build on our successful 1st season in the Super Premier ‐ where we punched above our weight. The scheme is called the 100 Club ‐ and that's what we're looking for people to commit to ‐ a minimum of £100 per season. That's £8.33 a month or around £1.92 a week.

If you feel you can sign up to this ‐ or have friends or family that wish to support the club ( or perhaps in memory of a loved one ) ‐ then here's how to do it.

Set up a standing order at the bank ( preferred method ) ‐ Sort Code : 83‐17‐10 Acc No : 00658141

Acc Name : CLYDEBANK FC Ref : 100 ‐ < put your name in here >

Pay cash or a cheque made payable to CLYDEBANK FC ‐ send to 3 McLaren Crescent, Glasgow G20 0LD or see Club Director Bill Abraham at a game

If you are seng up a standing order or sending a cheque then please let us know that you're doing so ‐ by mailing [email protected]. This is also the address if you want more detail.

In return for your input you will receive an exclusive enamel badge and be put into a draw for a matchworn jersey at the end of the season. You will also be listed on this page in the matchday programme ‐ unless you'd prefer not to be.

The money will be put to good use and will help us to compete at the highest level.

26 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 11 Todays Visitors - Irvine Meadow X1 Player Of The Week

Tommy Martin - Tommy has started the season in great form and is the first winner of the new Player of the month award sponsored by Clydebank Co-op. This afternoon Premier Division champions Irvine Meadow visit Holm Park in the first of the scheduled two meetings of the sides this season. Last term the Ayrshire side came looking for the points to help seal the title but left empty handed after a sparkling display from Bankies on a warm Monday evening in May. He will be presented with the trophy before today's match. Medda began their season in group two of the Ayrshire sectional league cup in the company of Ardeer Thistle, Darvel, Hurlford United, Irvine Vics and Kilbirnie Ladeside. In just over two seasons he has made over sixty appearances and scored a few The Premier Division side was expected to fill one of the top two places with only Kilbirnie or Hurlford expected to provide any stern tests. The Meadow Park side started with two home wins over Darvel and Vics and followed this up with a win over Hurlford, an away game that was switched to Irvine. A share of the spoils at Kilbirnie left good goals into the bargain. them with what appeared a straight forward home tie with Ardeer to wrap up the section but a narrow 1-0 win allowed Kilbirnie to win the group on goal difference as both sides qualified for the quarter final stage. Lying in wait were group one winners Beith but a trip to Bellsdale Park held no fears as Meadow triumphed 4-2 to go into the semi-final. This set them up with another crack at Kilbirnie, again at Valefield where they won 3-2 to reach the final where they will meet Auchinleck Talbot.

Chris Strain’s men began the defence of their league title with a visit from last season’s Scottish Cup winners and newly promoted Shotts Bon Accord. Goals from 2012-13 Career defender Neil McGowan and Richie Barr were enough to take the three points in a 2-1 win for the home side. Meadow and Shotts both missed out on a fixture in week SLC WSP WSC SJC CLC ETC Totals Career two of the season but last weekend Meadow were back in action when Arthurlie were the visitors. A 2-1 win for the home side saw Medda rise to third in the table. App A S G A S G A S G A S G A S G A S G A S G A S Gls The reason both Shotts and Irvine Meadow missed out on a league fixture was because both were representing the juniors in the senior Scottish Cup that weekend. s Medda had a first round home fixture against East of Scotland side Gala Fairydean who the despatched without any fuss by winning 4-0. Many junior fans have ben Mark Hailstones 1 1 1 2 1 241 59 300 64 hopeful that one day a junior side would progress well enough in the senior Scottish Cup to one day play at itself. There are a few well known faces in the Medda side as far as Clydebank fans are concerned. The older generation will remember Neil McGowan featuring for Bankies in Ross Campbell 3 1 4 113 4 117 8 the senior leagues but former Partick Thistle loan signing Kieran Burns and Adam Strachan have both made the switch to join the Ayrshiremen during the summer. Gordon Moffat 1 2 3 60 2 62 9 Last weekend Bankies suffered their first league defeat since that 2-0 loss at Auchinleck away back in January, an incredible ten game run of nine wins and a draw. A Tommy Martin 3 1 1 2 5 1 1 55 7 62 5 fortnight ago the nine game winning streak was stopped with that draw here against Petershill and last weekend was the first time Bankies had left the field without gaining any points from a league match over that period. That run from January was actually thirteen successive wins in all competitions, a club record, until the Evening Ross McPherson 2 2 2 2 2 4 2 3 33 29 62 18 Times Cup meeting with today’s visitors at Meadow Park when Medda won by the odd goal in five on their way to the final. Robert Hamilton 4 2 6 38 38 This is only the fifth meeting between these two sides with the series tied at two wins apiece. The first time the sides clashed was back in February 2008 when they were drawn together in a West of Scotland Cup tie at Glenhead Park. Clydebank were a division below Meadow and were not expected to progress to the next round but Andy Paterson 4 1 5 38 38 shocked their visitors by winning 3-2. It took a few more seasons for Bankies to get into the top flight so the next meeting of the sides was a league meeting at Meadow Michael MacAdam 2 1 1 2 2 20 11 31 1 Park last September where the Ayrshire side turned on the style to beat Clydebank 2-1. Bankies gained revenge for that defeat in the return fixture in May by winning 3-1 thanks in no small part to a Darian MacKinnon hat-trick. Last season after three league matches Bankies were seventh in the table having just beaten Pollok to get their first points on the board. The goals against Results 1st September Calum Hardie Beith 2 column showed eight conceded from three games but this was countered by scoring seven times. Conceding three in one game and four in another had Clydebank fans a little worried as to how the season would pan out. 24 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 13 Former Bankies– Stevie Woods

