According to the Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 study, the nonprofit arts and culture sector is an $18.9 million industry in Berks County supporting 625 full time equivalent jobs which generates $1.9 million in state and local tax revenue. Programming provided by Berks Arts Council generates over $8 million in revenue for our local hotels, restaurants and stores. Berks Arts Council spends 92% of its funding on educational programs, outreach, arts presentation and collaborative works. With a staff of three, we are thankful for the 286 volunteers that dedicate over 11,000 hours annually to Berks Arts Council. With your gifts of time, talent and treasure Berks Arts Council has served over 100,000 individuals this past year. Today we invite you to take a few moments to read our first Annual Report. The report discusses our mission to inspire, engage and unite our community through arts education, collaboration and presentation. The report reflects activity from July 1, 2018- June 30, 2019. In next year’s report, we look forward to sharing with you our new community collaborations such as the Celebration of Women in the Arts, grants awarded in the tri-county area and expansion of our public art initiatives. Shortly we will be celebrating our 30th annual Berks Jazz Fest, supporting the Bandshell Concerts and finishing the year with another exciting lineup for the Reading Blues Fest. Sincerely, Kent W. Davis Meggan Kerber Chair, Board of Directors Executive Director BANDSHELL CONCERTS 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT OUR PROGRAMS Berks Arts Council has been promoting Berks BERKS BARDS County artists since 1969 when a group of local volunteer artists and arts patrons decided to form an umbrella organization. The organization was incorporated in 1971. GET JAZZED The mission of Berks Arts Council is to inspire, engage and unite our community through arts education, collaboration and presentation. Serving as a catalyst, Berks Arts Council utilizes the arts to address social and economic barriers through inclusive and integrative programs. The arts play a critical role in engaging diverse communities, changing perceptions, creating safe environments and strengthening economic opportunities. In addition to the programs you discover in this report, Berks Arts Council consistently reaches out to the community via various means. A weekly eblast highlighting local arts events in the area is sent to all BAC friends and arts advocates. On a bi-monthly basis, an arts roundtable discussion is held with over 30 arts organizations and partners throughout Berks, Lancaster and Schuykill counties to discuss current initiatives, trends, collab- orative projects, and community development. The roundtable is open to all artists and organizations of any genre to attend. Finally, Berks Arts Council hosts a monthly show on Berks Commu- nity Television (BCTV) to share what is happening in the arts and in our community. The impact of this program has resulted in countless new arts programs as well as supplementing many longstanding arts programs. The allocation of funds is determined by a process developed by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Funding is underwritten by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Berks Arts Council receives administrative funds in order to oversee this process. 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT BARRIO ALEGRIA “Opening spaces that explore the richness of immigrant cultures was at the core of the “El Baile del Barrio” program. With the support of the Berks Arts Council, Barrio Alegria was able to hire choreographers and provide studio space for three dances that were performed at three different community events. One of these dances, a Traditional Mexican dance has grown into its own program and is now engaging 15 children who have continued to offer free dance instruction with a volunteer choreographer at Barrio.” — Daniel Egusquiza - Barrio Alegria MAIDENCREEK OLD TIMERS FESTIVAL “As one of the founders of the Maidencreek Old-time Music Festival, I speak for all of us to express our gratitude for the support of Berks Arts and Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts which has made our Festival an important day on the calendar for musicians from Eastern Pennsylva- nia, and beyond. Because “old-time” music is such a small world anyway, the Festival has provided a way to build that community of people who love it and wish to play or improve their playing of this unique American genre. We at Maidencreek have been able to provide our attendees with the opportunity to work with and learn from old-time musicians of national and even international reputation, and to have fun just playing music together.” — Betty Druckenmiller, for Tom Druckenmiller, Norm Williams, Paula Taylor and Mike Andrews, founders 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT WRITING THROUGH TRAUMA: A PROCESS “The funding ... supported my continuous efforts to provide a nurturing, safe space for individuals to heal through written expression.” —Marian Frances Wolbers, writer and writing group facilitator 2018-19 PPA PROJECT STREAM GRANT RECIPIENTS Applicants may apply for up to $2,550 to support arts and cultural activities in the Project Stream grant cycle.
