1960’s (undisclosed): Javier Hidalgo is born. He will become a feared South American drug lord and head of terrorist organisation Sacred Snakes. He will purchase biological weapons from both Umbrella and the ‘rival company.’ CHARACTER PROFILE: JAVIER HIDALGO *Born: UK. Died: 2002. Height: UK. Weight: UK. B-T: UK. Nationality: S. American. Affiliation: Sacred Snakes. Javier was a South American drug lord in control of the Sacred Snakes crime syndicate who had taken de-facto control over a substantial area of jungle by the Amazon. He ruled the entire area absolutely and the small local government was unable to do anything about his control of the drug trade. The drugs the Sacred Snakes produced had been contaminating surrounding countries, as well as finding their way into America. Javier was amassing a fortune in drug money, building up his own private army, and fortifying his operations. He was a wanted criminal in many countries and also an uncommonly cruel man. The ability to slip through the fingers of justice and gather other criminals is not something an ordinary person could accomplish, but Javier had achieved his goals through the use of violence and strict control over the region. He rewarded those who submitted to him and brutally punished anyone who stood in his way, making harsh examples of anyone who opposed him. He ruled his dominion through fear for many years until he mysteriously disappeared from public view in early 2002. This led the U.S. Government to seek him out and investigate a possible link to Umbrella Corp. Javier’s significant history dates back to his formative years where he learned about the drugs trade as a youth and soon completed his first drug deal when he was a teenager.

Para un mejor análisis del apartado sonoro se ha dividido el estudio del sonido en dos partes: música incidental y sound design, teniendo presente, además, que la línea que divida música y efecto de sonido es cada vez menor.

N.19 (2021) Edited by Simone Arcagni and Adriano D’Aloia ISSN 2280-9481 https://doi.org/10.6092/issn.2280-9481/11922 https://cinergie.unibo.it/ Directorial Style for Interactive Storytelling and the Fallacy of Ownership: The Case of Resident Evil 7 Nicolas Bilchi* Roma Tre University (Italy) Submitted: December 11, 2020 – Revised version: February 23, 2021 Accepted: May 17, 2021 – Published: August 4, 2021 Abstract This article discusses some of the issues affecting storytelling in an immersive and interactive medium such as Virtual Reality. Interactive works which reconfigure their images as three-dimensional environments bearing affordances seems able to convey a proper sense of “spatial presence” – that is, the perceptive and cognitive illusion of being physically immersed in a digital environment, rather than in the material one which actually surrounds the body. However, I will show that VR technology is doomed to produce “breaks in presence”: moments which rise awareness of the mediated nature of the experience, shattering the illusion of presence, and which represent undesirable side-effects for the aesthetics of immersion generally promoted by VR works. In order to do so, I will use the VR game Resident Evil 7 as a case study. First, I will analyse the sophisticated formal solutions employed by the game to create a terrifying illusion of presence, highlighting their connection with cinematic strategies common to the horror genre; then, I will focus on sections of the interactive experience which nonetheless devaluate the effects of these stylistic gears by bringing consciousness about the impalpable and disembodied nature of the virtual body during the (simulated) physical interaction with the environment.

EARLY 1980s UNSPECIFIED: Raymond Vester is born. A mysterious individual who plays his cards close to his chest, he will go on to work for the F.B.C. before getting onto Tricell's payroll as a double agent. CHARACTER PROFILE: RAYMOND VESTER *Born: UK. Died: NA. Height: UK. Weight: UK. B-T: UK. Nationality: American. Affiliation: F.B.C./Tricell Raymond Vester was an enigmatic yet mysterious individual. His true loyalties were unknown but he had a knack for manipulating situations to suit his own needs and it is possible he was an industrial spy similar to Ada Wong for they shared many similarities. He joined the F.B.C. as a rookie agent around 2004 with a strong desire to help people and possessed a firm sense of justice. Later in his career he also joined the ranks of Tricell as well as building up a secret alliance with B.S.A.A. Director Clive R. O’Brian. With ties to so many differing organisations, he was well placed to gather intelligence and influence individuals to achieve his own goals. The most important unanswered question concerning Vester was whether he was always this way or if at some point his head was turned by a particular event that made him change his outlook on life. One such event may have been the Terragrigia Panic of 2004 which was Vester’s first major operation in service of the F.B.C. He was on site for three weeks and worked under the supervision of Parker Luciani amongst others. He was young, naive and eager to please at that time and being involved in such a major bioterrorism incident opened his eyes to what was wrong with the world.

Zombies, Phallic Monsters, and Rocket Launchers: An Examination of Gender Representations and Simulations in the Resident Evil Series Christopher Alton A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Communication and Culture, York University, Toronto, Ontario May, 2020 © Chris Alton, 2020 ii Abstract Capcom’s Resident Evil series (1996-present) is the second longest running horror video game series, following Konami’s Castlevania (1986-present). The series has, from its beginning, offered a choice of gendered protagonists with associated unique narrative and gameplay experiences, to say nothing of the gendered nature of the series antagonists. In this dissertation, I examine how gender dynamics, norms, expectations, and subversions are depicted and represented across the games in the Resident Evil series. I use an approach which embraces presentation (the ways characters are depicted in audio/visual terms), narrative (what roles characters play in the stories), and gameplay aspects (what the player is tasked with in the games, and how they are expected to succeed) of the main games in the Resident Evil series. Using key texts on the ontology of video games, gender/sexuality in the horror genre, and intersectionality/international feminism, I examine the whole of the Resident Evil series, as well as the guides and making-of materials, spin-offs, offshoots, and contemporary reviews. How the choice of male versus female protagonist choice is delineated, paired with the ways in which characters, male, female, and otherwise, are portrayed in relation to one another is the larger focus of this dissertation.
