Video online and added to MTV Hits The New Yorker shows Nothin But Love to the Robert Cray Band “Robert Cray has been one of the most reliable pleasures of soul and blues for almost three decades now, an assessment that sounds like faint praise but shouldn’t. Cray is still mostly remembered for his 1986 release, “Strong Persuader,” which remains one of the best albums of his career, because it would have been one of the best albums of anyone’s career. Cray released five studio LPs in the ensuing decade and has maintained an enviable recording and touring schedule, and, while that professionalism steadily increases his body of work, it also means that individual albums tend to pass by somewhat anonymously. It would be a mistake if that same fate befell his sixteenth album, Nothin But Love. The leadoff track, “Won’t Be Coming Home,” has a familiar story—woman leaves man, man can’t get past it—stretched over a menacing keyboard line and a surging chorus. As always, it’s bolstered by Cray’s writing, which has the compression of short fiction: “Two days later I get a letter / A picture of a room in some hotel / Sitting framed up on the table / A picture I know so well.” One of the things that made “Strong Persuader” not just a pleasure but a classic was the unreliability of its narrators: the tortured cuckold of “Smoking Gun,” the self-doubting ladies’ man of “Right Next Door (Because of Me).” That’s the case here as well. Why does the narrator of “Worry” feel that passive anxiety is the only option available to him as a loved one descends into a life of ill repute? Musically, Cray remains on firm footing. There are, as always, nods to his forebears—Albert Collins in the slashing, squealing solos, Otis Redding in the forceful vocals—but he’s been do- ing this long enough, and well enough, that he’s mostly just himself. On recent albums, Cray has sometimes fallen victim to the Curse of the Ambitious Composition. “Truce,” the closing track from his 2009 album, This Time, was a jazzy, understated, and borderline soporific five- and-a-half-minute portrait of a fraught relationship. What it lacked is what “Nothin but Love” has in abundance, and that’s forward motion. “Fix This” glides along on a reggae lilt and tasteful piano, until it reaches its chorus, all soul organ and full-throated vocals. “Side Dish” uses food metaphors to sketch out the facts of infidelity (it’s elevated above novelty by superb playing and by the plaintive closing line, “Please take me back”). And even though “I’m Done Cryin’” is nearly nine minutes long and a message song at that—it chronicles the emotional effects of job loss—it’s taut and straightforward, a letter from the economic front.” - The New Yorker “Pop Notes,” September 3 2012 issue The Dallas Morning News catches up with Somebody’s Darling Somebody’s Darling formed in 2007 in Dallas as a hungry band of musicians feeding themselves on a roots rock hybrid soaked in R&B, blues and country. Lead singer Amber Farris, guitarist David Ponder, drummer Nate Wedan, keyboardist Michael Talley and bass- ist Wade Cofer have all worked within a do-it-yourself ethic. That’s particularly true this year when Somebody’s Darling launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the recording of their second disc, Jank City Shakedown, out Sept. 4, booked a 19-city tour, and hired a Triple A radio promoter. I talk with Ponder, 28, about all of that and more. DMN: There is a soulful keyboard, guitar, bass and drums outro on “Maybe” that speaks volumes about the band’s sound, particularly on the new disc Jank City Shakedown. Add to that Amber’s heart-on-the-sleeve voice and you have the makings of roots rock-R&B- country nirvana. Does the entire group feel passionate about this potent sonic mixture? SD: Yes we do. I’m glad that you caught that. We feel like we are growing into ourselves as writers and performers. It’s absolutely what we wanted to convey. DMN: You recorded Jank City Shakedown in 10 days, after having raised money to make it via Kickstarter. How urgent, how important was it for the band to get this music done and ready for fans to hear? SD: It was absolutely urgent and crucial that we put something new out this year. It has been three years since our last LP came out. We appreciate our friends and fans hanging in there with us so long and we really wanted to give them something new to enjoy.

  • Thats My Fun Day Aug 25 2019 Isaiah 58
THAT’S MY FUN DAY UNION HILL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF DENVILLE AUGUST 25, 2019 ISAIAH 58: 9B-14 Several months ago, I was waiting for an elevator somewHere and music was playing in the background. THe song was “Eternal Flame,” one of the biggest Hits from the 1980s all girl pop group THe Bangles. Waiting for that elevator was a lady wHo, ever so faintly, was singing along. Surprise!: Your pastor never learned not to talk to strangers. WHen the doors opened and we got on the elevator, I observed, “You were singing along. WHy did you stop?” PerHaps embarrassed at Having been Heard, sHe quickly replied, “OH, no, I wasn’t singing.” “UH, yes you were. Eternal Flame by the Bangles. 80s classic.” “No, really, I wasn’t,” sHe insisted. Nice voice. Maybe not Susanna Hoffs, but good enougH for the elevator. Like Peter in the courtyard, sHe was determined to deny singing at least until the cock crowed. THere is no sHame in enjoying THe Bangles’ music. I mean, it’s not like I caugHt Her as sHe decided to “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Still, the sound of the song reminded me of Having Had a group poster on my wall at college, and appreciating another band that used Rickenbacker guitars, singing they were “going down to Liverpool to do nothing.” THeir other most popular song of the time was “Manic Monday,” the lament of being too busy, running late, and Having one thing after another someHow go wrong. Maybe I liked it because it seemed to give voice to my conviction that life was one long socially awkward moment someHow spread out over time by God! For all the angst of the work-week stress, the cHorus Heralded the longed-for utopian alternative: Just another Manic Monday; wish it were Sunday: That’s my fun day.

