Its methodology is based on the current practice and the approaches to landscape assessment, protection and management. The method also draws on well- established principles of the Historic Landscape Character Assessment (HLC) methodology first developed and used in Cornwall (UK) – but the characterisation approach have been tested and further developed at different scales but within the same broad objectives of improving understanding, protection and the management of the historic environment substantially for the Turkish context. The research includes the following 5 main parts. It begins with a description of the need and context for the assessment, from the perspective of local authorities who require the assessment to inform and underpin landscape strategies at the local level, and more generally as a critique of existing SMI systems. The following Chapter 2 focuses on national approaches to identify/describe and assess cultural landscapes through seperate case studies in UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) v and US to form a baseline for the development of a method to assess cultural landscapes in Turkey in the following Chapter. Chapter 3, describes and evaluates the background, methodology and application of Cultural Landscape Character Assessment (Cul.LCA) undertaken between 2011 and 2015 in Cappadocia (Turkey). Finally, in Chapters 4 & 5, the research concludes with reflections on the use of Cul.LCA in planning, conservation and management policy on landscape (i.e. informing work on distinct character areas; including identification of areas for designation, mapping of boundaries, justifications for special application of policies, justification for special treatment by designation, and input to management plans and other management initiatives, etc.). Keywords: Landscape, Landscape Characterisation, time-depth, Cappadocia (Turkey). vi ÖZ KÜLTÜREL PEYZAJ ALANLARININ ÖZELLİKLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ İÇİN BİR YÖNTEM ÖNERİSİ: KAPADOKYA ÖRNEĞİ ÜZERİNDEN BAĞLAM, YÖNTEM VE SONUÇLARI ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA Tuna Yüncü, Zeynep Doktora, Restorasyon, Mimarlık Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Prof.Dr. Anahtar Kelimeler: Peyzaj, Peyzaj Alanlarının Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi veya Tanımlanması, tarihsel-derinlik, Kapadokya (Türkiye). viii To Onur & Ayşe ix ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis is submitted as a part of requirements for the PhD degree in Restoration, Department of Architecture at the Middle East Technical University. I first embarked on this subject in 2010, and since then a much more active debate has evolved in recognition of ‘cultural landscapes’ as a separate category of sites and the methods to identify/describe, assess and protect these landscapes; and even in the final draft of this research was being continuously updated as new information became available. I am fortunate to reflect these discussions with colleages and fellow professionals, many of whom have provided invaluable support. My thesis supervisor, Prof.Dr. Neriman Şahin Güçhan has guided my work from the beginning and I am grateful for her continuing and dedicated support, and valuable comments on the manuscript; and also to Assoc.Prof.Dr. A.Güliz Bilgin Altınöz, Prof.Dr. İclal Dinçer, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Anlı Ataöv, Prof.Dr. Ömür Bakırer, and Prof.Dr. Vedat Toprak for their assistance throughout the various stages of the research. Prof.Dr. Vedat Toprak form the Department of Geological Engineering, Middle East Technical University, also made their draft simplified geological classes and associated data available for the use of the research. Discussions towards clarifying the various aspects of Cappadocia’s complex geological formation that influenced the landscape also assisted greatly. Input on the GIS database was provided by Dr. Çağıl Kolat, Department of Geological Engineering, METU. Colleagues who contributed to the discussion or who have kindly provided information and data for the purposes of this reseach, in particular E.Gökhan Bozkurtlar, director of the Department of WHS within the General Directorate of Cultural Resources and Museums, MoCT, and İpek Özbek, Kıvılcım Neşe Akdoğan, Dr. Şule Kılıç Yıldız, Adem Demirci, Seda Duzcu, Uğur Işık, Evrim Ulusan, Yıldırım İnan, Gülhan Demir, and Umut Özdemir, Department of WHS, officers x within the Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Council(s), Mevlüt Coşkun, former Director of the Nevşehir Regional Conservation Council, Mehmet Yıldız, Director of the Kayseri Conservation Council, Gülnaz Savran, Director of the Kayseri Archaeology Museum, and Mehmet Ekinci, Yeşilhisar Municipality, to all of whom I extend

REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. This book’s argument Mark Altaweel is framed within a larger theoretical framework termed as ‘universalism’, a theory that explains WORLD A many of the social transformations that happened to societies in the Near East, starting from Andrea Squitieri the Neo-Assyrian period and continuing for centuries. Among other infl uences, the effects of these transformations are today manifested in modern languages, concepts of government, universal religions and monetized and globalized economies.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-02794-7 - Cities and the Shaping of Memory in the Ancient Near East Omur¨ ¨ Harmansah¸ Frontmatter More information Cities and the Shaping of Memory in the Ancient Near East This book investigates the founding and building of cities in the ancient Near East. The creation of new cities was imagined as an ideological project or a divine inter- vention in the political narratives and mythologies of Near Eastern cultures, often masking the complex processes behind the social production of urban space. During the Early Iron Age (ca. 1200–850 bce), Assyrian and Syro-Hittite rulers developed a highly performative official discourse that revolved around constructing cities, cultivating landscapes, building watercourses, erecting monuments, and initiating public festivals. This volume combs through archaeological, epigraphic, visual, architectural, and environmental evidence to tell the story of a region from the per- spective of its spatial practices, landscape history, and architectural technologies. It argues that the cultural processes of the making of urban spaces shape collective memory and identity as well as sites of political performance and state spectacle. Om¨ ur¨ Harmans¸ah is Assistant Professor of Archaeology, Egyptology, and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University. He currently directs the Yalburt Yay- lası Archaeological Landscape Project, a Brown University–based regional survey in west-central Turkey since 2010. • The Decipherment of the Hittite Hieroglyphic Texts
The Decipherment of the Hittite Hieroglyphic Texts BY THE REV. PROFESSOR A. H. SAYCE THERE are the same recognized rules for the decipherment of an unknown script as there are for that of an ordinary cipher, and if they can be followed the script cari be deciphered with as much ease as the cipher. Sometimes they cannot be followed, sufficient materials being absent; in this case, all we can do is to wait patiently until the materials are forthcoming. At one time this was the case with the so-called Hittite hieroglyphic texts. But it has long ceased to be so. The materials for a scientific decipherment of them have been gradually accumulating, and verification has gone hand in hand with the determination of the value and meaning of the characters. We are no longer dependent upon a few fragmentary inscriptions, too often in so imperfect a condition as to make the forms of the characters upon them more or less uncertain. It is now nineteen years ago since I laid my first results before the Society of Biblical Archroology (Proceedings, 1903). From that time forward I have contributed to the Proceedings of the Society a · series of papers on the same subject, correcting, improving, and adding to my first results, as fresh texts were discovered and misreadings amended. But it was, I know, difficult for other scholars to follow what was little more than a record of the private work of the laboratory in which the main facts were necessarily obscured by a mass of details. And the restrictions upon the use of the Hittite type increased the difficulty.

Erik Wilhelmus Maria van Dongen UCL Department of History PhD Thesis - 1 - I, Erik Wilhelmus Maria van Dongen, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. - 2 - Thesis abstract It is commonly accepted nowadays that ancient Aegean culture included many elements that were not indigenous. But scholars still question the importance of these for the development of the region. I contend that such scepticism is mistaken. Ideas about the ancient Aegean’s cultural independence are founded in the history of research in this field, and could be countered by more detailed studies of specific cultural elements. The following issues should be addressed: the likelihood of an indigenous development of elements; reasons for transmission and the process of embedment; the process of transmission. These issues I discuss in the introduction. Next, a case study follows on the connection between the appearances of the ‘Kingship in Heaven’-theme in the Hittite Song of Going Forth (‘Song of Kumarbi’) and the Hesiodic Theogony. I explain these by proposing a specific scenario. An analysis of the song shows that it focused on the storm-god more than is commonly assumed. Subsequently, the variant of the theme in the Theogony and its similarities with that of the song are described. Various elements of the theme that appear similarly in the Theogony and the song probably originated outside the Aegean.
