  • Sarah Jaffe Started Work on the Body Wins the Day She Bought a Bass and a Drum Set at a Pawnshop
Sarah Jaffe started work on The Body Wins the day she bought a bass and a drum set at a pawnshop. That day, she wrote the rhythmic “A Sucker For Your Marketing,” and her second full-length began to take shape. It had been building up inside her; she just didn’t have an outlet. Jaffe had been writing songs on her acoustic guitar since she was a teenager. She knew everything she could do on it, and everything she couldn’t do. It wasn’t a creative tool for her anymore. When Jaffe first started playing guitar, everything was a discovery. Every chord she played, she thought she had made it up. Not knowing how to play bass or drums, but forcing herself to try, brought that back to her. And so there was “A Sucker For Your Marketing,” a song she may not have been able to write before, but needed to. Maybe not that song, exactly, but Jaffe had pent-up creative energy inside her, after spending most of the year traveling and touring behind her debut (Suburban Nature), seeing and feeling things, soaking up the world. Plus, there was a side to Jaffe that didn’t exist on Suburban Nature, the part of her that liked to dance and listen to hip-hop and cover Robyn songs live. That’s not to say The Body Wins is a party record. It isn’t. But it has a pulse to it, more than a heartbeat, not quite a breakbeat. “Glorified High,” the first single, perfectly captures that, the energy she’d built up and the energy that had always been there, with a chorus that smacks you in the chest and lingers like a hug.

  • For 28-Year-Old Singer-Songwriter Sarah Jaffe, Don't Disconnect Is
For 28-year-old singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe, Don’t Disconnect is both a mission statement and a call to arms -- an album about getting to know yourself in a hyper- connected world that makes it nearly impossible to do just that. The leadoff track from the Texas-born musician’s third LP sets the tone: “Middle of the line/ Middle of the road,” Jaffe sings over mid-tempo beats on “Ride It Out,” “Nowhere to hide on this logical plateau/ Gunna have to ride it out.” “Riding it out” -- that is, facing your reality and learning how to cope with it, is a powerful opening credo for an album titled Don’t Disconnect, which emphasizes the power of staying truly “connected” without unplugging from the world around you. In the six years since her debut EP Even Born Again was self-released in 2008, Jaffe’s endearingly stark narratives have gone from homespun folk-pop songs in the lineage of Lucinda Williams to decidedly cathartic blues-pop ballads that rest at the intersection of indie, folk, and electronic -- without losing any of the thoughtfulness or intimacy. “In a testament to old and new,” she once sang on her EP’s title track, and that is a designation that stands even as her music continues to evolve. Part of Jaffe’s charm comes from that fact that she writes all of her lyrics herself: after wowing crowds at Austin City Limits in the late 2000’s, she earned local recognition through the Dallas Observer Music Awards and signed a deal with Kirtland Records in 2010.

  • Jaffe One Sheet November 2013
Sarah Jaffe has come a long way since her debut EP Even Born Again was self-released in 2008. The Texas native has since released two critically acclaimed albums Suburban Nature (Kirtland 2010) and The Body Wins (Kirtland 2012), she’s toured with Midlake, Chelsea Wolfe, Norah Jones, Blitzen Trapper, Why?, David Gray, Old 97s, CentromatiC, Lou Barlow and New Multitudes. She’s had her voice featured in the Disney/Pixar short The Blue Umbrella that was scored by Jon Brion and she made her late night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In addition, through her close relationship with Erykah Badu’s band, The Cannabinoids, Jaffe started writing with S1 under the moniker The Dividends (http://wearethedividends.com). The duo’s first collaboration “Bad Guy” is also the first track on Eminem’s new record MMLP2 which features both a co-write and chorus vocal from Jaffe. To say she’s experienced tremendous growth both personally and professionally would be an understatement. It is hard to predict what is on the horizon for Jaffe in 2014, but guaranteed you’re going to want to know about it. • AN EXAMINATION of a MUSIC SCENE AS ECONOMIC CLUSTER Michael Seman, University of North Texas
Artivate: A Journal of Entrepreneurship in the Arts Volume 4, Issue 2 http://artivate.org pp. 33-49 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WHAT IF HEWLETT AND PACKARD HAD STARTED A BAND INSTEAD? AN EXAMINATION OF A MUSIC SCENE AS ECONOMIC CLUSTER Michael Seman, University of North Texas Abstract A growing area of discourse in urban economics is the value of artistic production and its role in economic development theory. One arts subsector that has received little attention is popular music. Prior research tangentially acknowledges that music scenes function as economic clusters, but little detailing of their dynamics as such exists. The bulk of attention is paid to how these scenes operate in the framework of the broader music industry, not how they contribute to their surrounding urban economic landscapes. This paper uses Michael Porter’s economic cluster theory to examine Denton, Texas’ music scene. Findings point to the scene operating as an economic cluster as defined by Porter in addition to catalyzing economic and community development. Results address the existing gap in research leaving the economic value of music scenes underexplored and help detail the necessary conditions for a music scene to develop. Keywords Urban, Economic, Cluster, Music, Scene, Entrepreneurship Introduction A growing area of discourse in urban economics is the value of artistic production and its role in current economic development theory (Currid, 2009). One arts subsector that has received little attention in this discourse is popular music.
