Hail and Farewell Lloyd and June Pearson Volume 21 Issue 1 January 1, 2021 Hail and Farewell Lloyd and June Pearson Lloyd and June Pearson with their 1940 Continental Cabriolet. Lloyd and June have been members of LCOC since 1971. The picture is from the fourth quarter 1986 Continental Comments, along with an interesting story about their car as written by Tim Howley, LCOC Comments Editor Emeritus. This past November, the Lincoln and Continental Club, along with the North Star Region, lost two of our long-time members to the effects of Covid-19. Lloyd and June Person, of Edina, passed within days of each other, leaving most of us with a large empty space in our hearts for these fine, gentle people, who over the years contributed so very much to both LCOC and the Re- gion. Lloyd and June were among those charter members who worked hard to establish the Re- gion and get it up to speed. A full, formal obituary is located elsewhere in this newsletter. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

Introduction In 1985, Rose Nylund and Dorothy Zbornak responded to a room-for-rent ad on a bulletin board in a local grocery store in Miami, Florida, posted by their future roommate, Blanche Devereaux. The single women were soon joined by Dorothy’s mother, Sophia Petrillo, after the retirement home where she lived, Shady Pines, burned down. For the next ten years, the four women took care of each other as they aged while (mostly) enjoying each other’s company. The roommates cook together, help each other when one get sick or has an emergency, and they form an informal “family” together. While they don’t always get along, they are always there for each other in a time of need. If this story line sounds familiar, it should. It is the premise for the sitcom The Golden Girls. The show reached critical acclaim and each of the four stars received Emmy Awards for their roles. The country fell in love with these women, but it is unlikely that the show’s producers realized just how close to reality their show would become nearly thirty years later.

Borough Battle: Celebrating Betty White (Queens) Andrea and Jim. Two friends. Two boroughs. Two SeamlessWeb meals. Read what happens when they debate whether Queens or Brooklyn is the proper place to host a tribute meal to the great Betty White in honor of her record-breaking appearance as host of Saturday Night Live. Take it away Andrea: If this was the Bea Arthur or Estelle Getty episode, I’d say, sure Brooklyn’s got this covered. But it’s not, and I’m not taking the seven hour train ride from Queens to Brooklyn to eat a meal that would make Sophia Petrillo proud (may she rest in peace). I’ve chosen Sanford’s as the Astoria restaurant for our Epic Betty White Feast. As a brunch institution, Sanford’s is well known among Astorians. Their French Toast is the French-iest and their Bloody Mary’s are…the bloodiest? I kid. Each and every Sunday that I’ve stumbled over to Sanford’s, I’ve been met with a crowd of hungry New Yorkers waiting for their chance at some amazing food. But none of that has to do with me not having to leave my apartment to enjoy my favorite Facebook meme come to life with my favorite person on this planet, Jim. So, back to the woman of the hour. Appetizer: Maryland Crab Cakes This classed up version of a St. Olaf staple would be sure to make Rose Nylund proud. Why’s that you ask? Of Norwegian heritage, her history with “krabbelag” (literal translation: “crab party”) would mean that she’s had significant experience with this shellfish.

Fall 2008 Annual Report Mercy Medical center Foundation The quiet side of strength Mercy Foundation joins with donors to enhance patient care Mercy Medical Center Foundation Dear Partners in Caring: Since the spring issue of Partners we have experienced life-changing events in Cedar Rapids and here at Mercy Medical Center. Who could have anticipated that flood waters would extend ten blocks beyond the river and force necessary evacuations of all the patients in the hospital and in Hallmar? But it happened. Since those very eventful days in June 2008, we have “risen above it” thanks to the efforts of so many community volunteers, vendors, contractors, employees and friends from all over. Today, we are proud to show off the fruits of our labor. The hospital is beautiful, and we encourage you to stop for a visit. You’ll like what you see. A grand re-dedication and public open house of the Lundy Pavilion was celebrated on September 28, 2008, with a Mass said by Archbishop Jerome Hanus O.S.B We were saddened this past year by the loss of two inspirational leaders at Mercy. J. Edward Lundy and Abbott Lipsky were both charter members of our Founders’ Society and emeritus members of the Foundation Board. Mercy will be forever grateful for their generous gifts of time, talent and treasure. Their legacies live on through two special ways—the naming of Lundy Pavilion and the annual Lipsky Lecture Series held for all employees here at Mercy. While we have challenges ahead, we also have exciting new opportunities. Your gifts are needed to support our areas of greatest need and to continue to assist those devastated by the floods.

SEX AND THE CITY, PLATINUM EDITION: HOW THE GOLDEN GIRLS ALTERED AMERICAN SITUATION COMEDY Jared Clayton Brown A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts May 2013: Committee: Dr. Becca Cragin, Advisor Dr. Jeffrey Brown Dr. Scott Magelssen © 2013 Jared Clayton Brown All Rights Reserved. iii ABSTRACT Dr. Becca Cragin, Advisor When The Golden Girls premiered in 1985, the show helped usher in a new era in American situation comedy television. American audiences had never seen a situation comedy where a group of adult women were the focal point of each episode. There had certainly been programming prior to the show where women held starring roles, but never before had anything like The Golden Girls been shown in American prime time television. The show left an indelible mark and millions of Americans have followed the adventures Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, both in its original run from 1985 to 1992, and in its current syndication status on several cable television networks. Sex and the City, Platinum Edition: How The Golden Girls Altered American Situation Comedy explores several of the ways in which the program effected American culture in terms of television as well as away from the television screen. The first chapter of the project explores how the show laid the groundwork for several other programs followed the show’s lead by installing a group of adult women at its center. Comparisons between The Golden Girls and several of these shows (including Sex and the City, Designing Women, and Hot in Cleveland) are made in terms of character types and plotlines.
