Curb Your Ethics: the Moral Philosophy of Larry David ELIZABETH YUKO [email protected] www.elizabethyuko.com @elizabethics CURB YOUR ETHICS: THE MORAL PHILOSOPHY OF LARRY DAVID Few modern-day thinkers are as concerned with the minutiae of everyday life as much as Larry David. Throughout the nine seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, David walks viewers through his very specific worldview, and the reasons behind it. Like his previous show, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm addresses issues of both etiquette and ethics, but is there really a difference? Join bioethicist Dr. Elizabeth Yuko for a look inside Larry Davidian ethics, then stick around after the show to watch the season 9 finale. It'll be pretty, pretty, pretty interesting. Q.E.D. As studied as a Dorothy Zbornak deadpan, and as goofy as a Rose Nylund St. Olaf Story, it's must-see TV-based scholarship!” – Eric Drysdale, 9-time Emmy-winning writer for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report "Elizabeth Yuko is such a delightful cuckoo, and I'm not just saying that because it's an approximate rhyme. Her lecture on bioethics and The Golden Girls manages to be both hilarious and truly informative, which is a rare feat. The prepared lecture is terrific, as was her Q&A with the audience afterwards. Recommended for fans of the show, bioethics types, and anyone who enjoys a uniquely good time! –Carolyn Castiglia, Host of Right NOW! with Carolyn Castiglia; as seen on Comedy Central, VH1, MTV, HLN, & NickMom “We were treated to a hilarious AND instructional talk called ‘Everything I Know About Bioethics I Learned from The Golden Girls,’ by Dr. Elizabeth Yuko. ‘Twas a packed house where science geeks, sitcom lovers and med-heads laughed and cried until we were ‘thanked for being a friend.’" – Jack Feldstein, Filmmaker/Scriptwriter “Dr. Elizabeth Yuko utilized the perfect blend of right brain/left brain instructional strategies! The audience was actively engaged with a humorous performance with the fascinating juxtaposition of social justice and bioethics principles being imparted! Elizabeth is brilliant, sexy and super funny! The audience was left with an appetite for more! Dr. Yuko is genius! Run to her next workshop!” – Joan Becht Willette, M.S. • Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Ed Asner Walks Into His New Lawyer’S Office to Discuss His Vast Estate When the Lawyer Greets Him, Iwarmly, Wearing Jeans and a Polo Shirt
APPEARANCES DO MATTER By David S. Wolf n a very funny scene from Larry David’s HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Ed Asner walks into his new lawyer’s office to discuss his vast estate when the lawyer greets him, Iwarmly, wearing jeans and a polo shirt. Asner’s character is taken aback by the lawyer’s outfit, asking if he is going to a “Halloween party.” The lawyer attempts to put Asner at ease, advising him that it is “casual Friday.” Asner responds by telling the lawyer that he looks like a “f—cowboy.” The lawyer’s efforts to put the prospective client at ease, assuring him that his estate would not be handled “casually,” fall on deaf ears, and Asner, outraged, leaves in a huff, large retainer in hand. • Hbo Premieres All New Series Girls and Veep
HBO PREMIERES ALL NEW SERIES GIRLS AND VEEP  Miami, July 9, 2012 – HBO Latin America announced that Girls and Veep, two new original comedies, will premiere on July 23. The first episode of both productions will be available on www.hbomax.tv after they air onscreen. Girls is a comedy directed by Lena Dunham, the up-and-coming filmmaker and actor, who also stars in the series. Veep stars Emmy®-award-winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has starred in popular series like Seinfield and Curb your Enthusiasm.  Created and led onscreen by Lena Dunham, Girls takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of women in their early 20s living in New York City. The series, which has already been renewed for a second season, focuses on the girls’ adventures in post-collegiate floundering.  A fresh and intimate look at friendship, relationships and self-discovery, Girls is a contemporary coming-of-age show that packs humor, farce and poignancy into each episode. Through four distinct characters, who may seem unlikely friends to some, Girls shines through as a voice of the post-recession generation who can hardly afford lunch, let alone Manolos. In addition to Lena Dunham as the anxious, rumpled Hannah, the cast of Girls includes Jemima Kirke as the beautiful Jessa, allergic to all things bourgeois; Allison Williams as Marnie, Hannah’s uptight roommate with strict rules about their best-friendship; Zosia Mamet (Mad Men) as Shoshanna, an NYU student and Jessa’s self-help obsessed roommate and cousin; and Adam Driver (HBO’s You Don’t know Jack) As Hannah’s love interest, Adam.

1 Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era Thesis by Lisa E. Williamson Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Glasgow Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies 2008 (Submitted May 2008) © Lisa E. Williamson 2008 2 Abstract Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era This thesis explores the way in which the institutional changes that have occurred within the post-network era of American television have impacted on the situation comedy in terms of form, content, and representation. This thesis argues that as one of television’s most durable genres, the sitcom must be understood as a dynamic form that develops over time in response to changing social, cultural, and institutional circumstances. By providing detailed case studies of the sitcom output of competing broadcast, pay-cable, and niche networks, this research provides an examination of the form that takes into account both the historical context in which it is situated as well as the processes and practices that are unique to television. In addition to drawing on existing academic theory, the primary sources utilised within this thesis include journalistic articles, interviews, and critical reviews, as well as supplementary materials such as DVD commentaries and programme websites. This is presented in conjunction with a comprehensive analysis of the textual features of a number of individual programmes. By providing an examination of the various production and scheduling strategies that have been implemented within the post-network era, this research considers how differentiation has become key within the multichannel marketplace.
