The month of May is a time to dust off your wide-brimmed hat and mix up a refreshing mint julep – in celebration of the 141st Kentucky Derby, of course. The race, referred to as “the most exciting two minutes in sports” by its more enthusiastic fans, is so much more than an event to find the top thoroughbred in the world. The pageantry includes women in elaborate hats, enthusiastic betting both for and against the top 3-year-old thoroughbred horses out there, and lively parties both in Kentucky and in living rooms everywhere on Saturday, May 2.

Here are some lesser known facts about the Kentucky Derby:

• About 120,000 mint juleps are mixed and sipped at Churchill Downs each year. To make the classic mint julep, you’ll need simple syrup, sprigs of fresh mint, crushed ice, bourbon to taste, and “My Old Kentucky Home” playing in the background. • There have been 19 winning horses whose names began with the letter “S” throughout Kentucky Derby history. Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Derby, is arguably the most famous of the bunch. • The land for Churchill Downs was leased to Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of explorer William Clark, in 1874. • In 1970, Diane Crump became the first woman to ride in the Derby. Author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson mentioned her in his famous essay “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved.” • In 1986 and at age 54, Willie Shoemaker became the oldest jockey to win the race. The youngest, Alonzo “Lonnie” Clayton, won at age 15 in 1892.
