Cuneiform Artist News, Tours & Websites Fall 2010 CUNEIFORM ARTIST NEWS, TOURS & WEBSITES FALL 2010 ---------------------- INFORMATION ON THE HUGH HOPPER BENEFIT CD, THE GIFT OF PURPOSE FROM NICK DIDKOVSKY I got a message a few months ago from Hugh Hopper's wife Christine. She reported that since Hugh's passing, she's been struggling with finances. Of course she's also struggling emotionally, as she misses him terribly, but the gist of her message was a call for financial help. She recalled that Hugh told her that if she ran into trouble, to ask their friends for help. So she did. In response, John Roulat, Steve Feigenbaum, and I decided to produce a limited edition benefit CD, The Gift Of Purpose. The CD features a live concert by Bone (Didkovsky/Hopper/Roulat) that was beautifully recorded at Orion Sound in Baltimore. There is also a bonus track by myself, John, Colin Marston (Behold....the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice), and Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine, etc). Daevid contributed some very moving vocals which pay tribute to Hugh. John, Steve, and I are splitting the manufacturing costs and donating the gross income to Christine. Steve has already wired her some money in advance. The Gift of Purpose is a Cuneiform release, in digipak format, with cover design by Bill Ellsworth. So it looks and sounds very, very good! For those of you new to Bone, we were a trio that was initiated when Hugh contacted me some years ago suggesting we collaborate on a record. Our record USES WRIST GRAB came out on Cuneiform a few years back, and we figured we were done. However, we were sort of drafted into doing live performance by Bruce Gallanter of Downtown Music Gallery, who invited us to perform at a festival he'd organized. Once we discovered we could pull off this material live, we did a handful of gigs, including the one on this record. We're very proud of the performance we unleashed in Baltimore, and thrilled that we can make it available to all of Hugh's friends through this benefit CD! There's ONLY going to be 500 of these. We are severely limiting radio and review copies, so please do not request one. If you want to play it on your radio show or write about it, please buy one and support Hugh's family directly! 1 I hope you will support this project by purchasing a copy of The Gift of Purpose. The Gift of Purpose will be available through: Wayside Music (www.waysidemusic.com) and Downtown Music Gallery (www.downtownmusicgallery.com) Rock on - Nick Didkovsky ARTIST NEWS: BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC Music by Birdsongs of the Mesozoic is prominently featured in Ken Field's soundtrack for "Twist of Fate", a film by acclaimed animator (and Field's wife) Karen Aqua. The film has been extremely well received internationally, and has been screened at international film & animation festivals in Telluride, Ottawa, Annecy (France), Denver, Hiroshima, Stockholm, and on the Greek island of Kos, where Field & Aqua attended the screening during the first week of September. Michael Bierylo worked with Roger Miller on the music for the documentary Ant Bike Mike, as well as performed solo laptop shows in Berlin Germany. Dance choreographer Margot Parsons will use the Birdsongs' recordings of "Peter Gunn" and "Gravity Theme" for a dance concert at Boston University on the November 19 weekend. The Birds continue to work on new material and are available to perform or give workshops. For inquiries, contact Erik Lindgren at [email protected] CHEER-ACCIDENT Before fall set in, CHEER-ACCIDENT turned into a pop band just in time to release a summery, old-school vinyl single ("Barely Breathing" b/w "Cynical Girl") on the Rampage Recordings label. This foray into unbridled tunefulness will serve as an appetizer-- an anomalous little teaser-- for their upcoming full-length on Cuneiform. And look for CHEER-ACCIDENT in an easterly town near you: 11/11 Ann Arbor, MI 11/12 Cleveland, OH 11/13 Binghamton, NY 11/14 Boston, MA or Montpelier, VT (pending) 11/15 NYC (Cake Shop) 11/16 SUNY Purchase 11/17 Baltimore or DC (pending) 11/18 Richmond, VA (pending) 11/19 Columbia, SC 11/20 ??? 11/21 ??? As always, go to www.CHEER-ACCIDENT.com for any and all updates! DJAM KARET Formed in 1984, the instrumental group Djam Karet has just released their 15th CD titled "The Heavy Soul Sessions". Recorded Live-In-Studio 2 without any overdubs or computer manipulation, this 65 minute CD features six tracks that showcase the band at its fiery best. Recently the band performed a few of their rare live shows, which included music from throughout their long career. This included a few gigs in Los Angeles, and also France where they headlined a 3-day progressive rock concert called The Crescendo Festival. When they got back, they decided to play their tunes again, this time recording them in their own private studio, in order to better capture the group's wailing and aggressive live sound. And so the CD "The Heavy Soul Sessions" was born. Also, a side-group they have called Ukab Maerd has just released their new debut CD "The Waiting Room", filled with 64 minutes of analog and modular synths, electric guitar, and mangled nightmares. This Electronic music group was created by Chuck Oken, jr and Gayle Ellett, and features French Electronic music pioneer Richard Pinhas performing computer-altered guitar loops on 3 of the 4 tracks. A must-have for all fans of Electronic music. Currently, Djam Karet is busy lining up a series of shows throughout Europe for the Summer of 2011. Stay tuned for more updates! 