Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Adeonid bryozoans construct antler-like erect colonies and are common in bryozoan assemblages along the Japanese Pacifi c coast. The taxonomy of Japanese adeonid species, however, has not been studied since their original descriptions more than 100 years ago. In the present study, adeonid specimens from historical collections and material recently collected along the Japanese coast are examined. Eight adeonid species in two genera were detected, of which Adeonella jahanai sp. nov., Adeonellopsis parvirostrum sp. nov., and Adeonellopsis toyoshioae sp. nov. are described as new species based on the branch width, size and morphology of frontal or suboral avicularia, shape and size of areolar pores, and size of the spiramen. Adeonellopsis arculifera (Canu & Bassler, 1929) is a new record for Japan. -

Additional literature references treating Cuban Lepidoptera are also provided. The list is based primarily on literature records, although some collections were examined: the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática collection, Havana, Cuba; the Museo Felipe Poey collection, University of Havana; the Fernando de Zayas private collection, Havana; and the United States National Museum collection, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. One family, Schreckensteinidae, and 113 species constitute new records to the Cuban fauna. Hageman, Noel P. James, & Yvonne Bone ABSTRACT Bryozoan skeletons are a dominant constituent of cool-water carbonate sediments in the Cenozoic of southern Australia. The primary substrate on much of the modern continental shelf is loose sediment that is reworked intermittently to 200+ m water depth by storm waves. Availability of stable substrate is a limiting factor in the modern distribution of bryozoans in this setting. As a result, a significant proportion of the sedimentologically important modern bryozoans (30–250 m water depth) live attached to sessile, benthic invertebrate hosts that possess organic or spicular skeletons. Hosts such as hydroids, ascidian tunicates, sponges, soft worm tubes, octocorals, and other lightly-calcified and articulated bryozoans provide ephemeral substrates; after death, host skeletons disarticulate and decay, leaving little or no body fossil record. The calcareous sediments produced by these epizoic bryozoans from ephemeral substrates result in loose particles that rarely preserve substratal relationships, but potentially retain diagnostic basal attachment morphologies. Although the best known examples of epizoic carbonate production on ephemeral substrates are from the southern Australian margin, this may be an important phenomenon both globally and in the fossil record. -

Lectotypes for Adeonellopsis japonica (Ortmann, 1890) and Adeonella sparassis (Ortmann, 1890) were selected among Ortmann’s syntypes. Most species of Adeonellopsis around Japan have a southern distribution from Sagami Bay to Okinawa, while A. japonica shows a more northern distribution from Kouchi to Otsuchi. In contrast, Adeonellopsis arculifera was collected only from southwestern Japan. -

ABSTRACTS & PROGRAM 25th – 28th May 2017 University of Vienna Vienna Austria Welcome to the 14th Larwood Symposium in Vienna! ‘Servus’ as we Austrians say. It’s my pleasure to welcome almost 50 colleagues and friends from 15 different countries to Vienna, the capitol of Austria. It is the third time the IBA will come to this city for exchange of new scientific results and new ideas for future research projects. In 1983, Norbert Vávra first invited our community to the 6th international meeting followed 25 years later by the 8th Larwood meeting organized by Norbert Vávra and Andrew Ostrovsky. With this meeting, Vienna will be the venue with most IBA-meetings so far. Kind of surprising considering that the amount of active bryozoologists was never very high when compared to other locations. Vienna is an extraordinary city and an excellent location for conferences and meetings. This is also reflected in the amount of international meetings in this city. Just in 2015 statistics count 3.685 congresses and business events. Organizing a meeting commonly turns out to be more work than expected and I’d like to thank all persons involved in making this meeting possible: Our secretaries Anita Morth and Doris Nemeth, our IT-technician Sonja Matus and my helping hands and students Hannah Schmibaur (who also designed the logo for this meeting), Nati Gawin, Philipp Pröts and Basti Decker.
