Mentor: Jeff Bailey [email protected] Web Site Link: http://web.pdx.edu/~dillong/popcult/ Course Description and Goals: Critics often associate popular culture with low art because the general public seems to prefer Austin Powers to Artaud and pulp fiction to the classics. The term "popular culture" in fact suggests a contrast with an "unpopular culture," implying that most people actually dislike what is not popular because it is high art. From these assumptions, one can argue that choosing to study popular culture involves a choice to abandon something that is more refined and therefore more worthy of critical attention. In this view, the study of popular culture becomes evidence of the dumbing down of America. Conversely, one can argue that such a claim simply reflects an elitist stance and that embracing popular culture as a topic of scholarship provides evidence of a welcomed move away from elitism. As we choose to study critically aspects of popular culture, we will confront these issues throughout the quarter. This course examines how popular culture, “the cultures of everyday life” (Cultural Theory and Popular Culture: A Reader xi) “offers a common ground”, “is an arena of consent and resistance” (xi) and possibly is “the most visible and pervasive level in a given society” (Petracca and Sorapure, Common Culture, p. -
Documentary Filming Process
Documentary Filming Process The process of planning an investigation using documentary film as research incorporates traditional methods used in qualitative investigations to collect and analyze data. The documentary filming process involves all the essential elements of a qualitative investigation namely: 1)site selection – where to film, how to position the camera and microphone; 2) participant selection- who to film and obtaining consent using a consent form or media release form; 3) data collection - recording audio and video using equipment, designing protocols for interviews and observations during filming; 4) data analysis - reviewing and selecting video and audio clips during editing; 5) findings, discussion and recommendations-making meaning of the video clips and context by sequencing selected clips, adding other audio visual elements; and finally, 6) sharing results-disseminating the results through documentary film. Camera setup An important consideration for filming is determining if the filming location will be outdoors or indoors. Filming outdoors will require taking into consideration the need for lighting and determine what times the footage can be gathered. Outdoors filming is also used when the local context needs to be captured on camera. The next consideration is the camera setup. Use of a tripod helps avoid unnecessary movement except in cases where a larger area has to be spanned to show the local environment and context. The researcher also needs to make a decision on the positioning of the camera. Video shots can be taken with the camera pointed at the participant with the researcher filming from behind the camera or taken from other angles. The decision is based both on the aesthetic sensibilities of the researcher as well as what the focus of research is. -

On the one hand it discusses the history of the This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the travelogue genre while drawing a parallel with a Bazanian teleology of cinematic realism. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling. -

FILM 210 - Introduction to Film (4 Hours) The non-fiction classification is indeed a wide one—encompassing An introduction to the study of film that teaches the critical tools educational, experimental formalist filmmaking and the rhetorical necessary for the analysis and interpretation of the medium. ABOUT STREZOV SAMPLING STREZOV SAMPLING © is a division of STREZOV MUSIC PRODUCTIONS LTD – a company created by George Strezov – orchestrator, composer and orchestra/choir contractor in Sofia, Bulgaria. ABOUT THUNDER X3M THUNDER X3M is a product that took all three previous editions of our epic percussion range and brought new live to the sample material by implementing an exciting and powerful engine that allows the user to manipulate the sample material. This, along with a fresh and unique new sample content, opens vast musical possibilities for the working composer. The concept behind all Thunder series was to create unique instrument combinations – on-set mixture between timpani and toms, between Bulgarian tupans and snare drums. The series were held in high regard and we continued to experiment with Thunder 2 and 3, introducing a large 15-man percussion ensemble for the third version. The reason we went back to the scripting is simple – we were not happy with the library, it didn't live to its full potential. As working composers ourselves we needed features that will optimize our workflow – pitch control of the percussion and transient controlls to name a few. The new sample content not only has ensemble patches, but also tons of solo percussion – excellent for giving your rhythms definition. Our main idea was to record epic film percussion. The library has multiple dynamic levels (from very soft ppp to blasting ffff) and has multiple round-robins (meaning that each instrument has unique samples that get changed everytime you press a key). DISCLAIMER / PHILOSOPHY We would like to note that, in our pursuit for more lively and natural samples, we tend to avoid a few things that are considered commonplace. -

SUÁREZ The Gryphon group has had an uneven reception history: well-known and well-regarded in experimental film circles during its active years—the mid- 1940s to the late 1960s—it suffered an eclipse in succeeding decades and now seems poised for a return, as recent publications, conferences, and film programs begin to assess Gryphon’s place in the history of avant-garde cinema. The group’s core members were Marie Menken and her husband, Willard Maas. Among those who worked under the Gryphon imprint are Ben Moore, Charles Boultenhouse, John Hawkins, and Charles Henri Ford. And on the outer edges of the collective were Gregory Markopoulos and Stan Brakhage. Maas claimed them as members and they allowed their work to be connected with the group but did not feel strongly committed to it. 1 The list of Gryphon’s friends and collaborators makes up an impressive cross-section of the postwar avant-garde, and includes filmmakers Norman McLaren, Maya Deren, Kenneth Anger, and Andy Warhol, poet and film - maker Gerard Malanga, critic Parker Tyler, Living Theater founders and directors Julian Beck and Judith Malina, the British poet George Barker— a protégé of T.S. -

The Brakhage Center Symposium 2012 Quickly becoming a tradition in the world of avant-garde filmmaking and artistry, the Brakhage Center Symposium will again be hosted this year by the University of Colorado at Boulder. In a weekend dedicated to the exploration of new ideas in cinema art, guest programmer Kathy Geritz explores Experimental Narrative. [Blake] cried again and again that everything that lives is holy, and that nothing is unholy except things that do not live—lethar- gies, and cruelties, and timidities, and that denial of imagination which is the root that grew from in old times. Passions, because most living, are most holy . and man shall enter eternity borne upon their wings. He was a man crying out for a mythology, and trying to make one because he could not find one at hand. Stan Brakhage’s realization of that mythopoeic project, which P. Adams Sitney, in his pathbreaking studies of American independent production, identified early on as central to his work, required nothing less than a radical revision of the conditions of cinematic representation and the rejection, in practice, of its codes. This, as I have argued both in these pages and elsewhere, entailed both a redefinition of the space of cinematic representation (the shift, grosso modo, from a haptic mode to the optical) and the institution, through speed and fluidity of editing, of a new temporality: that of a continuous present in which spectatorial memory and anticipation were modified or eliminated. -

Unquestionably the most important living avant-garde filmmaker, Brakhage single-handedly transformed the schism separating the avant-garde from classical filmmaking into a chasm. And the ultimate consequences have yet to be resolved; his films appear nearly as radical today as the day he made them. Brakhage was born in 1933, and made his first film, Interim (1952), at 19. Notably prolific, he has completed several films most years since. To date, his filmography lists over 300 titles, ranging in length from a few seconds to several hours. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, attended high school in Central City, Colorado. He briefly attended Dartmouth College then left for San Francisco, where he enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute). He had hoped to study under Sidney Peterson., but unfortunately, Peterson had left the school and the film program was no more, so Brakhage moved on. Like Deren, Brakhage came to understand film through poetry, and his earliest films do resemble those of Deren and her contemporaries. The early American avant-garde filmmakers tended to borrow liberally from the German Expressionists and Surrealists: mannered acting, symbolism/non sequitur, non-naturalistic lighting and psychosexual themes were common.