3 You can learn more at these websites: www.DjamKaret.com www.myspace.com/DjamKaret www.facebook.com/Djam.Karet www.twitter.com/DjamKaretMusic www.myspace.com/UkabMaerd DOCTOR NERVE / NICK DIDKOVSKY Doctor Nerve Artist News Doctor Nerve emerged from the recording studio a few weeks ago, having finished tracking five new tunes! This is the first recorded material that welcomes Ben Herrington to the band (Ben is perhaps best known for his magnificent trombone playing in Meridian Arts Ensemble). We're very excited by the music that's gone down "to tape" and look forward to mixing it soon! Doctor Nerve has been invited to the Zappanale & More Festival in Germany for August 2011!!! ( http://www.zappanale.de/ ) Nick Didkovsky and Michael Lytle will be joined by a guest in an improvised trio at Roulette, NYC on Oct 1, 2010. ( http://www.roulette.org/events/event.php/LYTLE ) Nick and John Roulat (Bone) are beyond proud that the Hugh Hopper benefit CD "The Gift of Purpose" will be out any second now on Cuneiform Records. This CD features 40 minutes of a Bone concert, beautifully recorded at Orion Sound in Baltimore, adding a 15 minute bonus track where Nick and John are joined by Daevid Allen on vocals, Yves Duboin on soprano sax (Doctor Nerve), and Colin Marston on Warr Guitar (Behold! The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice, etc) FAR CORNER Far Corner conducted a recording session on Friday the 13th (of August). The date, with its magical or perhaps "bad luck" significance, allowed the group to perform a healthy amount of wrong notes to better transform the tightly composed music into darker creations, now infected by of all kinds of ugly distortions of sound. The session saw the completion of all percussion tracks for album number three, with keys, cello, and bass nearing the end of their recording journey for the album. Bassist William Kopecky was busy recording tracks for the Flyin' Ryan Brothers the same week he recorded for Far Corner. William and Craig, both a part of the dark ambient trio Yeti Rain, finished work mixing their next album. Dan Maske traveled to the state of Georgia in March to perform with the Globe Saxophone Quartet on drumset for his composition "Wind and Weaponry." The group performed at Western Georgia University and the 4 University of Georgia, in Athens, for the North American Saxophone Alliance Convention. Cellist Angela Schmidt has been using her talents to perform and record with The Julie B Well, a progressive rock quintet from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Besides his involvement with Far Corner and Yeti Rain, percussionist Craig Walkner has been performing regularly with Justin Black, an artist based in Austin Texas. It’s only RIO, but I like it. Carrying the torch for these avant Progressive refuseniks are Thinking Plague, part of a stateside Cow-inspired contingent including 5uu’s and Motor Totemist Guild. These groups have…produced some extraordinary work… Their music eschews the salon woodwinds and cellos of the European groups for a more traditional electric palette, and its driving, whirlwind climaxes show a marked influence of King Crimson and Yes, names to make their RIO granddaddies run screaming from the room. …this new album finds the group’s main writer Mike Johnson in [an] apocalyptic mood, layering the pale vocals of Deborah Perry into a huge choir of doom, her exquisitely twisted harmonies spinning tales of war, despair and redemption as the music becomes audaciously, perhaps absurdly, complex. … Thinking Plague are exciting and ridiculous in equal measure, as good Prog rock should be.” - Keith Moliné, Wire, Issue 239, January 2004 “Thinking Plague formed in 1983…after guitarist and main composer Mike Johnson answered a notice posted by Bob Drake for a guitarist into “Henry Cow, Yes, etc.” …these initial influences are still prominent in the group’s sound - along with King Crimson, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Art Bears, and Univers Zero.

In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. BAD 67 ALCHEMY 1 Martin Büsser gewidmet 1968 - 2010 2 WHAT A DIFFERENCE A NIGHT MAKES Ah, Serenade kommt tatsächlich von sereno.
