A Growing Problem: How global food production is draining the world’s water By Theodora Lonsdale

After oxygen, food and water are the two most fundamental requirements for the existence of life. So what happens when the production of one begins to threaten the security of the other?

he agricultural industry is responsible for T90% of freshwater consumption globally, and 40% of the water it uses is pumped directly from underground, often at unsustainable rates. Nearly 10% of people do not have enough to eat already and global food production will likely have to increase by 50% over the next 30 years in order to meet the demands of a rapidly growing population. This does not bode well for the future of water security given current unsustainable water extraction practices. It's no secret that water is the key ingredient to growing food, but the virtual water that goes into its production is often overlooked. ‘Virtual water’ refers to the total amount of water used in the growth and production of food and accounts aspect that can be tackled.
