The tragedies included the slaughter of child soldiers, the use of chemical weapons, the striking of civilian shipping in the Gulf, and the destruction of cities. Pierre Razoux shows why this war remains central to understanding Middle Eastern geopolitics, from the deep-rooted distrust between Sunni and Shia Muslims, to Iran’s obsession with nuclear power, to the continuing struggles in Iraq. Why did Saddam embark on this expensive, ultimately fruitless conflict? Why did the war last eight years when it could have ended in months? Who, if anyone, was the true winner when so much was lost? After reading this book, I thought Id write a review about the actual book, rather than its price, as the other two reviewers (as of the time of this review) have done.Although I read a favorable review of this book somewhere, I was hesitant to read such a long book about the Iran-Iraq War-- what little I remembered about the war did not sound promising: stalemate, trenches, gas warfare, child soldiers, rocket attacks on cities, difficult to root for either side...I am very glad that I decided to read the book anyway--it is one of the best military histories Ive read in a long time. While the war was indeed a sordid, botched affair marked by all of the factors listed above, and plenty of incompetence by both sides, the book is well- written with a wealth of detail...the author has done a fine job of making this terrible war interesting.The author seems to have done an astonishing amount of research, including listening to the tapes that Saddam Hussein made of all of his important meetings (apparently for posterity...). The author succeeds in turning what could have been a very dull history into a fascinating read full of interesting details, from specific aircraft loadouts and battle tactics to illegal arms trading rings and terrorist tactics. As just one (very sad) example, the author describes how Iran sent its child soldiers into battle with plastic golden keys (ordered by Iran from a toy company) , telling them that the key would allow them into heaven if they died in battle; Iran also sent its child soldiers--armed only with their plastic keys and copies of the Koran--into minefields to clear the way for regular troops. Very grim stuff...The maps are pretty good, but as usual, difficult to read on a Kindle.In addition to the military aspects of the war, the author does a very good job describing the wars political/diplomatic/economic context, including terrorist bombings, kidnappings, arms traders, how the war helped cause the fall of the Soviet Union, etc. Both superpowers (the US and USSR), France, the UK, and all of the regional powers (Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia, etc.) had difficulty adopting coherent positions towards the belligerents because of conflicting internal priorities stemming from cold war issues, oil price, arms trading profits, religion, terrorism, personal animosities, bureaucratic infighting, etc. The author, who is French, points out several instances where one branch of the French government deliberately undermined other branches in dealings with Iran/Iraq.What didnt I like? My only quibble regards the translation: overall the translation is very good and the text flows very smoothly, but there are some odd turns of phrase--for instance, the term layouts is used very often in a military context, although presumably a better English translation would have been something like positions or formations (difficult to tell from the usage). But this is a very minor issue in what is otherwise an outstanding work of history.Finally, while this is probably obvious, I should point out that this is not the book for someone looking to read about brilliant feats of arms...while a few impressive military achievements are described in the book (as well as some examples of reckless courage), examples of gross military incompetence (by both sides) are encountered much more often.Overall, this is a very good book on the topic, and I highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in Middle Eastern or contemporary warfare. I experience phys - ical freedom and the chance at artistic expression and discovery in each moment I hold a camera. No wonder I’ve been doing it for 25 years and love my life. But/and, the dilemmas I face while holding my camera are formidable. There are the concrete challenges I must face in the moment—how to frame, find focus, choose the direction to follow. The other troubles are implicit and often unseen by the audiences of films I shoot: • The people I film are in immediate and often desperate material need, but I offer little to nothing material. • I can and will leave places I film (a war, a refugee camp) when the people I film can’t. • I traffic in hope without the ability to know what will happen in the future. • I ask for trust, cooperation and permission without knowing where the filming experience will lead the subject. • I alter the balance of power through my presence and act on behalf of one side or another in a conflict. • My work requires trust, demands intimacy and entails total attention. Poor liquidity was behind the appeal of two esoteric trades presented by panelists - buying the beat up Icelandic Krona and the largely unknown Iraqi equity market. Any easing of illiquidity in these markets could prompt significant appreciation. Whether meaningful size can be achieved in these trades, especially the Iceland one, was a popular topic of discussion at the after party. The potential withdrawal of liquidity played a prominent role in 2 other trades. One had to do with the end of QE2, and the volatility that might emerge as a result. The panelist suggested buying corporate CDS ahead of this. The other was a bearish trade at the front end of the US yield curve, based on the idea of a possible bringing forward of FED tightening. Combine all this by getting exposure to the illiquid option-like trades and simultaneously play for higher US rates/credit risk/volatility. A possible win-win if there is only a modest tightening of US policy. But, probably the biggest story of the day was the drama unfolding outside of the room.

    75 CONTESTING “IRAQ”: A SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIVIST EXPLANATION Lawrence Craig Bailie1 School for Security and Africa Studies, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University Abstract Iraq, following the 2003 US invasion, was more than just a site of physical conflict; it was also an event on the ground that encompassed a contest around classification. The reason for this contest – one that goes beyond the political considerations during that time – is the migration of the term “civil war”. Using social constructivism as a theoretical lens of inquiry, sense is made of this migration. The empirical evidence that accompanies this theoretical work is drawn from the debate over the conflict in Iraq. This debate is used as a means by which to bring the contestation over the notion of “civil war” to the fore and reveal the migration of the term. Introduction Civil wars are believed to have experienced a steady increase in their “number, duration and sheer destructiveness” since the beginning of the 19th century.2 Of the 124 cases of “civil war” that have been identified between the years 1816 and 1988, almost half occurred between 1945 and 1998.3 Duyvesteyn writes, “civil war has been the dominant form of war at least since the end of the Second World War”.4 Another count indicates that more than a hundred civil wars have taken place since the end of the Cold War in 1989.5 Furthermore, there is an abundance of writing touching on or devoted entirely to the idea that “civil war” is changing. The significance of this idea has led to a distinction being made between “new” and “old” “civil wars”.
