ANTHONY GRANT Principal

Renowned for his expertise and knowledge of the global art market, Anthony's career in the art world spans nearly 40 years. Prior to founding his own private art dealership and consultancy, Anthony spent ten years overseeing the global expansion and development of the Contemporary Art Department at Sotheby's as Vice Chairman.

As a trusted advisor to many important collectors of Contemporary Art, Anthony was instrumental in securing some of Sotheby’s most significant consignments including record prices at auction for Jasper Johns, , and Mark Rothko to name a few. Anthony was also entrusted with handling deaccessions for prominent museum collections including Dia Art Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, the , the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Clyfford Still Museum. His unrivaled leadership and expertise in the industry has provided his clients with a trusted relationship and premier experience for decades.

Anthony has provided guidance and appraisal expertise to numerous private collectors in North America and internationally for fair market, insurance, estate tax and gift tax purposes. His experience includes appraisals for the estates of Joan Mitchell, Keith Haring, Xavier Fourcade and Robert Motherwell, as well as indemnification appraisals for important museum exhibitions including Ad Reinhardt (MoMA, New York and LACMA, Los Angeles) and (LACMA, Los Angeles).

Anthony received his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and started his career as an intern at Sotheby's auction house in 1979. While at Sotheby’s, Anthony held senior positions in the Print, Latin American and Contemporary Art Departments. He was promoted to head the Contemporary Art Department in 1993. During his tenure Anthony orchestrated important sales including the collection of Robert & Ethel Scull and the Estate of .

In 1995 he joined Pace/Wildenstein Gallery as a director, overseeing the sales and exhibitions of pre-eminent artists including Agnes Martin, John Chamberlain, , Sol LeWitt and .

In 1998 he and Marc Selwyn established Grant Selwyn Fine Art, a bi-coastal gallery with offices in New York and Los Angeles showcasing a spectrum of artists including Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, , and Ellsworth Kelly.

Later, under his own name, Anthony continued to excel in the sale of Post-War Abstract Art, Minimalism and Conceptual Art and Pop Art before returning to Sotheby’s in 2005.

Anthony is a member of the Curator's Council of Dia Art Foundation in New York and the National Leadership Board of the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas.

THOMAS MCDOWELL Director

Thomas McDowell is the director of Anthony Grant Inc. He is responsible for building and maintaining client relationships, facilitating sales, and all aspects of business development.

Prior to joining AG Inc., Thomas worked in the Contemporary Art Department at Sotheby's in New York, where he spent three years managing relationships with major clients and contributed to a number of significant auction and private sales. In addition, Thomas worked closely with the Contemporary Art Department’s senior specialist team on a diverse range of appraisal and collection management projects.

Before his tenure at Sotheby's, Thomas worked with several leading fine art and design galleries in London. He holds a bachelor's degree in Creative Arts and Communications with a concentration in Art History from Richmond, The American International University in London and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art from Sotheby's Institute of Art, London.
