The World Today THE WORLD TODAY Wisconsin Guard clashes with students UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN (UPI) National Guardsmen tossing tear gas grenades and carrying fixed bayonets clashed with student strikers yesterday in the fifth day of disorders on the University of Wisconsin campus. Wisconsin National Guardsmen, part of a contingent of 900 ordered out by Gov. Warren P. Knowles to quell disruption of school activities, moved into action to disperse strikers when they blocked traffic on busy U.S. 12 which cuts through the heart of the univerity campus. Student strikers, an estimated 400 strong, were bested and sea tered in a series of scuffles with bayonet packing guardsmen and police wielding night sticks. Striking students see the guardsmen as another, more ominous symbol of “racist oppression.” But students attending classes yesterday generally expressed gratitude for the presence of the troops. “I think it’s disgusting,” a striking girl student said. “I feel as if I’m in an occupied country.” Her bearded friend said, “This is just like being in Nazi Germany.” THE But a freshman in fashion design, whose parents are threatening to take her from the campus for her own protection, said she was very glad the guardsmen were here. “1 want to be protected,” she said. The comments were terse, with strikers calling guardsmen “Fascist pigs” and racists.” Two long-haired students approached a OBSERVERServing the Notre Dame and St. Mary's College Community guardsmen, pointed to his bayonet and asked him, “Are you going to use that thing today?” VOL.III.NO 81 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14. 1969 “I sure hope not,” the guardsman said. • I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)
“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)”— Otis Redding (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell Otis Redding Original label Like a surprising number of America’s most revered and best-known rock ‘n’ roll classics, Otis Redding’s remarkable “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)” originally wasn’t much of a hit. Alarmingly, it didn’t make it above #21 on the pop charts when it was first released in 1965. But, since then, the burning power of Redding’s heartfelt soul has made this record a true standard. As Dave Marsh in his book “The Heart of Rock & Soul” puts it, “[it’s] the ultimate slow dance, a nonpareil seduction song,...a song that will be covered as long as men and women want an excuse to clutch each other tight in public.” It took about two weeks for Redding and co-writer Jerry Butler to take the song from a fragment that Butler first played for Redding in a Buffalo motel room to the final version. It was recorded on April 19, 1965 and put out on the Volt label (a subsidiary of Stax). While the song did have some success on the pop chart, it was far more popular in the R&B rankings; it made it all the way to number two. Otis Redding was born in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. The son of a gospel-singer preacher and his housekeeper wife, Redding showed an early inclination towards music. Quitting school in his sophomore year, Redding eventually went to work as a member of Little Richard’s house band.

  • Great Voices; an In-Depth Look at Six Iconic Rock and R&B Singers”
Spring 2018, OLLI Cal: Tuesdays, 10-12 “Great Voices; an in-depth look at six iconic rock and r&b singers” Throughout the rich, long arc of popular music there has always existed the great singer, the individual who elevates the great song to another dimension, a place where, as listeners, we are thrilled and inspired for the rest of our lives when we hear their work. This course will cover the lives and careers of six legendary rock and r&b singers from the period 1955-75, five Americans and one Irish singer whose work has embodied American roots music. Although all of them are also known as songwriters and performers, they made their mark as vocalists, who could rock our socks off one minute, while with the next breath cajole the sweetest melodies from the material they so passionately tackled. Taught chronologically, the six classes will be presented as a cultural and musical journey through the amazing lives and work of these artists when they were at the forefront of popular music. The course will do this through several media: lectures, slide shows, photographs, recorded music, film clips and the use of live music. The instructor will play piano, guitar and sing, and will choose appropriate examples from each genre to perform in class. In this class we will cover: The “Genius,” Ray Charles The “King of Soul,” Sam Cooke The “Voice,” Roy Orbison The “The White Queen of Soul." Dusty Springfield The “Big O,” Otis Redding The “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin * * * Suggested reading, listening, viewing Week One; Ray Charles Brother Ray:
