Florence I http://etd.uwc.ac.za ABSTRACT The taxonomic history of South African bryozoans is fragmented and outdated, with the majority of published works in the 20th Century. Sampling gaps exist in deep-sea regions and parts of the coastline, while existing collections within museums remain undetermined due to scarcity of specialist taxonomists. This project forms part of a larger project aimed at updating marine invertebrate biodiversity in South Africa. Outcomes of this project include updating bryozoan biodiversity by identifying species from existing collections housed in natural history museums (e.g., Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town and Natural History Museum, London), and analysing current regional bryozoan biogeographical and depth-related species richness patterns. The biogeography and richness of bryozoan species around South Africa was investigated using published distribution records from the literature and museum catalogues as well as examining un-worked bryozoan material from Iziko South African Museum. A total of 368 species of bryozoans were recorded, including twelve new species (Favosipora epiphyta sp. nov., Chaperiopsis (Chaperiopsis) yinca sp. nov., Aspidostoma staghornea sp. nov., Micropora erecta sp. nov., Trypostega infantaensis sp. nov., Khulisa ukhololo sp. nov., Adeonella assegai sp. nov., Celleporaria umuzi sp. nov., Hippomonavella lingulatus sp. nov., Microporella lezinyosi sp. nov., Phidolopora cyclops sp. nov. and Reteporella ilala sp. nov.) and 70 unidentified species. Distribution data for 286 valid species were separated by depth zones (shallow waters, subphotic zone, shelf edge, bathyal zone and abyss) and four biogeographic regions are recognised a priori around South Africa, namely the west, south, southeast and east coasts. This study revealed that there is a clear biogeographic structure to regional bryozoan fauna of South Africa. Species richness and endemism appear lowest on the west coast (104 species) and highest on the south coast (174 species), while local peaks are observed in the Cape Peninsula/False Bay area, East London, Durban and St. Lucia, which coincide with distinct genetic lineages for some marine taxa (e.g. octocorals, chitons, echinoderms, fishes, seaweeds). Although, the faunal break in Durban does not represent a peak in species richness in this study, but rather very low bryozoan richness, highlighting the undersampled areas north of Durban. The northward-flowing Benguela Current and strong upwelling centres may influence the low diversity on the west coast. On the south coast, the high diversity may be attributed to the Agulhas Current that can carry larvae southwards and eastward-flowing counter currents produce great variability in bryozoan communities in this region. Within any biogeographic region, bryozoan diversity was higher in shallower (< 500 m) than deeper waters, which may be attributed to sampling effort and heterogeneity (e.g. variable substrate and wave action) in shallower waters. Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Although investigations of the phylum have taken place over a century, knowledge of species diversity in this sea is still very incomplete. The coastal waters of the Bering Sea belong territorially to Russia and the United States of America and, accordingly, study of the bryofauna has been achieved generally by the efforts of the Russian and American bryozoological schools. For a number of reasons, their investigations were conducted independently and, because the investigators identified specimens collected within their “national” sea areas, species occurring in the eastern and southeastern shelves of the sea were generally studied by American scientists and those in western coastal waters by Russians. Therefore the history of bryozoan investigations of the Bering Sea is most usefully presented according to the two lines of research. 2. This species shows three distinct zooid types during summer: the R (rib), I (intermediate), and S (shield) types. Evidence indicates that zooids commit to development as a given type, rather than transform from one type to another with age. Differences in the frontal spinocyst among the types appear to be mediated by a simple developmental mechanism, acceleration or retardation in the production of lateral costal fusions as the costae elongate during ontogeny. Colonies of all three types were identical, or nearly so, in partial nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene (555–631 bp), suggesting that they represent a single species.

This is what I got: “Lazy Crust Bryozoan?” To add insult to injury when I looked at the site, although it did say “lacy crust bryozoan,” it showed a lovely picture of Membranipora membranacea on kelp, not any species of Conopeum.

Adeonid bryozoans construct antler-like erect colonies and are common in bryozoan assemblages along the Japanese Pacifi c coast. The taxonomy of Japanese adeonid species, however, has not been studied since their original descriptions more than 100 years ago. In the present study, adeonid specimens from historical collections and material recently collected along the Japanese coast are examined. Eight adeonid species in two genera were detected, of which Adeonella jahanai sp. nov., Adeonellopsis parvirostrum sp. nov., and Adeonellopsis toyoshioae sp. nov. are described as new species based on the branch width, size and morphology of frontal or suboral avicularia, shape and size of areolar pores, and size of the spiramen. Adeonellopsis arculifera (Canu & Bassler, 1929) is a new record for Japan.
