Kentucky Derby Party Esa Kentucky Derby Your party can be whatever you want it to be, just keeping in mind The Kentucky Derby is often labeled as an “extravagant springtime sports party”. In fact the Derby is well known as “The greatest two minutes in Sports”. As far as parties go the Derby has it all…betting, drinking eating and the most fun of all hats, hats, and more hats! Have your party your way, do any or all of the above, use your imagination and have a GREAT time….partying with a purpose is always a fantastic thing! Two great sites to visit are www.kentuckyderby.com and KentuckyDerbyParty.com. All the information you could possibly need to hostess a Derby party is there. Grab a group of your friends and let’s plan one now… Invitations: You of course, your chapter and anyone you wish to share ESA with…anyone who cares about others and the world around them. Remember, you don’t know who will say yes unless you ask...so take a chance you might be surprised. Take a notebook around with you for a few days as you go about your business. Make a list of potential members. ESA is an awesome organization so share! After you make your list, send out those invitations… you just might be surprised at who will be interested. Note: At our fall leadership everyone was given instructions on making their own business cards. No titles were included so the cards will never be outdated. Each chapter was instructed on how to make their own chapter brochure to have on hand for potential members. Party Attire: Remember Derby attire can range from extremely casual to pearls and hats on millionaires row. Big hats and colors for men are definitely “in”. So, pick out your favorite outfit and the most import part of your ensemble… your hat. Food: Anything goes, make up your own. Everyone has their favorites. Included are only a few of many possibilities. Mint Julep’s (of course) Appitizers: Kentucky Sushi and Toasted Pecan Halves Main Course: Kentucky Hot Browns Desert: Kentucky Derby Pie Each Guest will receive an Official Kentucky Derby Glass to take home to remember their afternnon of fun and excitement. Activities: Hat Contest: Grab a few door prizes and sponsor a variety of hat contests. We are going to play “The Stroll” and have everyone model their hats…May the best hat win! o Biggest o Best Derby Inspired o Best Men’s Hat o Most Outlandish Call To Post: Racing Begins…Place your bets please! It’s all for a great cause. o Listing of all races can be found ahead of time o Make a list of numbers from 1 to 20. Place numbers in a hat and draw your winning horse. For a $2.00 contribution (Or whatever amount you decide). You can “bet on a horse to win.” The horse you draw is the horse you bet on to win. More people than horses? Write the numbers again. o Winner receives a prize or half of the amount collected. The remainer of the amout is given to a charity of your choice. o Each race is “run” the same way.. May the best horse win! Look up a few facts about the Kentucky Derby and share. For instance you could have a mini trivia game between races about all the info you found out. Playing horseshoes is another alternative. See www.Kentuckyderbystore.com for prizes or make your own. Telling the ESA story/Ask them to join: Share about ESA and some of the projects that your local chapter supports. Also share the importance of the friendships made in ESA and the fun that is experienced. Have chapter brochures on hand. Follow up: Follow up with a written note or phone call to answer additional questions Recipes: The Early Times Mint Julep Receipe The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. Almost 120,000 Early Times Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby at Chrurchill Downs. 2 cups sugar 2 cups water sprigs of fresh mint crushed ice Early Times Kentucky Whisky Silver Mint Julep Cups Make a simple syrup by boiling suar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six to eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refridgerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice. Your ratio for your mint julep is one tbsp mint syrup to two ounces of whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Kentucky Sushi Boiled ham Philadelphia Cream cheese chive/onion flavor pickle spears Blot with paper towels your ham and pickle spears. Spread cream cheese on boiled ham. Place pickle spear at one end of ham and roll up like a jelly roll. Slice “sushi” and hold roll with toothpick. Toasted Pecan Halves 4 cups pecan halves 1/4 cup butter 3 teaspoon salt 1. Preheat oven to 325F. 2. Spread pecans on large pan. Bake 10 minutes. 3. Remove, add butter and stir till coated. 4. Sprinkle salt on evenly and stir. 5. Lower temperature to 250F and bake 20-30 minutes more. Stir twice more while baking. 6. Test for doneness at 15 minutes - remember nuts continue to cook when taken from oven so don't over cook them. Original Kentucky Hot Brown Ingredients 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups milk 6 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 egg, beaten 2 tablespoons heavy cream salt and pepper to taste 2 pounds sliced roasted turkey 1 tomato, thinly sliced 8 slices white bread, toasted 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 8 slices crispy bacon Directions 1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour with a whisk or fork, and continue to cook and stir until it begins to brown slightly. Gradually whisk in the milk so that no lumps form, then bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Mix in 6 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese and then stir in the beaten egg to thicken. Do not allow the sauce to boil once the egg has been mixed in. Remove from the heat and stir in the cream. 