3 4 From the Director

Fairy tales are a part of our culture. We all know them by heart. A beautiful princess is rescued by a handsome prince. Sometimes a monster is vanquished, sometimes a witch is thwarted, sometimes a spell is broken. One thing is always true, “they” invariably live happily ever after. In the modern world, we need modern fairytales. The story of asks the question, “What happens when we rewrite the fairy tale?” What if, instead of the dashing prince, we have a cantankerous loner living in a swamp? Instead of the beautiful, obedient princess, we have a smart, strong heroine who can choose her own destiny? What if instead of the white, majestic steed we have a donkey? I want to thank the crew for their tireless efforts on this show. A good crew on a show is one that does their job so the audience never even thinks of them. They do not get to enjoy a bow like a performer, but their work is no less vital to the story than an actor’s. The costumes, make-up, set design, props, lighting, sound, and publicity chairs have put countless hours into this show and for that, they have my undying gratitude. To create theater is a privilege. Theater is a unique cultural event. A shared viewing experience that will cease to exist when the curtain closes, never to be repeated again. Theater cannot exist without patrons like you, who support what we do. “THANK YOU” from the bottom of our hearts! Tonight’s performance is our gift to you. Our cast and crew have worked hard for many weeks to create a world that we know you will love. Nick Marinello

5 64th Anniversary Special

6 Letter from the President

Welcome to Grosse Pointe Theatre’s 71st season! After being a member for 16 years, I’m happy to introduce myself as the new President of GPT. I want to thank all of you for joining us for our season of family-friendly theater. For your appreciation of the arts and support of local theatre, we are truly grateful. As everyone knows, “the only thing constant is change”, and I am excited about the future of our group! Our members are actors, musicians, technicians, set designers, painters, costumers, or simply, our friends, and it would be our pleasure to welcome you into our family! If you have an interest in theatre - from ushering, to sewing a button, and everything in between - join us - we’ll teach you what you need to know! Similar to last season, we continue to travel throughout our Grosse Pointe community, and we owe a debt of gratitude for your patience and flexibility as we perform in different venues. We would also like to thank the Grosse Pointe Public School System and University Liggett School for their continued support. In addition to our main stage productions, we are proud of our Purdon Studio Theatre, an outlet for more avant garde, “black box” productions, as well as our Youth On Stage program - giving young people the opportunity to learn performance skills that will translate to real life application. Community engagement has always been a priority for GPT. Whether it is donating funds or tickets to other charitable organizations, adopting a family during the holidays, participating in community events, or our 40+ year scholarship program for local high schoolers pursuing further arts education, we are proud to be a supportive partner in our community. All of this is not possible without donor support. Your gift will allow GPT’s programs to thrive, allowing theater to remain a vital part of our region. Thank you for your patronage of Grosse Pointe Theatre.

With gratitude, Danielle Caralis President

20 Who’s Who in the Cast

Rob Bertetto (Pig 1/Ensemble) – Rob would like to welcome you to Duloc, it’s a perfect place! He joined GPT in 2017 and is performing in his fourth show. He is performing alongside his wife, MaryLynn, who inspired him to act and sing. Rob has appeared in , Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and How to Succeed in Business. He and MaryLynn are also members of The Judelaires and Motor City Chorale. Rob lives in Grosse Pointe Farms with his wife and daughter, Tori, and works as an IT Manager in downtown Detroit. He is looking forward to “hamming” it up on stage and would like to thank the cast and crew for all the hard work they do to make this a great show.

MaryLynn Bertetto (Pig 2/Ensemble) – MaryLynn is playing the part of the 2nd (not so) Little Pig and is very excited to be a member of this delightful (and young) cast of Shrek! Since her return from living abroad, MaryLynn has rediscovered her love of the stage, especially of musical theater. She is the very lucky woman married to a pig (oops – I mean, the 1st Little Pig – hee hee) and a mom of 3 children, as well as the (evil) step-mother of 3 adults. She has been a part of several Theatre Arts and Fine Arts productions over the last several years and dabbles in the casts of other Metro Detroit-area community groups as the muses strike her. She wants to apologize to the 3 Little Dogs she has left home alone over the last couple of months, to thank her #1 fan, her daughter Tori, for cooking some great meals for her tired parents and, as always, to send kisses to her loving husband, Rob, for keeping her company in all her theatrical, musical and adventurous jaunts around the globe.
