We will confess to sorting through some strong emotions while watching these students at work, a. There’s nothing like a musical theatre number, done with feeling, to make the world outside the theatre fall away. What you’re about to see was brought into being by Theatre at Normandale students: this is a cabaret of songs chosen by these students, out of love, or curiosity, or the blend they make when they sing with someone else. The set was designed by an AFA candidate in Production & Design, and every musical number is lit by students in this semester’s Lighting Design class. The costumes (some of them handcrafted, painted, and constructed), are designed and built by Costume Design students. These 4 actors were a true quartet from the first moment--some of them met each other in person for the first time at our first rehearsal in the space, and they already seemed like old pals. You will see that dynamic at play in tonight’s Showcase. These artists love each other, and they look out for each other in the work. No Theatre faculty could ask for more than that. We are proud of all of these students, and of who they are as artists facing the world. We hope that you will allow their work to transport you for an hour to a space outside your life, and into a darkened theatre surrounded by music and color and joy. We hope, too, that you feel the power of live theatre as you watch--we are counting the days until we can greet you in the Theatre for that experience again. Wishing you a wonderful summer, and we’ll see you next season! Warmly, Amanda and Sean CAST & CREW BIOGRAPHIES BRADLEY BEAHEN (Musical Director), a native to Minnesota, ventured out east to study musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University. • OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We Can’T Imagine a More Perfect Show to Give Our 2016–2017 Season a Great Launch (If You’Ll Pardon the Pun)
OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. It’s a season we’re extremely proud and excited to share with all of you. DOUGLAS GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. We’re also proud to welcome the outstanding creative team that has made October Sky a reality. Director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell is an artist whose work we’ve long admired, whose skill in staging is matched by her deft touch with actors. She’s truly a perfect fit for this heartwarming and triumphant show.

In opera, music is the primary element, supported by the set and costumes. The set and costumes provide a visual interpretation of the music. In film, music and sound play a supporting role. Music and sound create an ambiance in films that aid in telling the story. I consider the musical to be an equal and reciprocal balance of music and vision. More importantly, a successful musical is defined by its plot, music, and visual elements, and how well they are integrated. Observing the transformation of the musical and analyzing many different genres of concert music, I realize that each new concept of transformation always blends traditional and contemporary elements, no matter how advanced the concept is or was at the time. Through my analysis of three musicals, I shed more light on where this ii transformation may be heading and what tradition may be replaced by a new concept, and vice versa.
