Ralfs Kokins Rīga, 2010 Annotation The main issue addressed in the present dissertation is whether Judaism (its Pseudepigraphic Medieval literary successors are implied) had borrowed certain concepts of Zoroastrian afterlife and how this can be exposed through the medium of available texts. There has been quite an extended discussion among scholars of various fields on this issue in general; yet there is a certain lack of a more detailed approach. The following dissertation deals with the certain features of the description of hell („tours of hell” of visionary genre) within the context of otherworldly journeys of a God elected hero particularly concerned with the details of punishment of the sinners using principle of retaliation (talion) as means of reward. The task of the author is to carry out an analytical comparison between these common elements or its modified forms (hanging punishments, location of hell in northern regions, angels of punishment and various tormenting creatures, etc.) inherent at textual sources. The main thesis of my doctoral research makes an attempt to research Jewish Medieval tours of hell as closely resembling concepts behind Ard ā Wir āz N āmag („The Book of the Righteous Wir āz”, 9 th -10 th century, Zoroastrian community treatise on otherworldly journey to have a glimpse of heavenly bliss and punishments in hell) and other Pahlavi texts (up till the 9 th century C.E.) of Sasanid period in Iran (226 C.E.-651 C.E.). Zoroastrian descriptions of hell tours bear some particular elements which are exclusively vivid, especially in comparison to identical Jewish hell tours (Medieval visionary midrash) comprising the same or similar elements. The concept of “hanging punishments” according to which the sinners are hung up by the part of the body they had sinned with is reviewed. The original idea of a principle of the correspondence of a punished limb to a crime committed is probably mostly borrowed from Zoroastrians; this statement could be approved by their book Arda Wir āz Nāmag . Additional concepts of afterlife are found in corpuses of other Zoroastrian texts such as Bundahišn ( “Creation”), Dadestan-i Denig (“Religious Judgments”), Dēnkard (“Acts of Faith”, “Acts of Religion”) and Vendid ād (“Law against the Demons”). 2 Several Medieval Jewish midrashic texts are examined, including the tractate Orot Hayyim (“Lights of Life”), Gedulat Moshe (“The Revelation of Moses”), Otzar Midrashim (“Treasury of Midrashim”), tractate Masekhet Gehinnom (“Tractate of Hell”), Masekhet Hibbut Ha-Kever (“Tractate of the Pangs of the Grave”), Gan Eden we Gehinnom ( “Garden of Eden and Hell”) and the “Ascension of Moses” (Judeo-Persian version of Hebrew midrash included). While exploring further sources of similar motives of transmission, the texts of Christian visionary literature as the Apocalypse of Paul (Visio Sancti Pauli ) and the Apocalypse of Peter (Nag-Hammadi Gnostic texts), Medieval Old Slavonic apocryphon “Weeping of Our Lady” as well as Medieval Muslim hadiths (legends including Miraj or The Night Journey of Muhammad), Dante’s “Divine Commedy” ( Divina Commedia ) and other relevant material have been inspected. Medieval Jewish visionary midrash which was popular among masses (however not supported by rabbis) can be considered as a descendant of earlier Jewish Pseudepigraphal and Apocryphal traditions.     On the Good Faith Zoroastrianism is ascribed to the teachings of the legendary prophet Zarathustra and originated in ancient times. It was developed within the area populated by the Iranian peoples, and following the Arab conquest, it formed into a diaspora. In modern Russia it has evolved since the end of the Soviet era. It has become an attractive object of cultural produc- tion due to its association with Oriental philosophies and religions and its rearticulation since the modern era in Europe. The lasting appeal of Zoroastrianism evidenced by centuries of book pub- lishing in Russia was enlivened in the 1990s. A new, religious, and even occult dimension was introduced with the appearance of neo-Zoroastrian groups with their own publications and online websites (dedicated to Zoroastrianism). This study focuses on the intersectional relationships and topical analysis of different Zoroastrian themes in modern Russia. He is also mentioned in the Targum pseudo-Jonathan, Yeshayahu 11:14 and in the Targum Yerushalmi A (Devarim 34:3 ). Armilus 1 is first mentioned in Saadiah Gaon's (b.892, d.942) Emunot ve-De'ot (Ma'amar 8), apparently under the influence of Sefer Zerubbavel . The ancient tradition of Armilus thus originated not earlier than the beginning of this period at the latest. Its basis, however, is the Talmudic legend of Moshiach the Son of Yosef, who would be slain in the war between the nations prior to the redemption that would come through Moshiach the Son of David ( Suk. 52a ). LXVII, Z. 1, 2014, (s. 151–168) MATEUSZ MIKOŁAJ KŁAGISZ Oral Character of Middle Persian Literature – New Perspective Abstract From the very beginning oral transmission of texts played a significant role in the Iranian world. It became a main topic of several works by Bailey (1943), Boyce (1957, 1968), de Menasce (1973), Skjærvø (1384hš), Smurzyński (2006) and Tafazzoli (1378hš). In my paper I try to depict the problem of orality in Middle Persian literature once again, but this time using some tools developed by Ong. On the other hand, it is highly likely that at least the “obscurity” is addressed to works of the 9th century that also contain material which at one time was transmitted orally, but which themselves were products of a written culture. Their style is difficult because the authors wrote in long, complicated sentences. Most of these sentences are in no way adopted to be transmitted by heart. Key words Middle Persian, literature, orality, influence In this article I would like to deal with the problem of orality and its influence on the formal structure of written Middle Persian texts. I use the adjective ‘written’ deliberately because most of Middle Persian texts, that we have at our disposal now, existed originally as unwritten and only later were written down. Paradoxically, it means that we are able to gain some information about orality literature only from some printed sources. The question of orality (and literacy) was elaborated by different Orientalists, but in my paper I am using Walter Jackson Ong’s method of analysis of texts existing first of all as acoustic waves.1 From this point of view, my paper is situated within the framework of today’s research on pre-Islamic literature in Iran but offers a new perspective.