  • Sarah Jaffe Started Work on the Body Wins the Day She Bought a Bass and a Drum Set at a Pawnshop
Sarah Jaffe started work on The Body Wins the day she bought a bass and a drum set at a pawnshop. That day, she wrote the rhythmic “A Sucker For Your Marketing,” and her second full-length began to take shape. It had been building up inside her; she just didn’t have an outlet. Jaffe had been writing songs on her acoustic guitar since she was a teenager. She knew everything she could do on it, and everything she couldn’t do. It wasn’t a creative tool for her anymore. When Jaffe first started playing guitar, everything was a discovery. Every chord she played, she thought she had made it up. Not knowing how to play bass or drums, but forcing herself to try, brought that back to her. And so there was “A Sucker For Your Marketing,” a song she may not have been able to write before, but needed to. Maybe not that song, exactly, but Jaffe had pent-up creative energy inside her, after spending most of the year traveling and touring behind her debut (Suburban Nature), seeing and feeling things, soaking up the world. Plus, there was a side to Jaffe that didn’t exist on Suburban Nature, the part of her that liked to dance and listen to hip-hop and cover Robyn songs live. That’s not to say The Body Wins is a party record. It isn’t. But it has a pulse to it, more than a heartbeat, not quite a breakbeat. “Glorified High,” the first single, perfectly captures that, the energy she’d built up and the energy that had always been there, with a chorus that smacks you in the chest and lingers like a hug.

  • For 28-Year-Old Singer-Songwriter Sarah Jaffe, Don't Disconnect Is
For 28-year-old singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe, Don’t Disconnect is both a mission statement and a call to arms -- an album about getting to know yourself in a hyper- connected world that makes it nearly impossible to do just that. The leadoff track from the Texas-born musician’s third LP sets the tone: “Middle of the line/ Middle of the road,” Jaffe sings over mid-tempo beats on “Ride It Out,” “Nowhere to hide on this logical plateau/ Gunna have to ride it out.” “Riding it out” -- that is, facing your reality and learning how to cope with it, is a powerful opening credo for an album titled Don’t Disconnect, which emphasizes the power of staying truly “connected” without unplugging from the world around you. In the six years since her debut EP Even Born Again was self-released in 2008, Jaffe’s endearingly stark narratives have gone from homespun folk-pop songs in the lineage of Lucinda Williams to decidedly cathartic blues-pop ballads that rest at the intersection of indie, folk, and electronic -- without losing any of the thoughtfulness or intimacy. “In a testament to old and new,” she once sang on her EP’s title track, and that is a designation that stands even as her music continues to evolve. Part of Jaffe’s charm comes from that fact that she writes all of her lyrics herself: after wowing crowds at Austin City Limits in the late 2000’s, she earned local recognition through the Dallas Observer Music Awards and signed a deal with Kirtland Records in 2010.

  • Matthew Sweet Tomorrow’S Daughter
MATTHEW SWEET TOMORROW’S DAUGHTER "When I was young, the artists that I really admired were the ones who always found a way to keep making music and expressing themselves," Matthew Sweet says on the occasion of the release of his 13th solo album Tomorrow's Daughter. "To me, those guys were the real artists, and I've tried to hold on to that attitude in my own work." The seasoned singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist is currently in the midst of a personal musical renaissance that's seen him produce some of the most compelling and ambitious music of his three-decade career. That description applies to Tomorrow's Daughter, on which such instantly memorable new tunes as "Belong," "Run Away," "Lady Frankenstein" and "Out of My Misery" demonstrate his uncanny ability to tap into a bottomless well of pop history to craft music that's effortlessly catchy yet deeply personal. Tomorrow's Daughter—the follow-up to the artist's acclaimed 2017 set Tomorrow Forever—is a persuasive testament to the enduring qualities of Sweet's adventurous, emotion-charged songcraft. The new album's 12 songs abound with the punchy melodic sensibility, playful sonic experimentalism and introspective lyrical insight that have been constants in his expansive catalogue. Tomorrow's Daughter is the product of a burst of creative inspiration that followed Sweet's 2013 return to his native Nebraska, where he reestablished his Black Squirrel Submarine home studio. This period yielded 38 brilliant new songs, 17 of which appeared on Tomorrow Forever. It instantly became clear that this potent body of work merited a follow-up release, hence Tomorrow's Daughter.
