Accepted 13 February, 2009 A few temperate zone fruit species such as apples, pears, apricots and cherries dominate the fruit production in Eastern Anatolia region in Turkey, while the other species (e.g rose hip, hawthorn, sea buckthorn etc.) are less known. Native species grown in their natural ecosystems could be exploited as new foods, valuable natural compounds and derivatives. In the last few years, interest in the rose hip as a fruit crop has increased considerably due to its nutritive and health promoting values. The study was conducted between 2005 and 2006. Among 5000 natural growing rose hip plants around the Van region were examined and among them 26 genotypes were selected. Thirteen genotypes belong to Rosa canina. The fruit weight, length and width of genotypes were ranged between 1.79 - 4.95 g; 15.28 - 33.83 mm and 13.11 - 19.26 mm, respectively. Soluble solid content ranged from 17.73% (VRS132) to 28.45% (VRS 234). Ascorbic acid levels ranged between 517 to 1032 mg/100 ml. The phenotypically divergent genotypes identified in this study could be of much use in the future breeding program. -

The highest total phenolic content was observed in Rosa canina (96 mg GAE/g DW). Rosa dumalis subsp. boissieri had the highest total fat content (1.85%), followed by Rosa pulverulenta (1.81%) and Rosa canina (1.78%), respec- tively. Nine major fatty acids were determined in rose species and a-linolenic acid was found to be dominant for all species. -

Rosa persica Michx. ex Juss. is an aggressive plant species in Iranian rangelands. Several controlling methods have been suggested to stop its expansion. This study examined the short-term effects of fire, tilling, cutting, and herbicides as a means of controlling Rose persica on the richness, evenness and diversity of R. persica communities in rangelands of Iran. The experiment was arranged using asplit-plot design with fire (burning and control) as main plot and four treatments (cutting, tilling and glyphosate herbicide and control) as subplots based on a completely randomized block designwith four replications over three years (2013-2015) in khosbijan, Iran. The Margalef, Sheldon, and Shannon-Wiener indices were used to assess the species richness, evenness, and diversity, respectively. We found that treatments had a different effect on the plant community composition. Prescribed fire coupled with other treatments had a significant effect on species diversity rather than control (P<0.01). -

Rose Breeding before 1800 in Germany The subject of rose breeding in Western Europe between the Middle Ages and 1800 is particularly fascinating, for this is the period in which we see the beginnings of a development that was to lead to the creation of the many rose varieties that give us so much pleasure today. If we examine this period, several questions arise, among which are: Were roses bred as early as in the Middle Ages or the Baroque period? Who was it, above all in Germany, who sowed rose seeds and selected the best seedlings? Was artificial pollination of roses practised before 1800? A talk of this kind cannot provide exhaustive answers to these wide-ranging questions, but an overview is possible. Follow me now in a search for information, on a journey through four centuries of rose history: Rose Breeding in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque Era A very early indication of rose seed planting in Germany can be found in the „Pelzbuch“ of Gottfried von Franken. “Pelzen” here meant budding or grafting in the widest sense. This manual was published around 1350 in Würzburg and was translated into various languages. The treatise concerns itself above all with viticulture and the grafting of fruit trees. But the text mentions three roses: The White and the Red Field Rose and a white garden rose. Petals of the Field Roses were fermented in order to improve the taste of the wine. Caninae) Hilde Nybom* and Gun Werlemark Balsgård, Department of Plant Breeding, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Fjälkestadsvägen 459, SE29194 Kristianstad, Sweden Abstract: Systematics and Genetics: Medicinal effects of rosehips are attributed mainly to dogroses, i.e. species in Rosa sect. Caninae. These are mostly pentaploid and have a unique meiosis with asymmetrical chromosome distribution. Offspring in reciprocal crosses differ widely since seedlings resemble the seed parent more than the pollen parent. Chemical Contents: Flesh (shells) of rosehips from dogroses contain high levels of antioxidants, mainly polyphenols and ascorbic acid, as well as carotenoids and vitamins B and E. The seeds are rich in polyun- saturated fatty acids and are used for skin treatment and cosmetics. Caninae L., grow wild along roadsides and in disturbed areas in temperate regions, and have also been cultivated in some countries to a lesser extent. However, the newly acquired interest in food products with health-promoting substances may lead to new plantations. Rosehips from dogroses have been shown to contain very high levels of antioxidant compounds, mainly polyphenols, but also carotenoids and the vitamins B, C and E. Several different studies have shown rosehip extract to have anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, anti-diabetic and anti- mutagenic effects. It has also been shown to inhibit certain cancer cell proliferation in vitro.
