Used as a noun in English, it designates someone who as easily emanates cachet as pre- tension, of the sort often associated with style items or fashion habits imported from France. As an adjective, however, “cinéphile” describes a state of mind and an emotion that, one the whole, has been seductive to a happy few while proving beneficial to film culture in general. The term “cinephilia,” finally, re- verberates with nostalgia and dedication, with longings and discrimination, and it evokes, at least to my generation, more than a passion for going to the movies, and only a little less than an entire attitude toward life. -

This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions. -

Documentary Filming Process The process of planning an investigation using documentary film as research incorporates traditional methods used in qualitative investigations to collect and analyze data. The documentary filming process involves all the essential elements of a qualitative investigation namely: 1)site selection – where to film, how to position the camera and microphone; 2) participant selection- who to film and obtaining consent using a consent form or media release form; 3) data collection - recording audio and video using equipment, designing protocols for interviews and observations during filming; 4) data analysis - reviewing and selecting video and audio clips during editing; 5) findings, discussion and recommendations-making meaning of the video clips and context by sequencing selected clips, adding other audio visual elements; and finally, 6) sharing results-disseminating the results through documentary film. Camera setup An important consideration for filming is determining if the filming location will be outdoors or indoors. Filming outdoors will require taking into consideration the need for lighting and determine what times the footage can be gathered. Outdoors filming is also used when the local context needs to be captured on camera. The next consideration is the camera setup. Use of a tripod helps avoid unnecessary movement except in cases where a larger area has to be spanned to show the local environment and context. The researcher also needs to make a decision on the positioning of the camera. Video shots can be taken with the camera pointed at the participant with the researcher filming from behind the camera or taken from other angles. The decision is based both on the aesthetic sensibilities of the researcher as well as what the focus of research is. -

It was an activity of his nature.—KARL MARX ork on this collection of texts began some three years ago, when we hoped to publish it in 2003 to celebrate Stan Brakhage’s Wseventieth birthday. Instead, belatedly, it mourns his death. The baby who would become James Stanley Brakhage was born on 14 January 1933 in an orphanage in Kansas City, Missouri.1 He was adopted and named by a young couple, Ludwig, a college teacher of business, and his wife, Clara, who had herself been raised by a stepmother. The family moved from town to town in the Middle West and, sensitive to the stresses of his parents’ unhappy marriage, Stanley was a sickly child, asthmatic and over- weight. His mother took a lover, eventually leaving her husband, who sub- sequently came to terms with his homosexuality and also himself took a lover. In 1941, mother and son found themselves alone in Denver. Put in a boys’ home, the child picked up the habits of a petty criminal, but before his delinquency became serious, he was placed with a stable, middle-class family in which he began to discover his gifts. He excelled in writing and dramatics and in singing, becoming one of the leading voices in the choir of the Cathedral of St. John’s in Denver. Retrieving her now-teenaged son, his mother tried to make a musician of him, but Stanley resisted his tutors, even attempting to strangle his voice teacher. -

On the one hand it discusses the history of the This paper draws two lines of analysis. On the one hand it discusses the history of the travelogue genre while drawing a parallel with a Bazanian teleology of cinematic realism. On the other, it incorporates phenomenological approaches with neuroscience’s discovery of mirror neurons and an embodied simulation mechanism in order to reflect upon the techniques and cinematic styles of the travelogue genre. In this article I discuss the travelogue film genre through a phenomenological approach to film studies. First I trace the history of the travelogue film by distinguishing three main categories, each one ascribed to a particular form of realism. The hyper-realistic travelogue, which is related to a perceptual form of realism; the first person travelogue, associated with realism as authenticity; and the travelogue as a traditional documentary which is related to a factual form of realism. I then discuss how these categories relate to Andre Bazin’s ideas on realism through notions such as montage, duration, the long take and his "myth of total cinema". I discuss the concept of perceptual realism as a key style in the travelogue genre evident in the use of extra-filmic technologies which have attempted to bring the spectator’s body closer into an immersion into filmic space by simulating the physical and sensorial experience of travelling. -

ÉDITO Alain Rousset, Président du Festival 2015 et 2016 resteront deux années à part pour notre festival. En novembre dernier, suite aux attentats perpétrés avant la 26° édition, nous avons pris la décision de reporter notre manifestation. Ne pas céder sur nos principes : à savoir qu’un lieu de culture, de savoir et de dialogue comme le Festival ne saurait s’éteindre face à la peur. Ainsi, après « Un si Proche-Orient, » c’est le thème « Culture et liberté » qui s’impose comme une réponse fédératrice et constructive au climat anxiogène. Comme un lien emblématique entre les deux éditions de 2016, c’est Chahdortt Djavann, femme de conviction, écrivain française d’origine iranienne, qui nous parlera de culture au pluriel et de liberté à partir de son expérience singulière. Et nous sommes fiers de présenter le film posthume d’Andrezj Wajda qui dans « Afterimage » revient sur les persécutions subies par les artistes de l’autre côté du rideau de fer. De Khomeyni aux djihadistes, de Staline à Hitler, les régimes totalitaires n’ont eu de cesse d’anéantir la culture ou de l’instrumentaliser. Car l’expression artistique est une forme de liberté qui peut remettre en cause un pouvoir politique, religieux ou économique. Le premier enjeu de cette édition est de raconter et d’expliquer comment les artistes, les écrivains ont participé à l’Histoire. Comment, grâce à leur indépendance, à leur génie, ils ont pu éclairer, enchanter leur époque, briser les conformismes. Quelles ont été leurs géniales intuitions, leurs héroïques résistances ou leurs compromissions, leurs aveuglements. Le second enjeu est de montrer comment la culture peut rassembler, éveiller, émerveiller. -

(November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries. -
Introduction in FOCUS: Cinephilia
IN FOCUS: Cinephilia Introduction edited by MARK BETZ s was the case for authorship around 1990, in the last decade the tide has turned for cinephilia. Raised from the critical doldrums in which it had drifted since the 1970s, it has in the new mil- A lenium gathered momentum in the form of an outpouring of published essays, special journal issues, and book-length collections (as well as a singly authored monograph) devoted to its numerous mani- festations and implications. As some of the contributions in this dossier indicate, it was Susan Sontag’s 1996 New York Times Magazine lament for the bygone days of cinephilia, “The Decay of Cinema,” which sparked the powder keg—buried, not forgotten, unearthed anew—for critical work on what might be termed the new cinephilia. Much of this work proceeds from and along the faultlines that have divided aca- demic fi lm studies proper from the more broadly based fi lm culture which partly gave rise to the discipline in the fi rst place. And it is along precisely these faultlines that cinephilia’s future must be envisioned. I consider this in-between-ness to be a good thing: cinephilia may be understood as something of an irritant to certain entrenched con- ceptions about what academic study proper is, what it might concern itself with, how it should carry out its procedures—and this is very much the spirit of George Toles’s piece which concludes this dossier. It also fl ies in the face of the “death of cinema” doom-mongering that came into vogue around the time of Sontag’s article and that fi xated on how new digital media are effecting a fundamental break in the history of the medium.
