Ryan Bauer welcomed everyone to the annual Police Dogs and Hot Dogs event last Monday in the Cedar City Main Street Park.. It was sponsored by the Iron County Friends of Police K9, a group dedicated to helping provide continuing care for police dogs when they retire from active duty. When a police K9 dog retires their handlers normally pay for their after-service care, which includes medical and nutritional costs—which can be quite expensive. Through this fun fundraiser, the Friends can help pay for that care. “We want them to have a good, safe and comfortable retirement,” expressed Sgt. And from the day I took my oath of office, I have been consistent on this issue. Under Presidents Obama and Trump, and now under President Biden, I always advocated for more responsible spending. Sadly, despite the warning signs, we continue to recklessly spend taxpayer money. This behavior will not just burden our children and grandchildren with excessive public debt, either. This problem is immediate, and the bill is coming due. It is Congress’ duty to put the budget on path to balance, control the debt, and subsequently allow economic growth. EventLantern provides uplifting lights Festival for community after floods

by Corey Baumgartner Iron County Today Last Saturday evening in Cedar City, near the mystical land of Kumandra, hundreds of small bright lights made their way slowly across the Lake at the Hills. Some of the floating lanterns had words of encouragement written on them. With or without words, each was a wish, a prayer, or just a magical thing to do on a beautiful summer’s evening. After the launching of the lanterns, the movie Raya and the Last Dragon was shown in the parking lot near the lake. The event helped uplift and bring the community together in a positive #cedarcitytogether and help spread the way after the challenges with the recent word about unity in our community. flooding. Throughout the evening, people Share your pics of the festival using: were encouraged to share their lantern #cedarcitytogether and on Facebook @ lighting and launching photos using cedarcityevents.

1st birthday Nixon & Knox Lunt Nixon and Knox Lunt, twin boys of Korby and Nicole Lunt, celebrated their first birthday on August 15, 2021. They are such fun and happy babies and we are so lucky to have them in our family. Nixon likes to clap, and he throws everything. Knox loves his binky and thinks it's funny when we brush his teeth. They both love food, baths, getting into everything, and being outside. They especially love their two older broth- ers, McKoy and Kash, even if they get thrown around a little bit. Nixon and Knox are the grandsons of Eric and Brenda Schmutz and Rick and Rochelle Lunt. Their great grandmas are Betty Stones and Deanna Heap. Happy first birthday little buds, we all love you so much!

With the rapidly shifting retail and consumer habits, it is imperative that communities have these critical conversations. It is also critical they find ways to stimulate local entrepreneurship and innovation. It is imperative they find ways to keep a greater percentage of their consumer spending Truly-Local. Additionally, while we will discuss this in future columns, the younger generations have a whole new mindset. This mindset leans toward a more experien- tial economy where it isn’t about sameness, but about making dining and shopping a unique experience. The fastest way to being unique is to avoid the sea of sameness that comes with National chains and embrace the uniqueness of local. This spells Truly- Local in every sense of the meaning. These aren't just nice discussions to have; the economic and vital future of every community under 50,000 is in danger of slowly being dismantled by the winds of economic change. While the answers may vary by community, we can be sure of one thing. Wall Street cares little about our communities unless of course, when it can extract more local dollars that boost their bottom lines. The future of our communities are certainly in our hands, and our hands only. Whether we win or lose tomorrow will be determined by the hard decisions we make today. Hopefully our communities will make those decisions based on long-term growth and not just short-term satisfaction.