Stephen Woods was born on February 23rd 1970 in Glasgow and as youth played with Kilpatrick BC.

He joined Hibernian as a YTS and left there in February 1992 to join up at New Kilbowie Park, making his debut in a 2-1 midweek home victory over Stirling Albion. Woods was in and out of the side for the rest of the season, making five appearances with one clean sheet and was rested for the final day of the season when Jim Gallagher retired from first team duty, with Stirling Albion again the opponents, this time in a 2-0 defeat on the final match on Annfield’s plastic pitch. Willie Spence had started the season as number one, being replaced by the legendary Gal in early February.

The next season saw Willie Spence back in goals but conceding eight in two away games to newly promoted Cowdenbeath (3-3) and Greenock Morton(1-5) saw Woodsy restored to number one and Spence soon moved onto Ayr United. Woods played in every game from then on and was instrumental in the Scottish Cup run which took us to a quarter final replay with Aberdeen. Stevie had a cracker of a performance in a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie and despite the 4-3 loss in a rain lashed midweek Kilbowie replay in front of 8000, many left talking about the keeper’s performance.

On the field, it was a poor season, cup run aside. Bankies finished 8th of 12, thirteen points clear of relegation. Twelve clean sheets were attained from the forty nine matches Woods played. Clydebank departed both the League Cup and B&Q Cup at the first round. The Scottish had its highlights, a 0-0 draw away to now defunct but then Premier Division side Airdrieonians, saw them overcome in a 2-0 midweek replay before East Stirlingshire were beaten 2-1 at to setup the Aberdeen ties. 2 -0 down early on, Bankies got back into it with goals from Ken Eadie, John Maher(honest!) and Craig Flannigan, coupled with a number of stops from Woods in goal, however was to undo Clydebank hopes with two late goals to end the Cup dream.

The following season(93-94) saw Woods up against young recruit Alan Monaghan from Rutherglen Glencairn but he retained the no.1 spot as Bankies started the season emphatically. The first seven league games were all won and only a blip in crashing out the League Cup to Aberdeen(again) at Pittodrie was the only downside. Four clean sheets were picked up in those seven matches before a poor defeat to bottom of the table Brechin City. Woods had only signed month to month contracts and there was interest in him from a few clubs.

Clydebank only won one of the next three games including Brechin before Woods dropped the bombshell that he was leaving and moved onto Preston North End just a day before St. Mirren were due to arrive at New Kilbowie Park for a Division One game, Alan Monaghan took the jersey and made it his own for the rest of the season. As in his first season, Woods made eleven appearances before the move south, keeping five clean sheets.

Stephen spent one season at Deepdale making 20 appearances for the Lancashire side before returning north to join Motherwell for the 1994-95 season. He spent nine years at , vying with guys like Sieb Dykstra and Andy Goram for the starting spot and made 143 appearances(Wiki figures) for the Lanarkshire outfit. One early appearance for the ‘Well was as a substitute at New Kilbowie were the sides battled a 1-1 draw in the Coca Cola Cup. Joe Robertson scored the Bankies goal as the SPL side scraped through on penalties. However many left talking about Woods’ appearance form the bench as a STRIKER following injuries to players in the day of only three listed substitutes.

From Fir Park the next port of call was Paisley, joining St. Mirren in 2003 and making nine appearances in his two years at . 2005-06 was spent at Almondvale with Livingston though he failed to feature according to the Wiki resources, it is understood he made his first steps into coaching there.

The next move was Dunfermline Athletic as goalkeeping coach in 2006, and a year later he joined the coaching staff at Celtic, promoted to the role of first team goalkeep- ing coach in 2009, a role he still holds under at .

In 2009 he undertook a trek to Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for The Anthony Nolan Trust which is a charity focusing on leukaemia and bone marrow transplant. He is a long supporter of the trust and first got involved when he met another cancer sufferer (Johanna MacVicar) while working at Motherwell FC in 2005. He does this as "I can help spread the message and encourage others to support the charity's work" and since the death of , it has given him an extra incentive to complete this trek.
