RESUMO Briozoários são animais aquáticos coloniais, modulares e sésseis que apresentam uma grande diversidade, principalmente no ambiente marinho. Estes organismos podem ser encontrados em diferentes profundidades nos oceanos, ocorrendo desde a zona entre marés até regiões mais profundas como as zonas abissais. No Ceará são conhecidas apenas seis espécies de briozoários marinhos, sendo este número muito inferior quando comparado com outros estados da região Nordeste e menor ainda quando comparado com outras regiões do Brasil, como Sudeste e Sul. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a briozoofauna coletada na plataforma continental do Ceará, levando em consideração aspectos bióticos e abióticos que possam influenciar na presença e ausência desses organismos. O material foi obtido por meio de dragagens realizadas na costa oeste do estado do Ceará ao largo dos municípios de Itarema, Acaraú e Camocim. Também foram obtidas amostras da Bacia Petrolífera do Ceará e foram realizados mergulhos autônomos em diferentes pontos ao largo de Fortaleza. Foram encontrados 51 morfotipos de briozoários provenientes da plataforma continental do estado. Trinta e oito espécies foram identificadas; 12 morfotipos foram identificados até o nível de gênero e apenas um a nível de superfamília. As famílias mais representadas nas amostras foram Adeonidae, Antroporidae, Celleporidae, Lepraliellidae, Membraniporidae, Phidoloporidae e Schizoporellidae. A maioria dos briozoários foi encontrada em profundidades que variaram entre 5 a 39 metros. A forma colonial mais comum foi a forma incrustante, encontradas sobre algas, rodolitos, fragmentos de coral morto, conchas de moluscos e sobre outras colônias de briozoários. Tais substratos foram favoráveis para o desenvolvimento e sobrevivências de muitas colônias. Neste trabalho foram descritos e discutidos taxonomicamente os espécimes encontrados no Ceará, com ênfase na classe Gymnolaemata, ordem Cheilostomata. ABSTRACT Bryozoans are colonial, modular and sessile aquatic animals, which present a great diversity in the marine environment. These organisms can be found at different depths in the oceans, occurring from the intertidal zone to deeper regions such as abyssal zones. Only six species of marine bryozoans are known in Ceará, Brazil, this number being much lower when compared to other states in the Northeast region and even lower when compared to other regions of Brazil, such as Southeast and South. The purpose of this work was to study the bryozoofauna collected in the continental shelf of Ceará, taking into account biotic and abiotic aspects found in the Ceará platform that may influence the presence and absence of these organisms. The samples were obtained through dredging carried out on the west coast of the state of Ceará off the municipalities of Itarema, Acaraú and Camocim. 51 morphotypes of bryozoans were found, coming from the continental shelf of the state. 38 species were identified; 12 morphotypes were identified down to the genus level and only one superfamily level. The families most represented in the samples were Adeonidae, Antroporidae, Celleporidae, Lepraliellidae, Membraniporidae, Phidoloporidae and Schizoporellidae. Most of the bryozoans were found at depths ranging from 5 to 39 meters. In this study, the specimens found in Ceará were described and taxonomically discussed, with emphasis on the Gymnolaemata class, order Cheilostomata. Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract Two new species of cheilostome bryozoans are described from Bahia and Espírito Santo States, Brazil—Calyptooecia conuma n. sp. and Hippotrema fissurata n. sp. Both genera are registered for the first time in the South Atlantic Ocean. Inter alia, Calyptooecia conuma n. sp. is characterized by the presence of dimorphic brooding zooids with relatively small orifices and no perioral tubercles, contrasting with bigger non-brooding zooids having larger orifices surrounded by perioral tubercles. Hippotrema fissurata n. sp. differs from congeners in colony morphology and colour, in details of the ooecium and in zooidal metrics. Specimens were collected on varied substrata, commonly calcareous nodules and shells as well as other bryozoans and sponges. TAYLOR 5 Gero HILLMER 6 Abstract: The bryozoan collection of Prof. Dr Ehrhard VOIGT (1905–2004) at the Senckenberg Re- search Institute in Frankfurt am Main, Germany is a world-renowned collection of great scientific value. It is the world's largest collection of fossil bryozoans from the Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene and a unique archive documenting the evolution of this phylum of marine invertebrates during this time in- terval in the Boreal Chalk Sea that extended from the British Isles to the Aral Sea in Central Asia. The VOIGT Collection contains over 300,000 specimens and was relocated to the Senckenberg Institute in 2005 according to the bequest of Ehrhard VOIGT . As a result of a DFG-funded project, we present here a three-part type catalogue of the holotypes and neotypes of 256 bryozoan species in the VOIGT Collection, of which this is Part 3. In total over the three parts, 247 species are re-illustrated but the name-bearing type specimens of 20 species are missing and no material could be found for 9 species. Two species, described as ctenostome bryozoans by Ehrhard VOIGT , are questionable, while a further three 'ctenostome' species and one 'ctenostome' genus are considered as ichnotaxa. Considering the geographical and related maritime aspects, an extensive study on marine bryozoa is most needed in this island waters. Aiming to find out the distribution and diversity of the deep-sea bryozoan of Andaman waters, a study was carried out in the seven sites of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Andaman Sea. The samples were dredged using sampling gears, during the scientific cruise of FORV Sagar Sampada along Andaman Islands on November, 2017. The investigation was yielded eighteen Cheilostome bryozoan species. A total of 18 species belonging to 11 genera of 10 families coming under 7 super families and 1 suborder of Cheilostomes were listed out from the study. Out of this result, 15 species are first reports from the Indian EEZ. This study has also occupied the paucity of the study of distribution and diversity of deep sea bryozoan from Andaman Islands, after nine decades. The total number of species recorded is 237, 75 of those are from deep waters and 171 from shallow waters. The most diverse group is the order Cheilostomata with 186 species, followed by the order Ctenostomata, with 26 species, and the order Cyclostomata, with 25 species. The bryozoan species richness known currently represents between 57% and 68% of the total estimated. The 135 localities stud- ied were grouped in five areas from North to South along the Portuguese coast, and divided into shallow water and deep water. The best known localities nowadays in Portugal are Armaçao de Pêra, with 82 species, and the Coast of Arrábida, with 71 species, while the Southwest coast is nearly unstudied. Most of the deep water species are considered endemic to the Lusitanian region, while in shallow waters most of them are widely distruibuted in the Atlantic-Mediterranean region.

Extant representatives of the classes Stenolaemata and Phylactolaemata are evidently all placental. Within the Gymnolaemata, placenta- like systems have been known since the 1910s in a few species, but are herein reported to be wide- spread within this class. Placental forms include both viviparous species, in which embryonic devel- opment occurs within the maternal body cavity, and brooding species, in which development proceeds outside the body cavity. We have also identified an unknown reproductive pattern involv- ing macrolecithal oogenesis and placental nutrition from a new, taxonomically extensive anatomical study of 120 species in 92 genera and 48 families of the gymnolaemate order Cheilostomata. Results support the hypothesis of evolution of oogenesis and placentation among Cheilostomata from oligolecithal to macrolecithal oogenesis, followed by brooding, through incipient matrotrophy com- bining macrolecithal oogenesis and placentation, to oligolecithal oogenesis with subsequent placen- tal brooding.
