However to be fair to our players, the reaction from that bad start was very pleasing. Our guys rolled up their sleeves after that setback and not only got a goal back, but could have snatched a winner in the later stages of the game. Considering the Springburn clubs recent form and league position, I have to be satisfied with the point. It was also important to produce a good showing after the disappointment of the previous week when we went out the West of Scotland Cup to Arthurlie. We know we face a tough task if we are to close the gap on Petershill and Auchinleck Talbot in the league challenge but we won’t concede defeat until it is mathematically impossible. We will continue to work hard at improv- ing the team and I have stated clearly to our players that if we are serious about progressing again as a team we really need to stop conceding so many goals like the ones we have lost in the past couple of games. On an upbeat note, I thought the players showed great desire and tremendous fighting spirit in their performance and as manager I have to take that as a real positive. We will of course face Petershill once more this season as they have been drawn to visit us as we attempt to retain our hold of the Central Cup. Today we welcome Scottish Cup holders Shotts to Holm Park on league business. They have not gathered as many points as they would have hoped for this season on their return to the top flight but I have no doubts that on their day they are a side capable of causing any team problems and we have to be aware of that. We will have to turn in a good performance if we are to gain our first victory of 2013. It would also be good to give our supporters a welcome lift as we approach the second part of the season. Scott Walker will be available again for selection but Joe Andrew could miss out with an ankle injury which he picked up against Arthurlie. Please give the lads as much vocal backing as possible in our attempt to put another three points on the board. Onwards & upwards. Billy McGhie. • The People's Game and Community Ownership of Football Clubs
The People’s Game and Community Ownership of Football Clubs: A Mutual Solution to a Market Problem Sean Hamil, School of Management, Birkbeck College, University of London Stephen Morrow, Department of Sports Studies, The University of Stirling Football clubs are ostensibly uncomplicated organisations: they exist to facilitate participation in, and the spectating of, organised football. But beyond this plain statement there is a complex and contested debate about the objectives and purpose of these clubs. In England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland most football clubs are constituted as private limited companies with private shareholders. Yet they rarely make a profit their owners seeming more intent on `utility’ maximisation and despite a huge increase in revenues over the last 15 years the football industry remains financially unstable (Deloitte 2008; PriceWaterhouseCoopers, 2007). In fact clubs are effectively regarded as social and cultural institutions by their supporters – their key community or stakeholder This raises the question: if football clubs are effectively not-for-profit institutions then would it not be more appropriate to structure them as such, as explicitly not- for-profit community benefit mutually owned organisations controlled by their supporters? Scottish Football Finance A review of the recent financial history of the Scottish Premier League is chastening reading for anyone who believes that Scottish football operates according to the profit-maximising principles of market economic theory. Following combined pre-tax losses by the twelve SPL clubs of -£63m in 2001/2002, -£53m in 2002/2003, and -£14m in 2003/2004, the combined SPL clubs made their first ever combined profit in 2004/05 (£3m) since the league’s inception in the 1997/98 season.
