chen gui denis twitchett Chen gui and Other Works Attributed to Empress Wu Zetian ome quarter-century ago, studies by Antonino Forte and Richard S Guisso greatly advanced our understanding of the ways in which the empress Wu Zetian ࣳঞ֚ made deliberate and sophisticated use of Buddhist materials both before and after declaring herself ruler of a new Zhou ࡌʳdynasty in 690, in particular the text of Dayun jing Օႆᆖ in establishing her claim to be a legitimate sovereign.1 However, little attention has ever been given to the numerous political writings that had earlier been compiled in her name. These show that for some years before the demise of her husband emperor Gaozong in 683, she had been at considerable pains to establish her credentials as a potential ruler in more conventional terms, and had commissioned the writing of a large series of political writings designed to provide the ideologi- cal basis for both a new style of “Confucian” imperial rule and a new type of minister. All save two of these works were long ago lost in China, where none of her writings seems to have survived the Song, and most may not have survived the Tang. elite in late-tang china nicolas tackett Great Clansmen, Bureaucrats, and Local Magnates: The Structure and Circulation of the Elite in Late-Tang China he predominant paradigm describing Chinese elite society of the T first millennium ad was defined thirty years ago in carefully re- searched studies by Patricia Ebrey and David Johnson, both of whom partly built upon the foundation of earlier scholarship by Takeda Ryˆji 竹田龍兒, Moriya Mitsuo 守屋美都雄, Niida Noboru 仁井田陞, Sun Guodong 孫國棟, Mao Hanguang 毛漢光, and others.1 According to this model, a circumscribed number of aristocratic “great clans” were able to maintain their social eminence for nearly a thousand years while simultaneously coming to dominate the upper echelons of the government bureaucracy. The astonishing longevity of these families was matched in remarkability only by their sudden and complete disap- pearance after the fall of the Tang at the turn of the tenth century. In their place, a new civil-bureaucratic scholar-elite came to the fore, an elite described in enormous detail first by Robert Hartwell and Robert I would like to thank the anonymous reviewers for their very helpful comments, as well as all of the participants in the 2007 AAS panel where I first presented this paper, notably the discussants Robert Hymes and Beverly Bossler. • Overview of the Technology of Low Altitude Warning Based on Acoustic Detection Shaocheng Zhu1, a and Limin Liu1
Advances in Computer Science Research, volume 71 4th International Conference on Machinery, Materials and Information Technology Applications (ICMMITA 2016) Overview of the Technology of Low Altitude Warning Based on Acoustic Detection Shaocheng Zhu1, a and Limin Liu1 1Department of Electronic and Optics Engineering, Ordnance Engineering College, Shijiazhuang 050003, China. [email protected] Keywords: Low altitude warning, Target Recognition, Acoustic localization Abstract. It is very important for the existing warning system to detect low altitude target with acoustic detection due to the blindness of the traditional radar detection. Electronic devices are used in acoustic detection to receive the threat target’s sound wave in order to obtain the target’s attributes such as coordinates, tracks and categories. Comparing with the traditional warning technology, the warning technology based on acoustic detection has the features of not being to get found easily, to be affected by visibility when being armed. It is especially suitable to defense against the low altitude threat target. Being one of the most popular warning technology, the warning technologies based on acoustic detection has its unique advantages in the field of localization, recognition and other areas, and has attracted more and more attention of the military departments of all countries. In this paper, the warning technology based on acoustic detection is introduced briefly, including basic theory, development history, application in military and shortages. In addition, the localization algorithm with five- element cross array and the theory on acoustic target recognition are discussed in detail, and its utilization prospects are pointed out finally. 1. Introduction With the development of radar technology, the detection range and accuracy of radar doubled during the early 21st century.

  • Painting and Collecting Nature in Modern China, from Zhao Zhiqian
Pictures for Action: Painting and Collecting Nature in Modern China, from Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884) to Jin Cheng (1878-1926) by Anran Tu A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture Department of Art and Design University of Alberta © Anran Tu, 2018 Abstract The thesis project concentrates on the Ouzhong wuchan juan (Scroll of Local Products from Wenzhou, 1861) by late Qing artist Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884) and its copy (1922) by the Republican-era artist Jin Cheng (1878-1926). The two paintings, which are not only aesthetic objects but also pictorial collections of natural objects, pose a range of questions regarding the role of visuality in producing “scientific” knowledge in modern China: How does a painting of natural objects claim to be a representation of authentic knowledge? How do texts and images create a visual experience equivalent to looking at the actual natural objects? What did it mean to depict and collect natural objects in modern China? Answering these questions by examining materials associated with the two artists’ artistic and intellectual practices, the thesis seeks to illuminate the discourse on seeing and knowing in Chinese tradition underlying in both Wuchan scroll and its copy, with which the artists engaged in representing and organizing “scientific” knowledge of both nature and culture from late nineteenth century to early twentieth century China. The first chapter, “Collecting Nature in the Age of Evidential Study: Zhao Zhiqian’s Scroll of Natural Products from Ouzhong and the Scroll of Strange Fishes (1861)” seeks to examine Zhao’s two “natural history” scrolls within the context of the epigraphic movement and evidential scholarship during the late Qing period.

War and the Creation of the Northern Song State Abstract This dissertation explores the way that war formed the Northern Song (960-1127) state. Earlier research on the Northern Song failed to explain how and why the Northern Song empire established a peaceful border with the Liao empire to its north. This dissertation, by means of a detailed military history of the period from 954-1005, concludes that the Liao state did not intend to destroy the Song state. It was the Liao's limited military and political goals rather than the strength or weakness of the Song that created a peaceful border between the two empires.