2. Preheat the oven's broiler. For each hot brown, place two slices of toast into the bottom of an individual sized casserole dish. Cover with a liberal amount of roasted turkey and tomato slices. Spoon sauce over the top of each one and sprinkle with some of the remaining Parmesan cheese. 3. Place the dishes under the broiler and cook until the top is speckled brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from the broiler and arrange two slices of bacon in a cross shape on top of each sandwich. Serve immediately. Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie NOTE: This recipe makes a large amount of batter, so be sure to use a 10-inch deep dish pie pan. A stoneware pie pan with high sides works well. When shaping and fluting the pie crust, make sure to bring the sides up high enough to hold all the Kentucky Derby Pecan Pie filling. Recipe for 10-inch Single Crust Pie Crust visit, http://donna- diegel.suite101.com/best-pie-crust-recipe-a36015 (This recipe makes enough for 2-4 crusts. You can divide the recipe in half or freeze the extra crusts.) 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted 1/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed 3/4 cup Karo light corn syrup 4 large eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/4 cup bourbon 3/4 cup gourmet chocolate chips 1 1/4 cup toasted pecans or walnuts, shelled and chopped in half if desired Directions 1. Oxmoor: The Bullitt House in Jefferson County, Kentucky Samuel W. Thomas For 200 years, the 1,000-acre Oxmoor tract, now bounded by the Watterson Expressway and divided by Interstate Highway 64 near Louisville, has been owned by the Bullitt family. At the core of :t this commercial and farm property is the homestead-a rambling residence surrounded by outbuildings. It is rare that a property and its buildings remain for two centuries, let alone in one family. It is even more remarkable that much of Oxmoor's history is recorded and extant in family papers. Alexander Scott Bullitt (1761/2-1816) was the first Bullitt to set foot on the hillsides along Beargrass Creek, near the pioneer fortification known as A'Sturgus Station.1 His son, William Christian Bullitt (1793-1877), inherited the property, and his grandson, Thomas Walker Bullitt (1838-1910), wrote out his recollections of "Life on a Farm in Kentucky Before the War" in 1906.

  • Kentucky Derby 2018
KENTUCKY DERBY 2018 MAY 4TH MAY 5TH MAY 7TH–9TH Kentucky Oaks Kentucky Derby Endeavor Louisville ISP The first Kentucky Derby was held in 1875 in front of a crowd of a mere 10,000. Today, it draws over 150,000 people to the city of Louisville for one of the biggest, greatest, and most historic sporting events in America. Due to the size of the event, if you are hoping to attend the Derby pre-ISP, you’ll need to start planning sooner rather than later. We’ve put together this guide to help you out. WHAT IS KENTUCKY OAKS? The day before the Kentucky Derby is Kentucky Oaks, the top race in the US for three-year-old female horses. The Kentucky Oaks race is just as historic as the Derby, having also been established in 1875. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink at the Oaks in support of breast cancer and other women’s health issues. WHAT IS THE KENTUCKY DERBY? The Kentucky Derby is one of the longest running sporting events in America. This one and one-quarter mile long race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses is often called the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” The day features 14 races, with the Kentucky Derby being the 12th race. Throughout the day, spectators wager on different horses while sipping mint juleps and sporting their biggest hats and best preppy, pastel Derby attire. It’s truly a bucket list kind of event that you don’t want to miss! MORE DETAILS WHEN TO ARRIVE People typically arrive the Thursday or Friday before the Derby.

  • The Kentucky Derby Museum Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky
The Kentucky Derby Museum Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky Role: Architect for New Museum Building Area: 45,000 sf Description: In 1982, our firm was selected through a national competition to design a new building for the Kentucky Derby Museum. Located at world- renowned Churchill Downs, the new building has been sited to create an entry courtyard that will impart a sense of arrival that is appropriate to this famous institution. This entry court is flanked on the east by the museum building, on the west by the historic Club House and on the south by the entry portico to Churchill Downs. In order to unify the architectural expression of these two buildings, the front façade of the new Museum is designed as a mirror image of the front of the Club House, with the entry doors of both buildings on an axis with each other. The Museum’s twin spires and slopping roof echo the architecture of the race track structure, which further unifies the Churchill Downs complex. Inside the 45,000 sf three-level building, there are approximately 18,000 sf of public areas, including 12,500 sf of long term and temporary exhibition galleries on two levels, a gift shop, dining facilities, and an auditorium. Outdoor areas south of the museum building will be used for live demonstrations of tracking and saddling, outdoor dining, and additional exhibits. The primary goal of the exhibition program is to tell visitors about horse racing in general and the Kentucky Derby in particular so that they will find their experience at Churchill Downs more interesting and enjoyable.
