Video online and added to MTV Hits The New Yorker shows Nothin But Love to the Robert Cray Band “Robert Cray has been one of the most reliable pleasures of soul and blues for almost three decades now, an assessment that sounds like faint praise but shouldn’t. Cray is still mostly remembered for his 1986 release, “,” which remains one of the best albums of his career, because it would have been one of the best albums of anyone’s career. Cray released five studio LPs in the ensuing decade and has maintained an enviable recording and touring schedule, and, while that professionalism steadily increases his body of work, it also means that individual albums tend to pass by somewhat anonymously. It would be a mistake if that same fate befell his sixteenth album, Nothin But Love. The leadoff track, “Won’t Be Coming Home,” has a familiar story—woman leaves man, man can’t get past it—stretched over a menacing keyboard line and a surging chorus. As always, it’s bolstered by Cray’s writing, which has the compression of short fiction: “Two days later I get a letter / A picture of a room in some hotel / Sitting framed up on the table / A picture I know so well.” One of the things that made “Strong Persuader” not just a pleasure but a classic was the unreliability of its narrators: the tortured cuckold of “Smoking Gun,” the self-doubting ladies’ man of “Right Next Door (Because of Me).” That’s the case here as well. Why does the narrator of “Worry” feel that passive anxiety is the only option available to him as a loved one descends into a life of ill repute? Musically, Cray remains on firm footing. There are, as always, nods to his forebears— in the slashing, squealing solos, Otis Redding in the forceful vocals—but he’s been do- ing this long enough, and well enough, that he’s mostly just himself. On recent albums, Cray has sometimes fallen victim to the Curse of the Ambitious Composition. “Truce,” the closing track from his 2009 album, This Time, was a jazzy, understated, and borderline soporific five- and-a-half-minute portrait of a fraught relationship. What it lacked is what “Nothin but Love” has in abundance, and that’s forward motion. “Fix This” glides along on a reggae lilt and tasteful piano, until it reaches its chorus, all soul organ and full-throated vocals. “Side Dish” uses food metaphors to sketch out the facts of infidelity (it’s elevated above novelty by superb playing and by the plaintive closing line, “Please take me back”). And even though “I’m Done Cryin’” is nearly nine minutes long and a message song at that—it chronicles the emotional effects of job loss—it’s taut and straightforward, a letter from the economic front.” - The New Yorker “Pop Notes,” September 3 2012 issue catches up with Somebody’s Darling Somebody’s Darling formed in 2007 in Dallas as a hungry band of musicians feeding themselves on a roots rock hybrid soaked in R&B, blues and country. Lead singer Amber Farris, guitarist David Ponder, drummer Nate Wedan, keyboardist Michael Talley and bass- ist Wade Cofer have all worked within a do-it-yourself ethic. That’s particularly true this year when Somebody’s Darling launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the recording of their second disc, Jank City Shakedown, out Sept. 4, booked a 19-city tour, and hired a Triple A radio promoter. I talk with Ponder, 28, about all of that and more.

DMN: There is a soulful keyboard, guitar, bass and drums outro on “Maybe” that speaks volumes about the band’s sound, particularly on the new disc Jank City Shakedown. Add to that Amber’s heart-on-the-sleeve voice and you have the makings of roots rock-R&B- country nirvana. Does the entire group feel passionate about this potent sonic mixture? SD: Yes we do. I’m glad that you caught that. We feel like we are growing into ourselves as writers and performers. It’s absolutely what we wanted to convey. DMN: You recorded Jank City Shakedown in 10 days, after having raised money to make it via Kickstarter. How urgent, how important was it for the band to get this music done and ready for fans to hear? SD: It was absolutely urgent and crucial that we put something new out this year. It has been three years since our last LP came out. We appreciate our friends and fans hanging in there with us so long and we really wanted to give them something new to enjoy. DMN: Was there ever a time when you thought fundraising, recording, booking a 19-city tour and securing a Triple A radio promoter might be too much for one band to handle? SD: Not really. This is how we have always planned on having the release of this album. It was definitely challenging to get all our ducks in a row but I’m really proud of the band for having the persistence to do this right. DMN: Is there any place other than Texas for a band that mixes down home with uptown, grit and grace, rock and soul? SD: I really, really hope so. Texas has been great to us. But it always has been a goal for us to get outside of the region and spread the Jank City gospel across the country. DMN: Somebody’s Darling is closing the tour in Dallas, Oct. 6 at Dada. You’re coming back home, of course, but was it also a case of saving the best for last? SD: Yeah. After three-and-a-half weeks on the road, it’s a lot of time for working out new material and coming home I’m banking on us being better than we have ever been. It helps us to have two of the best bands from Dallas on the bill with us – Goodnight Ned and Bravo Max. -Dallas Morning News, “Local Music Connection,” August 27 2012 Coming Up... 9/10: Chris Robinson Brotherhood “Little Lizzie Mae,” Wives “Blood Red Youth,” Joe Bonamassa “Who’s Been Talking”... 9/24: Ben Sollee “Unfinished”... 10/1: Good Old War “Better Weather” RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 8/29/12
