Abstract The thesis deals with occurrence and function of pragmatic markers in newspaper articles. The analysis is focused on 30 newspaper articles, which were published on the front page of the British newspapers The Guardian and The Independent. Discourse markers are examined in direct and indirect speech. The analysis is based on pragmatic research. The second chapter deals with introducing the terminology, which is important for understanding the thesis. Then, the newspaper environment is described - the attention is paid to background knowledge of newspaper articles and last but not least to the journalists. The term ―pragmatic marker‖ is observed. Individual pragmatic markers are examined from the quantitative as well as qualitative approach in direct and indirect speech. The results of the analysis are summarised in the last chapter. Anotace Diplomová práce se zabývá výskytem a funkcí pragmatických markerů v ţánru novinových článků. Analýza je zaměřena na 30 novinových článků, které byly vytištěny na přední straně britských novin The Guardian a The Independent. Pragmatické markery jsou zkoumány v přímé i nepřímé řeči. Práce je zaloţena na pragmatickém výzkumu. Druhá kapitola se zabývá terminologií, která je důleţitá pro pochopení celé studie. Dále práce popisuje prostředí novin – pozornost je zaměřena na pozadí novinových článků, jejich části a v neposlední řadě na autory článků. Další kapitola se soustředí na pojem „pragmatický marker―. Následuje rozbor jednotlivých pragmatických markerů jak z kvantitativního tak z kvalitativního hlediska v přímé i nepřímé řeči. Výsledky výzkumu jsou shrnuty v poslední kapitole. Tfjis paper argues that one of tbese internal contradictions' is tbe political communications process and it can be sufficiently serious to undermine the democratic system—but such an undermining is not inevitable. Tbe problem can be described as follows: Democratic systems require tbat citizens are kept fully informed by governments (and others) iti the interests of transparency and ultimately accountability. But there was no bunting or cheering crowds. Instead, both candidates for the US Presidency made their announcements in a manner inconceivable just a few years ago: they released videos on their websites.” Politics, Policy and Television and radio transformed the way politics operated in the twentieth century. And, predicts the Internet Robert Colvile, the internet could do the same in the twenty-first. Yet the main British political parties are failing to exploit its potential. The BNP website has the ROBERT COLVILE same market share as all of the other major political parties combined. The internet will bring a far greater openness to politics, helping the activist and the citizen hold politicians to account. The web could also re-empower MPs, by linking them far more directly to the concerns of their constituents. And for policy development, the internet will revolutionise the way policy-making works. The most subtle, but perhaps most powerful, change, may be to the public’s mindset. As we grow used to the instant availability of information online, we will no longer tolerate delay and obfuscation in getting similar information from government. The individual, and not the state, will be the master in the digital age. The key research questions examined are why the blogs were established, what topics they cover and particularly whether they are critical of the parties, how popular they are and who uses them audiences and how far party and blogs link together to form coherent online networks. The role of political context is examined by conducting our analyses at two time points: May and October/November 2010. Our findings show the blogs occupy an important alternative space for party debate with more dissent voiced outside elections and less connectivity to party sites in evidence. Overall, we argue the blogs are ultimately supportive of parties’, offering grassroots opportunities for information gathering and discussion that would otherwise be unavailable.
